Multisensory Integration: Testing Children With Autism

www.einstein.yu... - John Foxe, Ph.D. shows how his lab measures multisensory integration in high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). He found that younger children with ASD have trouble integrating the auditory and visual cues while listening to speech, but that the problem clears up in adolescence. Dr. Foxe is director of research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center and professor of pediatrics and of neuroscience.

Hmm. I learned in college during a physch of learning class that there is a known period of brain "re-wiring" that occurs at this age, certain connections diaintegrate and are rebuilt during early puberty (age - 11, 12, 13, 7th grade-ish, or the, "Wow, you teach THAT grade?! Bless you!" grade as it's sometimes addressed to teachers [intentional humor from a "blessed" teacher]). I wonder if this could afford kiddos with these struggles another opportunity to overcome some of the "struggly" bits of autism (autism isn't all bad - for three most part I love my kiddos with autism).
