This song saved me from the worst suicidal depression of my life. 13 years later, it's a reminder of my resiliance, what i can overcome, and power of the right music at the right time. I did hold on to hope and i did change my ways, and i know the woman i am today has the strength to make it through anything.

And I'm glad people relate to me and who has similar experience. and thank you for sharing your story so I wanna share mine ❤❤❤❤

Yeah you don’t hear bands like this, Guster, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire anymore… at least not in the mainstream. Really gotta dig. We call it an era because a lot of people liked those sorts of bands and there was a lot to choose from. I also wish for a revival of Folk/folk pop. I think some people decided it was “hipster” music and was cringe or something and the demand went down, but bands like Fleet Foxes and others in that genre are SO underrated. ❤

I just had the urge to listen to some of mumford's songs, it's hard to believe this is 14 years old already. My mom and I used to listen to them because we loved their music. She passed away several years ago but hearing these songs makes me both happy and sad at the memories. I'm thankful that mumford and sons exists though, for having those moments with her.

When this song was on the radio I was living alone with my alcoholic mother. When we finally got evicted she lied to me and told me we had to move in with her boyfriend (who I barely knew) because she had a stalker, and that we'd have to empty my bank account to do it. I was working for barely more than minimum wage at the time. I knew she was lying because that's just what she did. I packed my stuff into my car, ignored her screaming the whole time, and drove off and that was the last time I saw her for 2 years. This song came on just as I was getting on the highway. Today I'm doing very well: I have a good job and a nice apartment and I'm learning how to cultivate healthy relationships. And to this day I still can't hear this song without breaking down in tears: for me it commemorates the single biggest turning point in my life.

My ex-wife was an alcoholic as well, Amanda. She made me feel so worthless that I basically felt like I HAD to stay with her or I'd forever be alone because no one else would could possibly care about me. This song always reminds me of her BS and I completely understand you on the "turning point" in life. Just over 3 years apart now and feeling much better. I truly wish you good luck on patching things up with your mom. A marriage can eventually be gotten over and forgotten about, a mother-daughter bond can not.

The darkest time of my life, 20+ years ago, never had a song that summed it up until I heard this for the first time. The pain, suffering, and eventual triumph of light over darkness, all encapsulated in a simple melody and lyrics. Every couple years I fire it up again to remind myself of what I endured and survived. Rock on survivors, look at and appreciate every new day as the miracle it is, and every sunset as if it might be your last. Drink deep from the cup of life and make the world a better place for having you in it.

I can relate. I just had to break up with a crazy ex who I used to love but used pot as self medication for bipolar who tried to use her siren's call on me but I would not hear what she had to say. She was great in tbe beginning but over the past year, she gaslit me, emotionally and mentally abused me, and even slapped me, knowing my past with an abusive ex gf, tried to stab me in the face with a fork during a fight, and insulted the gf I dated before her, who passed away in 2018. Even saying she looked like a B-based slur that's used towards Latinos. Both the deceased ex and I are of partial Spanish and Portuguese origin so this was extremely insulting. Same goes towards her saying I had a "Dann J3w nose" while I am also someone who has a bit of Ashkenazi heritage. I can relate to you in this sense 100% and hope you find better days

I believe the "you" in this song is an abuser. In my opinion you have to look at the next line to make sense of the first one: "the harvest left no fruit for you to eat, you cannibal, you meat-eater." In other words, they have nothing that belongs to them because of their self-destructive tendencies and they have to become predators to the fruits of labor to those around them.

This song was my anthem as I left my ex. She was abusive on all fronts.. I even quoted this song as I delivered the final blow while breaking up with her with the Siren's Call part of the song. I'm in a healthy relationship with a fellow autistic girl and my ex sits at her friend's house smoking dabs and drinking like the unemployed and unemployable loser she is. Like I drink moderately and I think the green stuff should be legal in all 50, but damn if you don't work, then you don't need to be getting fucked up all of the time.

I joined the Mumford and Sons fan group way to late. I only discovered them about 6 months ago. They deserved so much more fame then they got. They put so much passion into their music. They don’t sing terrible lyrics like the current pop singers do. They made deep lyrics like Simon and Garfunkel used to. Their current music just isn’t the same. There are some good ones like forever, but it is missing the vibe these old songs have. I don’t know if there are many people like me, just wishing they could have been around to hear them play their old songs like where are you now or there will be time. I doubt there will ever be a band quite like them again.

I grew up in a fairlly Christian country but my parents and none of my surrounding adults were religious, if anything they were theologists and ethymoloigsts. When I first listeneds to this song it reminded me of the greeky myths I read as a child, including Odysseus / Ulysses escaping the Cyclop by either crawling among sheep or hanging upside down from their bellies by clutching onto their wool. And while I know there are many Christian and also Mythical influiences on their music, Mumford and Sons gave me a push towards defining divinity for myself with songs like this. There is a certain divine presence in ourselves and we, as human beings, get to decide what that means. But by the end of thje day what is most important is to keep anything alive alive and that while we might have different ideas, we are all human and we want other humans happy and healthy. Imho, what makes us human is kindness and kinship. And I don't care if my life only influences a single human to make their day better. I want to be a positive or happy influence, even for just a second :3

