@@ln5747 the update is that the engine gave up due to a bad timing chain tensioner. Drove to long with it knowing it should be replaced. But in the workshop it went wrong with cranking the engine. The chain Jumped. Engine failure…. In the meantime we bought a simulair Audi A6 3.2L with a multitronic again. Lower on the mileage (236.000km) but also replaced the standard filter into the magnefine filter and changed the differential oil (1,3L) i also use a additive in the multironic from (Polytron) what is available in the USA

@ln5747 2 жыл бұрын
@@sm7091bs thanks for the reply. What mileage did you get the first one to? Also, I presume by the sounds of it it was a petrol/gasoline engine, not diesel, given it had timing chain? My multitronic is at 115k miles, it concerns me given what people say but I've had no issues and plenty seem to have good experiences with them.
@sm7091bs
@sm7091bs 2 жыл бұрын
@@ln5747 i believe the engine failed at 397.000km due to my own fault. It is very important with the multitronic to change the oil. 60.000km is the interval. I would suggest to do it a little earlier. I am a car mechanic for 35 years so I maintain it by myself. But google on a magnefine inline filter. The original one what is fitted near the radiator on the right side seen from the driving position should be cut off through the aluminum line’s . This one was also fitted in the other A6. And the additive Polytron MTC was also added to the oil inside the multitronic and differential. This product is really a big benefit for the longer life of the multitronic. If you need more info i could give you my e-mail adress. The car was by the way a petrol car. Even the “new” one is a petrol
@ln5747
@ln5747 2 жыл бұрын
@@sm7091bs thanks for the info. I would be happy with 397k. Mine is 2.0tdi which generally seem to last longer than the petrol. Thanks for the offer, but hopefully that will be enough info and I will speak to my mechanic. Should most dealers/specialists be aware of what you suggested? I have had my gearbox oil changed at 80k miles (unsure if it got done at 40k by previous owner) and about to have it done again. I will keep doing it every 40k miles as Audi recommends. But I shall look at these extra recommendations you suggest. I can see the engine lasting a long time and everything else. The one thing that will fail and probably write the car off would be the multitronic if it fails. Would maybe not be worth fixing. So I will look after it as I still love the car and have no desire for a new one.

most automatic trannies require the engine to run when checking oil level. i believe this one does too. also need to go thru the gears a few times to make sure oil circles eveywhere. waiting the temp to rise i would think has more to do with oil cooler circulation than expansion of the liquid
@imfbankfoolsus1026
@imfbankfoolsus1026 21 күн бұрын
I agree with temperature nothing to do with expansion. I drained my 0NW VL380 and let it drip it seems to keep leaking out from upper system so I put 4.5 liter and let leak out +-100ml and closed filling go drive around let it cool down put in all gear while running and open again almost nothing came out refil 0.5 liter while running and still nothing come out so I put another 0.8 and saw it leak and just closed it. So total of 5.7 liters this alings with what he said in end of video of that he used 5.5 liters. Anyway this was my 2de filling in +- 100km previous I just put 5 liters and let drip some out like 0.2 liters so it's not enough because I open the filling plug and it was dripping out like it should be than I put off engine and it stopped dripping for a while. So I guess 5.5liters is the the amount to add if its dripped out well. Most of kits used 6 bottles of 1 liter so if 5 is just enough and 1 liter to much on that surface area in the reservoir you talking about 1 cm to hight level it absurd how small difference it would make. I think 1 cm to low level would also not do anything. So better to much I would not make more fuss about this difference of nothing 5.5 is perfect if you take time to drain out. some don't have patience and drain only 4 liters and put in 6 back in and that could make problems maybe. I use Castrol transmax CVT oil and gearbox seems to be happy. I buy a 20l can for 170 euro and flush it twice. I have 280000 km on 2.8fsi (220hp)with until now no problems.

So basically: 1. Drain the transmission fluid when it's cold 2. Refill new transmission fluid until it starts dripping out the hole 3. Start the engine and rev it quickly to remove any air from the transmission 4. At idle speed, run it through all the gears, 3 seconds each 5. Let the transmission fluid reach temperature between 35-40 degree celsius 6. Top off the transmission fluid until it drips out the hole again Am I missing anything?

That's basically it - make sure you pump enough new oil into the system - it's not just a case of replacing the amount that came out. Always refer to the official manuals for the exact procedure/amounts - I'm only providing these videos for entertainment purposes - I'm definitely not a professional mechanic - I take no responsibilities! There are MANY different gearboxes in the VW/Audi Group and they all require different amounts/specifications of oil. Basically, the procedure is the same though - it's the details that are different. Some require the engine running for the final top up, some say the opposite.
@Eric36h
@Eric36h 4 жыл бұрын
@@dukeofhuzza Ok, vielen dank! According to the repair manual that I have, I can see the procedure is more less the same but I will definitely go by the manual. However, one thing I'm concerned about is that I've heard many horror stories about automatic transmissions get ruined after changing the fluid (if it's never been changed before), have you heard of that? I'm basically a bit reluctant to do this on my Audi...
@dukeofhuzza
@dukeofhuzza 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve changed 3 Audi boxes over the years - all were regularly serviced throughout the cars’ lives. I have also heard that certain boxes are prone to failure - with VW/Audi it’s a bit of a gamble - sometimes it’s the engines, sometimes the gearboxes, sometimes the electronics. I’ve only heard of one gearbox failure (in my “circle”) and that was due to never ever being serviced. Good luck!👍

@@Eric36h , Erik, the transmissions that could be damaged by a fresh oil change are NOT the CVT. The others fail because the new high detergent fluid washes the accumulated particles out of the clutches, but, the CVT has no clutches it has a steel belt instead. With a Merecedes (e.g.) you have to drain the torque converter as well as the sump as the sump only holds about 3.5L whereas full g.box capacity is 8L. I have seen people with their demo's on KZbin doing MB auto' trans' putting 3L of new ATF into 5L of remaining dirty ATF after just draing g.box sump. Thank you

