💬Synopsis
During Tang Dynasty's 2nd reign, Wu Ruyi (Fan Bingbing) enters the palace at age 14 as an innocent Cairen (Talented Lady) and aspires to serve Emperor Taizong (Zhang Fengyi) as his consort. The Emperor Taizong soon takes notice of her and falls in love with her due to her resemblance to Empress Wende.
He also gives Wu Ruyi the name Meiniang. This incites many to grow jealous of her and Wu Ruyi suffers the machinations of Noble Consort Wei, Pure Consort Yang, Virtuous Consort Yin, Xiao Qiang, and Feng Cairen. Even her best friend Xu Hui (Janine Chang) betrays her to win the Emperor's affections. They set out to destroy her numerous times by falsely accusing her of theft, murder and treachery. She survives by her wits and intelligence but is kept at arm's length by Emperor Taizong due to a prophecy foretelling a woman of Wu stealing the Tang Dynasty.
When Emperor Taizong dies, she is sent to a monastery to become a nun. However, the Emperor's youngest son Li Zhi (Aarif Rahman), who later becomes the Emperor Gaozong, has been in love with her since he was a child. He brings her back to the palace and makes her his concubine. During her time as a minor consort to Emperor Taizong, she learned how an effective Emperor rules his court.
She overcomes the schemes of Consort Xiao (Viann Zhang) and Empress Wang (Shi Shi), and suppresses the rebellion of Princess Gaoyang (Mi Lu). Using that knowledge, she helped Li Zhi take back power from his Regent, and herself into the position of Empress meanwhile avenging her daughter's death. She co-ruled with Li Zhi until his death, after which she ruled the country in her own right and established the Zhou Dynasty.

I remember the first time I watched this drama was during a period in which I thought most Chinese TV series were soap operas, but to my surprise, I was so amazed at the beauty of Fan Binging and her costumes as well as the splendor of the royal life in Tang Dynasty. I started reading the story of Wu Zetien and the history of Tang Dynasty. From then on, I not only watched other good-quality ancient Chinese costume dramas but did research on Chinese history. In my opinion, Chinese history is more interesting than some of the western histories I read. I watched this drama several times and still watch it when I get bored.

the historical dramas are beautifully done. the translation subtitles can leave a bit to be desired though. then you get into their fantasy stories and they are just beautiful.

..."other good-quality ancient Chinese costume drams". Yes! Same with me. In my view "good quality" is the amount of effort ($) put into production which means quality actors, setting, writing. Next is the historical setting; the closer to historic timelines and actual characters, the better, without being a documentary. Artistic license is space to work between the lines of true history.... drama. ... I was moaning about the lack of new dramas of quality recently, but have found that the cost and redundancy (already covered) are obstacles today. Thats why there are so many Wuxia fantasy dramas which I don't like. Then I realize there are older dramas that I haven't seen, like this one and Lengend of Mi Yue and others that were huge back in their times. There are more. I've already watched the versions around the 3 Kingdoms. *It would be great to find a timeline that matches the dramas that relate to historical timeline to use as a reference.

I remember this show when I was like a kid! 😃 But I’ve forgotten how many episodes I actually finished and the intro seems different from what I remember. But still, ever since then I couldn’t stop remembering Fan BingBing and the title of the show. I wasn’t expecting KZbin to even suggest it today when I was scrolling. One of the best series drama I've watched of a nonfictional character! although I don't think the story is based entirely on actual events its very well acted and intriguing to watch. So much so I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next! My favorite moments were between Li Zhi and Wu Ruyi. I never expected this young emperors love for Wu Ruyi was so great and persistent. I have watched some episodes over and over to understand some questions while watching thet came to mind. I didn't realize initially that Wu Ruyi was actually pregnant with Li Zhi's child and not the elder emperor. Only when I rewatched it did I discover that and others confusions were cleared up! Great series I will forever remember!

I'm excited to watch a slightly different version of the show than I'm accustomed to. I know there's a good chunk of story that I never got to see. My only complaint so far, though, is that the English subtitles are pretty bad. Names keep being translated as other things: "My lady" instead of "Meiniang", "The Wrath" instead of "Zhinu", "Sword test" instead of "Chengxin", etc. The subtitles in general just don't make sense in a lot of places.

Les costumes étaient incroyables, les détails décors dans chaque scène sublimes !!! J'avais du mal avec les drama des années 90/2000 trop criards à mon goût !!! Et bien c'était génial merci 🙏 pour les titres multisub toutes langues car bcp trop ne sont qu'en anglais et tout le monde n'aime ou ne comprend pas l'anglais !!! Alors merci 🙏 🙏 !!! Mon grand regret dans ce drama et incompréhension c'est quand elle enceinte la premier fois de zhinu alors qu'il n'y avait aucune scène d'eux intimes physiquement ils auraient eu une aventure le soir de la mort de l'empereur ??! Et font comme s'il ne s'était rien passé jamais existé c'était incompréhensible pour les téléspectateurs !!! Et la fin du 3eme frère sa mort sans rien savoir alors qu'il était un personnage central et au final le plus loyal quel document comme s'il n'avait jamais existé jusqu'au j'imaginais qu'il allait réapparaître et qu'on louerait sa loyauté mais non !!! Les manipulations complots sur tout le 1er arc avec le 1er harem c'était super plein de complots trahison suspense!!! La pire c'était sa première amie !!! Ensuite le second harem beaucoup moins palpitant assez prévisible !!! Certains méritaient une mort atroce le 4eme frère, la meilleur amie, la princesse gao yang, son second fils, mingye !!! Et la reine yang qui au final était innocente meritait d'être sauvée pas mourir ainsi !!! On a pas vu un seul bisous entre eux mais avec mingue la nièce insuffisant oui une scène de baisers !!! J'aurais la voir enceinte de ces 2 autres fils, qu'elle avoue que le premier bb était le fils de zhinu et qu'on la voit un peu gouverner en tant qu'imperatrice!!! D'ailleurs je n'ai pas compris comment elle l'est devenu vu que ct le petit gros prince héritier et elle impératrice douairière donc pas mal d'incompréhension !!! Je vais allez rechercher des exploitations et lire la vraie histoire !!! Merci très beau drama

They were her advisors and there is no evidence to substantiate that they were lovers. She was a female Emperor, and as all woman in the past, they were looked down upon by men as property, and her having the highest power over all men back then, most likely led the men who wrote the histories to portray her in a negative light, so no one really knows what she really was like. If she was really that horrible, she wouldn't have been beloved by two emperors and been able to govern their whole nation for so long.

Hey guys!!!! this is the FULL version but the *eng subtitles* are half screwed and half good. If you want *"good subtitles"* head over to dramanice or watchasian, *"Empress of China"* is title to put in search box. The problem is tho ... 9, 10 episodes were cut out, and you won't get the same beginning. Only 74 eps. So make your mind up before u start. I'm staying here since Im already on ep 12 and I like the parts in this FULL version
