The visuals for 2011 are better, but the voice acting and music for 85 wins. Like you have to ENJOY being evil 2011 is too subdued. 85 had that cheesy 80s and 90s gravitas, it's part of the reason the show got remade in the first place

The old one was like an event. It was something you looked forward to seeing when you watched the show. Earl Hammond's recitation of the lines felt like it was ceremonial and the way it kept building and building was something else. It starts with the Mumm-Ra reciting the words, then the wind gusts, making it look he's absorbing the power, and then the bandages fly away to reveal the tattoo/symbol and he grows to full size and gives us that awesome maniacal laugh. Its all perfect. The new one felt like it was done out of obligation. Granted, I REALLY liked the 2011 show and I was super bummed it got cancelled, but this was one case where the old show hit it out of the park and they didn't.

I had never watched, never knew there was a 2011 version. I hate to be the "back in my days" type of guy, but this was extremely disappointing. Makes me wonder if the new theme song is by Justin Beiber or something, whatever was fashionable back in 2011 but that wouldn't be liked by fans of the 80s version.

@@petitio_principiiDon’t be put off. It’s true that this one aspect isn’t as impressive as the original, but the show as a whole is consistently well animated, acted, and written. If you were a fan of the original, and you haven’t looked it up since you posted this, I’d heavily recommend it.

He-Man feel the same way... in the original, Prince Adam activate the sword with "By the power of Greyskull", and the sword transform him into He-Man and finishes with "I have the power" with He-Man's booming voice, while the new one, Prince Adam just say "By the power of greyskull, I have the power" to activate the sword, it ruined the epicness of the transformation... people that try remake the good transformation sequence dont understand what makes the transformation good in the 1st place.. it's the build up that make it epic...

Mumm-ra is not ever living. He died with Earl Hammond. He put so much passion into the voice. As a kid, you sat through Thundercats and waited for this moment. It FEELS powerful, especially when he just rolls his tongue on the word "EVIL." The new version is so inferior, I have to say it sucks. Sorry. I'm 44 years old, so maybe I'm just damn elderly now. But, this was my favorite transformation as a kid. RIP Earl Hammond, and thank you for my memories of coming home from school and sitting in front of the TV.

Nothing beats the 1985 version. We'd all joke about Skeletor growing up in the 80s, same way when TMNT aired Shredder and Krang was a joke of a villain. But not Mumm-Ra. He had a clear presence to him, and a terrifying look, and his voice was AMAZING, fits perfectly with the look. Clearly one of the best 80s cartoon villains of all time. Just the entire lore behind him is clearly awesome, the black pyramid with four obelisks, his mummified body with red eyes and a red cape and than comes that chant, its to this day juts bad ass.

Megatron (and later, Galvatron) received his fare share of love, including but not limited to the original version. They can remake until the cows come home, but NO ONE will ever be able to trump Earl Hammond's Mumm-Ra. Those guttural sounds he produced sounded authentically ancient, worn, & evil--he embodied that character to the point where [Earl's] Mumm-Ra has gone down in history as one of the best villains in animation...ever. It never sounded like an act no matter how over-the-top the laughing, etc. That was the power of that man's voice (and the topnotch animation helped too!) The 2011 version just sounds like a young guy doing his best fanboy impression.

Yeah, no. The '80s form is so much better for so many reasons. 1. Dramatic weight. - Something ominous is about to happen, you can feel it. 2. Dread. - You don't want to be there by the time he's done. 3. Actual horror. - The statues. The eyes. The dessicated form. The raspy voice. The "new" version lacks all of these. For me the best ever original transformation of the first and I think best Mumm-Ra 1985, happened in the episode where he was the fake Pumma. He was revealed as Mumm-Ra in a fantastic great emotional showmanship way. The first time I saw it, it just blew me completely away. The actor had a full powerful transformation with such emotional lines like, " It is you who have disturbed my rest ! " Maybe that's why my old friends said I have always been a villain at heart, LOL. It's just because back then, when there was well written and well acted villians , they made the hero's all the more better.

Not that I dislike the classic, (far from it) I would like to give some credit to the 2011 version for what it did right. I think the voice work was well done to give a different feeling. You progressively hear the raspy and whithered voice grow in strength and volume, revealing that there's a well of power that had gone untapped and is about to be unleashed. With his body hidden in shadow, suddenly there's a flash of evil magic, and a MONSTER comes out of the smoke where a decrepit old man once stood. The final roar just solidifies that a demon has been released to rend you asunder. It may not measure up to a classic, but it's not without its merits.

