I recently DoP'd a short film, and it was the most rewarding experience I have had in filmmaking for years, and it has put into question everything I thought I wanted from being a cinematographer. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to have a concrete 1 year, 5 year, lifelong plan, but this video is all about the unexpected twists and turns that a life can take to carry you to a destination that maybe you had no intention of arriving at, for better or for worse.
If you want to know more about the short film, check out Aram:

Honeslty mumbo, that hits me hard. As a 16 year old I’ve been heavily anxious about how my life will pan out. I have heaps of goals such as being a comedian, working on films or even writing stuff or being a youtuber. but it allways comes with a looping sense of fear that’s generated by the void filled with endless possibilities for the future And this video made me genuinely smile, made me feel a bit more comfortable. You go for it man! If you want to be a comedian, sign up for the school talent show! You want to work on films? Film stuff! Enter film festivals and competitions! You want to write? Start now! Write your heart out, and then *do something with it*. You want to make KZbin videos, make KZbin videos! If those are your dreams, then you dont have to wait until graduation to start. Do the things you enjoy now. With any luck, if you keep at them long enough, doors will start to open.

As a 22-year-old uni student studying construction engineering. I found that it's my hobbies and passions that keep me going and not the end goal of being an engineer. I found that I enjoy ballroom dancing, and building furniture. I have joined a recreational ballroom team that motivates me and rejuvenates me during the hard periods of uni. Spending time with my fiance is also another thing that keeps me sane. My bit of advice for the younger crowd is find a mentor or people who can speak into you and help you in the hard times.

Have you found engineering to be something that you would enjoy as an occupation because I have thought on the idea of going into engineering but as a 16-year old student I don’t have much of an idea of what it would be like.I enjoy the design and technology classes and a lot of my relatives have gone into building, carpentry or some other form of construction. Any thoughts would be helpful.

@@jarry3687 Hi, I'm 23 and am currently studying mechanical engineering in my master semesters. My advice would be if you are interested in technical things you should totally go for it. Since I was a kid I had a good understanding of 3d space and could "render" my lego technic designs in my head and on the next morning I would get up and build those plans I made in my head. Furthermore I'm a logical person so I picked up things like programming and the general understanding how thinks work pretty fast. What you can expect of mechanical engineering depends on where you want to go with it. Most importantly you will need to find creative innovative solutions to technical problems and conceptualize them in your head and in a design software (cad). You will need to verify your designs with simulations (they are mostly straight forward and you will learn how to use them and set them up at uni and at work).

I’ve always been into music and my life has always been involved in music in some way or another. When I turned 18 I had to get a “real” job and that kind of pushed music out of my life for a while. Recently I’ve picked back up producing and writing. At the age of 22 it’s a little more difficult to find time between having meaningful relationships, doing the whole adult thing, and having your hobbies that you’re really passionate about. But if you can just hold onto those hobbies, you may find yourself in a career path that involves it. The one thing I always tell myself when I get into some new: “Become obsessed, because that’s where you’ll be the happiest.”

Amazing! The thing about succes is we all have to define what succes means / is for us and what we measure it by, and only we can do this for ourselves. I think its about the values we choose to care about. So to better rephrase your words i'd say : "i want to live by values that i get to choose for myself, and succeed in what i choose to dedicate myself to rather than honor a superficial view of success" and that sounds to me like quite the meaningful work and life. And when there's meaning behind what we do, that's a succesful life, subjectively and objectively and astraly and whatever other plane or dimension there is )))))))) So whether you're "succesful" or not it couldn't matter less, You're a badass😎 Much love.

What I find enjoyable despite being terrible is programming. I found that game development is something I wanted to do but it was such a daunting task. I have gone in circles thinking about this. I am going into the computer sciences and will want a stable job but I want to make video games or write stories. I'm a huge nerd and spend my time writing and playing D&D Campaigns. It's a weird hobby but I love it. I never expect to make money and probably never will. Your story was nice to hear. This video really made me smile and made me realise that it's okay that I'm unsure - because opportunities will be presented to me and at some point, I'll find what's right for me. Thanks, mumbo.

