The number of arms on Ganesh (from 2 to 20) statues and paintings do not indicate the actual number of arms, rather they denote his many attributes and abilities. He is the god of learning, reading, writing, intelligence, knowledge, Sciences, arts, prosperity, and other attributes. He is the Lord of Obstacles. He can either remove obstacles, or place obstacles. He almost always has a big belly and an elephant head. There are many stories from the far corners of India and across time about Ganesh and his appearance. In one story he was born from Siva's laughter, and Siva decided that he was too good looking, so he gave him a big belly and an elephant's head. Most stories either say he was created by Siva, or by Siva's consort Parvati, or both. In some stories Parvati created him out of clay to ward off loneliness and/or danger while Siva was away on his own business. Perhaps Parvati had become pregnant before Siva left, too soon to notice, and Siva did not expect that he had a son waiting for him with his mom. In one story Parvati is inside the house getting ready to bath and orders her son (with a normal human head) to guard the door to make sure she wasn't disturbed. At this point Shiva arrives back home and finds a young boy resolutely placing himself between Shiva, the stranger, and Shiva's love. The young Ganesh tries to fight Shiva and Shiva, not knowing that this was his son, simply smacks Ganesh's head clear off of his body. When Parvati comes out from her bath she is surprised at the return of Shiva, and is further freaked out by the sight of her son's body, minus his head. She screams at Shiva to return the boys head, but Shiva declares that by the time he finds the head it will be too late. Distraught, she screams to him to either find their son's head or the first head he sees. Shiva, now realizing who the boy was, goes out to look for a head and brings back the first one he sees. He brings back the head of an elephant and attaches it to the boy's body and revives him. Along with the head and the big belly, you might notice that Ganesh has a broken tusk. One story claims that he became Shiva's scribe. At one point he can't find a pen to write with quickly enough, so he snaps off one of his own tusks to dip into ink and write with. 🙂