The remake deserves so much credit. It did so much right for a retelling, and honestly more remakes should follow its trend. Respect the old but make it yours. There is no sense doing a 1 to 1 because you will never surpass what was done right the first time. But going too different leaves you will the feel that why not just make a completely new IP and just leave the series alone. Things this series did right: Mumm-Ra was less of a jobber and more of a real threat; Snarf being just an animal is far better than "Snarf snarf, I'm a cowardly nursemaid, snarf snarf"; for the first time ever the Mutants felt like a competent threat while still retaining semblances of their old self; the other Mutants finally have actual names and aren't just Monkian the Monkian, which was always stupid; the slow build up to Mumm-Ra the Ever Living was brilliant and well executed; Grune is an actual character for once with actual purpose; the Berbils felt less annoying (to me anyway); Panthro's arc was just great; the kids felt more like useful characters while still being kids and far less annoying than the first; the world building was much stronger...I could keep going on. While I grew up with the OG and will always have a soft spot for it, the remake is solid. Like DuckTales, this is how you reboot a series and I'd kill for Thundercats to get the same treatment in the toy department that the TMNT get. Not just more toys of the og but perhaps some of the remake occasionally.

The background music, Mumm-Ra and Mumm-Ra scream made the 1985 rendition awesome to see this frail creepy mummy transform into huge demonic Mumm-Ra the ever living.
@paradigmbrodsky9 жыл бұрын
The 80s one had the statues which have Egyptian allusions, and it's more horrific. My 4 year old hides under the covers every time. The 2011 version doesn't have that effect. Mumm-ra looks like he is on steroids and still isn't as scary. The 80 one was far better.
@TheProverbialHater9 жыл бұрын
Clearly no showman ship in the 2nd one... Nothing better than the original. The first one goes through the whole magic trick. The 2nd one is made for kids because they mostly have ADHD. Just talking and boom transform.

As an 80's kid, I feel they got at least one thing right with the transformation. In the original, he's already transformed before he even finishes his little phrase. This always bugged me. It has the same feeling as some clown speaking in third person, at that point. I'll agree on the showmanship thing, though. It really should've had a full-blown sequence. At least for that first appearance.
@nepenthes19789 жыл бұрын
Ryuu Bateson i never thot he needed to finish the whole thing.. i felt that was like an incantation, one so powerfull it begun to work the moment he said the word "transform".. I go with the orignal one.. FAR more terrifying imo

They later show how he transforms.

In 1985, you actually saw the Ancient Spirits of Evil as part of an unholy ritual. In 2011, Mumm-Ra is like, "Abracadabra, I'm now BADASS! Mwahahaha!"

Earl Hammond really kicked it, but Downes really instensified it!
@bowserbreaker2515 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I definitely prefer Downes.
@thealienwatcher540 Жыл бұрын
@@bowserbreaker2515The old one was like an event. More dramatic and menacing like something you might hear on a Nile album. Its all perfect. The 2011 version of Mumm-Ra still has a great voice, sounds pretty kickass, a proper intergalactic warlord voice but is a lot more darker and seems more powerful. It took a style over substance approach. Sure it's got better animation and effects but it's still just an imitation. It’s like it was done out of obligation. Granted, I REALLY liked the 2011 show and I was super bummed it got cancelled
@bowserbreaker2515 Жыл бұрын
@@thealienwatcher540 That's fair. I just prefer 2011. I still thought it felt like an event. In the premiere he's about to transform, but then he's stopped so it's a big deal when it does happen.

Not even close! 1985 version, the one, first and classic version is the best. The voice of mumm-ra, the animation ( even old, much more epic ) and the resolt ( in 2011 the Ever-Living is like a Chinese robot) are of course the greatest

The 1985 version is the best.... When builds up the drama and reaction, you are already terrified or hooked. Sheer terror when Mumm-Ra's decayed body transforms into "the ever living".... Please get out of the way, the super natural is alive. You have to STOP him immediately... 🤕🇺🇸

I also grew up in the 80's and was a huge fan of the original but now i watch it and it so cheeze. I still like it but the remake is also enjoyable
@kemanorel31106 жыл бұрын
What's great about this remake is it retained the core of the original without outright copying it. Granted, even if it did copy the original outright, people would have still complained, but fact is this was an immensely faithful remake while still having an identity of its own. Can't believe they canceled it, and now have the nerve to give us this ThunderCats Roar garbage.

The 2011 Mumm-Ra's voice is all wrong; it's weak, thin, and sounds like a 20-something trying to re-interpret what he thinks the character should "actually" sound like... it's one of the top three things that made me check out from further viewing. The old Mumm-Ra had vocal flair, gravitas, and an almost tangible menace. You can't even compare the two.

The original Mum'ra is a colossus. In less than 5 seconds you know and feel he's gonna be evil, scary, intimidating, charismatic and powerful. Most of all though he's got presence. The new one has none of these things. A live action Mum'ra done right would be terrifying.
