For the record (because a lot of people in chat were asking): She's had this whole conversation before, which included "I don't like yuri either" and really she just finds romance fiction in general to be obnoxious unless its puppy love, particularly between small children. I guess the reasoning being that it feels more natural when the narrative drags it out when its two kids.

My understanding was that BL is the term more commonly used in Japanese, while Yaoi was used more by western anime fans. Although could be wrong as its largely something I steer clear of.

Yeah at least back when, people never said BL in the west only yaoi. Nowadays, at least in fandoms like this with lots of cultural overlap with jp audiences, BL is the more common word.

Semantic Language Nerd lesson: Yaoi is an outdated term that hasn't been used in earnest by the Japanese since at least the late 2000's. Both Yaoi and BL refer to any guy-on-guy stuff, regardless of spice level.

Yeah that's what I figured. Similar to how Yuri as any girl-on-girl in JP but in the west for some reason we decided Yuri is nsfw and Shoujo Ai is wholesome.

I can understand getting frustrated at multiple misunderstandings, but those can happen in relationships, its just hyper dramatized for a show, just like everything. If you're frustrated, you're engaged and not just apathetic. And for some writers, that is the entire point, to keep you engaged rather than just placating you.

The 'many stupid problems' Mumei complains about in romance anime is a product of poor writing and a failure of basic imagination on the part of the author. Unfortunately, such instances of bad writing are commonplace in that genre. However, there are genuinely well-written romance anime that are out there. Off the top of my head, Fruits Basket, Horimiya, Devil's Line, Fly me to the Moon, Insomniacs after School, and Higehiro. I think the reason why those are all great though, is that the romance is only part of a larger story and the characters grow in ways that are more significant than 'do I like/not like this person, and do they like/not like me.' Contrast all of those with something like Orange, despite it being a beloved shoujo anime with a focus on romance, and despite it even having a central conceit that _shouldn't necessarily_ center romance, one that could have been utilized much more effectively, it fell into the same old traps that shoujo/romance stories typically blunder into, where much of the conflict and drama are centered around misunderstandings. The characters are not making informed decisions, and so they're not really able to make _meaningful_ choices that actually enable them to grow beyond who they are. None of the anime I named in my 'good' list have that problem. I wonder if Mumei would like one of those. . . I think she might especially appreciate Devil's Line.

Yeah, most romance anime has find reasons for the leads to not get together yet especially if the series gets popular. Got to milk it for as much money as possible. It often gets to point that people just stop reading/watching because the author is obviously trying to milk it with stupid drama getting in the way.

I really just see BL as the same as yuri except for a pre-dominantly female audience. Both can be enjoyed by everyone, however. For some reason, I see BL treated as way more “taboo” despite the underlying concepts being the same as yuri, and yuri is treated like this “sacred” thing.

I can tell you, in almost all non-bait serious yaoinive read, there is almost always an element of rape, usually of an older male to a younger one, who later end up enjoying it,(female sexual fetishes yardage yadda) on yuri this whole idea doesn't really exist whatsoever and is in general waaaaaaybmore wholesome, I speak as somebody who has read both a ton
