I am forever grateful for this beautiful music. For someone like myself who struggles with severe anxiety and depression, and often finds it difficult and sometimes impossible to put my feelings into words, much less actually communicate those feelings with other people, music is always there and no music has ever done what Mumford and Sons has done for me. 3 years ago when I found them they helped me through my first real battle with depression when I thought there was no way I could ever go on living. Next they were there for me all throughout my battle with anorexia in ways that no one else could be. In the times since then that I have been able to say that I was happy, they were there to validate those feelings as well and make the happy times even better. And today, I sat here crying because I couldn't find the strength to finish out my first semester of college. I instantly turned to this song and I have been reminded of a time where I didn't think I could even make it to college in the first place, and the fact that I have proves quite simply that the constant mental warfare taking place in my head is in fact a battle that can be won, and I will win again just as I have multiple times in the past. I guess my point is, this band will always hold a special place in my heart that I can't really put into words. I want to say they have saved my life (multiple times), but in reality they have time and time again given me the strength that I needed to save myself. And that is the greatest gift I could have asked for. Thank you, you wonderful group of human beings.

+Aimee Gerger I've been there and struggled with chronic depression. And I'm long since out of college. A few years ago, I was in a bad way, and there was nothing anyone could say to help. But my best friend, who lives far away, called me and told me to listen to this song, that there was something really special about it. And it was uncommon in that I liked it and "got it" the first time I heard it. I come back to this page to see how others react to it and it's good to see that so many people have had the same reaction to it. But really, I guess it's not so much that I "got it" the first time I heard it, but more that it got me. Good luck to you and thanks for sharing your story. I know this isn't therapy, but still...

I am still trying to find that video but in the process of it, as I’m going through all their music videos, I’m just filled with this warmth in my heart.

Reading these comments I realize exactly how brilliant this song is...1) the individual message it sends about depression, anxiety, and self doubt. And the inspiration this song gives to fight our inner demons... 2) the societal message. How we as a collective are killing ourselves and our earth. And the inspiration that we shouldn't give up on that either. That we will one day collectively decide to do better.

It's empty in the valley of your heart The sun, it rises slowly as you walk Away from all the fears And all the faults you've left behind The harvest left no food for you to eat You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see But I have seen the same I know the shame in your defeat But I will hold on hope And I won't let you choke On the noose around your neck And I will find strength in pain And I will change my ways I'll know my name as it's called again Cause I have other things to fill my time You take what is yours and I'll take mine Now let me at the truth Which will refresh my broken mind So tie me to a post and block my ears I can see widows and orphans through my tears And know my call despite my faults And despite my growing fears But I will hold on hope And I won't let you choke On the noose around your neck And I will find strength in pain And I will change my ways I'll know my name as it's called again So come out of your cave walking on your hands And see the world hanging upside down You can understand dependence When you know the maker's land So make your siren's call And sing all you want I will not hear what you have to say Cause I need freedom now And I need to know how To live my life as it's meant to be And I will hold on hope And I won't let you choke On the noose around your neck And I will find strength in pain And I will change my ways I'll know my name as it's called again

I dedicate this song to my son's bio father. He gave me the greatest gift and one who has not only given me so much happiness but led me on a path that has given me everything I have always dreamed of. Sucks for him that he has chosen not to be apart of it and has chosen to destroy the lives of every women he goes near. My life is better off because of meeting him. I will have everything I ever wanted because I did find strength in my pain and I did change my ways. I feel bad for him because his sirens call falls on deaf ears. I am a better person for what he gave me. Thank you for giving me the life I always dreamed of. It sucks for you that you will never be apart of it.

I left a comment on this video about depression a while ago. I removed it because I don't need the support anymore. I was numb. I spent all my time alone, thinking, hurt. I actually thought I was messed up for good and that I'd never get better. if anyone feels this way; go and explore. No matter who you are you'll find someone who'd be your friend (hopefully more than one person). someone to distract you and someone you care about. Go and explore. There's a whole world of possibilities and you'll never know what they are unless you look.

Mumford and Sons are that one band that you will love if you appreciate REAL music. Now I'm not just saying that because I love them. in saying that because they use REAL instruments. Not computers. They not to mention sound the same live as they do recorded, which these days is a rare trait to find. I wonder why their songs aren't on the radio, but then I realise that's it's because radio stations want to play trendy music not good music. M&S have some of the best out together and sounding songs out there, and I feel that they deserve more recognition then they get. I can jam to them when happy and when sad. You can just always relate to their songs in some way, shape, or form.💕

I hope everyone knows that this is based of the odyssey

I think that's part of, rather than obstructing, why the song is so powerful to so many people. Because I think most people have had their own odyssey, the only question is what chapter they are on.

There's multiple references in here to different things. I'm not sure what the song is about but allusions to some of my favorite shit certainly don't hurt the appeal.

The whole song is not based around the song as there are many other references as well