It's empty in the valley of your heart The sun, it rises slowly as you walk Away from all the fears And all the faults you've left behind The harvest left no food for you to eat You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see But I have seen the same I know the shame in your defeat But I will hold on hope And I won't let you choke On the noose around your neck And I'll find strength in pain And I will change my ways I'll know my name as it's called again ‘Cause I have other things to fill my time You take what is yours and I'll take mine Now let me at the truth Which will refresh my broken mind So tie me to a post and block my ears I can see widows and orphans through my tears I know my call despite my faults And despite my growing fears But I will hold on hope And I won't let you choke On the noose around your neck And I'll find strength in pain And I will change my ways I'll know my name as it's called again So come out of your cave walking on your hands And see the world hanging upside down You can understand dependence When you know the maker's land So make your siren's call And sing all you want I will not hear what you have to say ‘Cause I need freedom now And I need to know how To live my life as it's meant to be And I will hold on hope And I won't let you choke On the noose around your neck And I'll find strength in pain And I will change my ways I'll know my name as it's called again

This song makes me cry To me this song means a lot, I am a survivor, a survivor of anxiety, depression.. And cancer. I hide all my feelings and I need to come out of MY cave. When I was little I told my dad I took a depression test and had 98% (Severe Depression) and because I hid my feelings for a while actually, he said “No, your to happy” I ran to my room and started crying and saying to myself “This is what you get for not telling him sooner, you deserve this” I ran away from home and ran into the woods, I found someone doing suicide and they tied themselves on a rope, and died, it had been the worst day of my life, I ran back home and my dad found me running in, of corse he got mad and started yelling, he didn’t listen to what I said, he just yelled. At the time I had no friends but the next day at school, there was someone new in the class, we got to know each other and up to this day, we are still best friends, and we sing this song to each other when we’re feeling down ever since we were little, it sounds childish to others but when you do something for a while, you stick to it. We actually live together in an apartment and I’m at my first year in collage, I’m stressed about it, but it’s working out, and she has a part time job at McDonald’s. I hope whoever is reading this has a great day!

This is not a happy song. This is not a sad song. This is a real song. A song able to bring people to tears in happiness or sadness, either one or the other depending on what's happening, or make people feel both at once. A song about hardship and hope, rebirth and accepence of ones past. Able to make the depressed hope and it to actually mean something as the song resonates within them deeply, as though it was made specially for them. This I say from personal experience.

Firstly let me clear the air for you guys here! this Video was shot in a place i call Home, as i am a Goan, this Video was shot in Goa, India. as most people that might not know Goa, it use to be the birth place of the Hippie culture in the 1960's, and prior to that it was an integral part of Portugal, which had it from the 1510 ! 1961 (officially recognized by Portugal in 1974), Goa was known as Quem viu Goa, excusa de ver Lisboa (He who has seen Goa need not see Lisbon) ... hence we Goans are highly influenced by Portuguese Culture, Dancing and Singing is in our blood, and we have a very unique way of life... besides the longest beaches that run from one end to another in Asia. We have the oldest functioning Light House built in 1612 and we have the Largest Church called the Sé Catedral de Santa Catarina, known as Se Cathedral As for the people that called us Black, we are Asian and are generally regarded as Brown or TAN skinned as we are situated on the coastal belt and the Sun is not only hot, there is a lot of salinity in the air too... if the skin color is so important to you guys!

Mumford and Sons are singing about St. Francis of Assisi's conversion to following Jesus (probably based on the account by G.K. Chesterton). The song uses the allegory of the cave (via Plato) and symbolism from the Odyssey (via Homer) to make this beautiful song. Look at the bridge: So come out of the cave walking on your hands, and see the world hanging upside down, you can understand dependence when you know the Maker's land "The man who went into the cave was not the man who came out again; in that sense he was almost as different as if he were dead, as if he were a ghost or a blessed spirit. And the effects of this on his attitude towards the actual world were really as extravagant as any parallel can make them. He looked at the world as differently from other men as if he had come out of that dark hole walking on his hands… If a man saw the world upside down, with all the trees and towers hanging head downwards as in a pool, one effect would be to emphasize the idea of dependence. There is a Latin and literal connection; for the very word dependence only means hanging. It would make vivid the Scriptural text which says that God has hung the world upon nothing. If Saint Francis had seen, in one of his strange dreams, the town of Assisi upside down, it need not have differed in a single detail from itself except in being entirely the other way round. But the point is this: that whereas to the normal eye the large masonry of its walls or the massive foundations of its watchtowers and its high citadel would make it seem safer and more permanent, the moment it was turned over the very same weight would make it seem more helpless and more in peril. It is but a symbol; but it happens to fit the psychological fact. Saint Francis might love his little town as much as before, or more than before; but the nature of the love would be altered even in being increased. He might see and love every tile on the steep roofs or every bird on the battlements; but he would see them all in a new and divine light of eternal danger and dependence. Instead of being merely proud of his strong city because it could not be moved, he would be thankful to God Almighty that it had not been dropped; he would be thankful to God for not dropping the whole cosmos like a vast crystal to be shattered into falling stars." -G.K. Chesterton on St. Francis of Assisi and his conversion to following Jesus.