I was absolutely sure I wanted to go into architecture, until I found an urban planning program at a large and prestigious university I was excited about. I got in and studied it for a year, but realized it wasn't at all what I expected or wanted for my career, and that my mental health was worse than I thought, and that I cannot learn effectively in a lecture hall with 500 other students, so I dropped out. I was then told about a historic preservation course at a small local university, and my love for historic buildings told me it was the right thing to do. Now I'm in my senior year of the program, I've co-authored two historic architectural surveys in state and federal archives, and I'm looking for masters degree programs in historic architectural preservation. All I know is that I want to spend my career conserving and rehabilitating the world's historic structures.

Your comment on hustle culture and productivity reminded me of this quote: "Your own happiness can be something you produce." - Hank Green (paraphrased) I completely agree that productivity isn't an end goal in itself. At the end of the day, it won't matter what numbers are in your bank account or how many awards there are in your shelf, but it'll matter how you felt and how you made people feel. And if an activity makes you feel happy or peaceful or satisfied, then that alone is a reason to pursue it. I'm nearly done with my education, and I'm yet to find out what I will do after that. I'm quite active in the arts, but I hesitate to make this my job because I don't want to use all of my creative outlet on work and have nothing for my personal projects. @Mumbo: How do you experience that? Does your creative job take away from the things you're personally working on, or does it have a different effect?

Keep doing what ur doing man cos u will have no clue who i am but u can be so relatable and give people a distraction or a laugh or in this case the drive to achieve something whatever way they feel works for them. This is exactly the video I needed at the exact time I needed it. I started watching your videos when I was an 8th grader researching high schools, and now I'm a high school senior currently researching colleges. I have so many broad interests (music, programming, filming, broadcasting, writing) and it's incredibly hard to just choose one to go into. Making a choice to choose which one I'm most passionate about or which major I want in college is the most difficult choice I've had to make so far, except I haven't made it yet. I have no idea what's going to happen, but I hope whatever it might be is both fun and gives to other people more than it gives me. Thanks Oli!

I never knew what I wanted to do as a kid. When I was 14 I decided that I wanted to go into a medical field - I was really interested in hearts and human biology. This involved a lot of chemistry though, which I don't like. Nearing the end of high school, I had a chat to a careers advisor who gave me a figurative slap in the face and told me I could do biological stuff without going into the medical field. I'm doing biological sciences at uni now, we'll see where that takes us :D

As a 17 year old in his second year of college, I am bombarded with the idea that I need to start thinking about what I want to do for a career. This is the same for many, if not all students; we are always told to pick what subjects we would like to do and what course or a-levels we "need to choose" that will give us the best opportunities in life but in reality there are so many roads and paths that we can go down that will allow us to change our career in an instant. This video really sums up the fact that you should never set your mind on one thought and one thought alone. Thank you Mumbo.

Accidently clicked on this video, primarily watching mumbo for the Minecraftin’. As a person who is striving to improve productivity, being healthier, being a strength athlete whilist also starting college in a little while, this is the most motivational and anxiety-relieving video I’ve ever seen. This was well worth watching and listening to. It almost got me emotional and I’ll save this video for when times are hard. Having a certain idea of what life could or should be doesn’t necessairly mean it turns out that way. And that’s perfectly fine, just relax and be passionate. Money and fame aint it. The message in this video is crystal clear.

Oli, in all seriousness I found this video VERY inspirational and "calming" in a way... I LOVE listening to people's history, and what they want to do in life. I myself am only 14, but I've figured out that I want to join the Royal Navy as a submarine engineer... I've been told by MANY people that I'm "very lucky" to have found what I want to do in life at such a young age. however, I have recently taken an interest in content creation, so I'll see where that leads me... finally, I appreciate what you have done, in the sense of creating an area for people to talk about their lives in a friendly way. what you've done as a person has really amazed me. keep it up and a VERY big well done for being who you are, and what you've completed in life