Hi, nice video overall you covered several important points about having the car level and using the correct cvt gearbox oil but you did an important part wrong, setting the oil level. The engine must be running to set the oil level. As you said the oil temperature should be between 35 and 45 Celsius. So after you pump the new oil in you start the engine and with the oil temperature in the correct range you then add oil until it starts to drip out from the fill port. When the oil stops dripping out from the fill port you fit the plug and you're done. Did you notice how much oil came out at the beginning when you removed the fill plug when the engine was off? If you had removed the fill plug with the engine running (oil pumps in the gearbox running) you would only have had a small amount of oil drain out, the oil that was in the stand pipe of the filler port. Your gearbox now has as much as 1 litre too little oil in it. They hold about 7 1/2 litres in total including the oil in the oil cooler and lines and pumps etc. and on an oil change you typically get about 4 1/2 to 5 litres out when you drain it.

Gartshore's Garage thanks a lot for this video, i just subscribed to your channel... Born in France, studied in US, UK and Germany and now living in the madness of South Africa driving a stunning A4 B8 2010... I cannot find a reliable place to change the multitronic GB oil.. Any tips about the software you used? Where to purchase the pump and more importantly, if it is the same access plugs for an A4 B8 from 2010? Tnx for your video 👍🏻

Hi, thanks for subscribing! The software is VCDS used via a Ross Tech interface. It’s not cheap, but it’s basically the same system used by most professionals. As for getting the oil changed - there are bound to be a few good techs around - check out your local forums! I bought my pump on eBay, there are plenty on offer around the world. As for the plugs on your gearbox - you’ll have to get down there and have a look! Most were the 01J model. Good luck!

As the multitronic doesn't have gears as such, that's not relevant here. But don't take my word on it! Regular automatic boxes DO require that all gears are selected after a change.

It seems based on the number of Multi CVT failures on the Audi A6 B6 you're suspicions on Long Life oil aren't entirely unfounded (esp as Audi themselves suggest the 60km oil change). However interesting thing is, when i've spoken to two Audi dealers about how much oil is required to refill both Audi dealers replied with 7.5 litres. Interesting that you suggest only 5.5l is required (does make a cost difference)

There is a filter inside the transmission in the c5. And an inline filter in the cooler line. The one inside the transmission requires that you pull the Trans and split the case. It's usually only serviced at rebuild. The c6 onward has a plastic filter cartridge that fits into the top of the Trans. A real pain to get to. Changing the fluid at 60k seems to be enough to work through the life of the Trans. Mine has 210k, it runs great.

@dukeofhuzza
@dukeofhuzza 4 ай бұрын
Nope - the filter is buried deep within the CVT transmission and requires serious dismantling of the gearbox itself. This generation of CVT doesn't have any "speeds" as such anyway. Do you maybe mean the 7-speed DSG? That definitely has a filter that can easily be changed when doing a fluid change.

The main filter is within the multitronic and can not be replaced. Only when you open the gearbox for a repair. There is a microfilter fitted beside the radiator. I cut this one out and placed 2x 12mm rubber hose on both ends en between it i fitted a inline filter from magnefine. These work very good to get the contamination within the gearbox what goes through the main filter.

@dukeofhuzza
@dukeofhuzza 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the amount of oil that was drained from the transmission. In MY case, it was around 5.5 L, others often need more - Audi themselves charge for 7.5. The level always has to be checked at the right temperature. That is the most important part of an oil change on these gearboxes!

You can try the gravity method - hold the bottle up high, let the oil "fall" in. It still requires the correct plug and will make more mess. I'm a bit puzzled. Audi specify that you change the gearbox oil filter with every oil change. If that's the case, surely it must be something you can't do yourself... or what? But maybe it isn't necessary after all? Also, is it a very special program you use on the computer, or does VCDS have a function to view oil temp?
@dukeofhuzza
@dukeofhuzza 5 жыл бұрын
The problem with Multitronic gearboxes is you can’t get to the filter without removing and disassembling the gearbox. Other gearboxes require regular filter changes - the filter is located just inside the sump pan. Yes - VCDS does read gearbox oil temperature!

It all depends on how much you pumped in on refilling. Here’s an excerpt from the official blurb: Run the engine in P and monitor the temperature When the ATF has reached a temperature of 35°C, unscrew ATF inspection plug -B-. When the plug is opened, approx. 5 cl of ATF will always run out of the inner oil level tube If ATF continues to come out through ATF inspection opening via overflow pipe before ATF has reached a temperature of 40 °C, the ATF level is OK. ATF inspection plug must be screwed in again at the latest when ATF reaches temperature of 45 °C (countries with hot climates: 50 °C). If ATF temperature exceeds 45 °C too much fluid will escape as it expands when heated. In this case the quantity of fluid in the gearbox is NOT sufficient! If no ATF fluid has drained out of the inspection plug when temperature reaches 40 °C, top up ATF

Multi-tronic is VW’s name for the CVT. The CVT uses an internal screen (like some Hondas) which is only accessible by dropping the unit and cracking it open. There is a filter inline on the cooler line, but not everyone bothers to change it. The official repair info only calls for a drain and refill.

@dukeofhuzza
@dukeofhuzza 2 жыл бұрын
This kind of gearbox does not allow for "normal" filling. The fluid has to be pumped back in through the sump plug as shown. Also, in order to get the correct level, the procedure must be followed, including reaching the correct temperature, when the final level is adjusted (with the engine running)! It's complicated, but it's the only way!