Thank you for this video! I’m 16, turning 17 soon, and my life has changed quite a decent amount these past few months. I’m starting my last year of high school, I started driving, I started applying to universities, and many other things have changed. Ive definitely been feeling a lot of anxiety about my future, and often feel rushed to figure things out. I started realizing lately that it’s okay to slow down every now and then, and to experience the little moments. Enable to help me slow down once in a while, I started going on bike rides too! It’s funny because sometimes I’d go out and bike 10 miles at 6am just to come back and open my phone to see your posts about your latest biking adventure. Super nice to see others who enjoy cycling too. Love this video, I really connected with it.

this video is very real for me; i'm currently supposed to be working on college applications and sending in scores, having no idea what to do or where to go - and it seems like those are the two most crucial things i should already know. our perspectives and passions are constantly changing, and i wish i had spent more time doing what i loved to prepare for the future. how teenagers, college students, and even adults, are supposed to know exactly what to do with their lives - its genuinely mind boggling for me. so thank you mumbo for this video, it gives me some peace of mind :))

I really enjoyed your "rambling" and it cheered up quite a lot right now. I have no clue, what I want from life in general, and I have extreme anxiety about being unable to find a career I can pursue with passion (having already found out that trying to 9-to-5 something I'm not interested utterly destroys my mental health). Hearing you confirm my vain hope that there are paths outside the norm, that a "career" can be winding and evolving, staying fresh and interesting, is really something. Because the only thing I know for sure is that I adore change. I love learning about new random things, pursuing different hobbies all the time, doing short-term projects that last a few weeks at most. But I have extreme trouble staying engaged in anything at all for longer periods of time. I am very afraid of being milled to dust by this world while I lack the power and motivation to move onwards, lacking anything to strive for. But this Video added to the small pool of hope I keep in my mind, that makes me at least manage my day-to-day life.

I’m up to having multiple panic attacks in a day and I’m considering applying for temporary disability while I try to work on myself and my mental health. Even so I’ve felt frequent anxiety just from the idea that I need to “be productive” and find a “side job” of sorts and it’s really not helping with the mental health issues I’m going through! I spent my 20s and most of my 30s in a controlling relationship where I wasn't allowed to work or finish my degree. I had to start from scratch in my late 30s: no savings, little work history, no training. Bulldozed through my degree full time, summers too, while working as the coordinator of the campus food pantry. I was surprised by how much I loved working with and training students. I graduated last year, right as the pandemic hit. No one was hiring. So I took on a master's in library and information systems and finished it in a year. I started this summer in circulation at an academic library at a liberal arts college. Part of why they hired me was my food pantry experience: supervising student volunteers, serving the public, reorganizing during a pandemic. Didn't expect at all to be working in a library. Didn't have any idea what doors would open for me when I started putting myself out there. Now I'm in a great workplace, learning a lot, putting my education to good use, with opportunities for professional development in all sorts of new directions. It wasn't a concrete plan that got me out of the hole; it was showing up every day and putting in the work until it began paying off.

Thanks for this video, Mumbo. I'm a 22 year old computer science student who's pursuing filmmaking and taking an extra semester because of the extra film work that I've done over the last couple years. They've all been club/class/personal projects, and I have yet to step onto a professional set. I constantly find myself worrying if what I'm doing is enough. Hustle culture definitely gets to me... I feel that every second that I spend not chasing my goals is a second wasted, and I punish myself harshly at times. Hearing your story gives me hope that success can be found with an unconventional path, and hard work can get you somewhere, whether or not it's the exact place you were shooting for in the first place.

honestly, as someone who is homeschooled and never feels like theyre being "productive enough", this made me feel so much better. i have a lot of hobbies and enjoy so many things but everyone always makes me feel like i should be making a huge career out of it (those things being crocheting, drawing, writing, and i'm a small youtuber and twitch streamer too). i feel so disappointed in myself if i think i havent got a lot of those things done in the day and i think i probably could maybe make a career in the future out of all of my hobbies or any new hobby i find but as a 14 year old this video has made me realise i should just enjoy my life and do what i want to do, not what other people are telling me i should do or not what i'm telling myself i "need" to do. just this 5 minute video has made me think a lot about all that honestly and has actually made me realise i dont have to worry about always being productive all of the time, so thank u :)
