It may but what can be done to mitigate this is breed out again after the first generation of parent to offspring breeding to gain another generation of hets for albino to increase the pool of albino breeders( even if they are just carriers of the gene) but with greater genetic diversity. Eventually with continued outbreeding then inbreeding you get decent genetic diversity with the albino genes present amongst the pool of breeders
@kayleeforster81215 жыл бұрын
Line breeding isnt the worst thing in the world, especially when it comes to fish. Its just doing it for generations and generations that cause common and extreme defects. Breeding back to the mother is actually more genetically diverse than having two from the same batch
@thevintagebookwolf49535 жыл бұрын
You can line breed for around 3 or 4 generations back to back before the dna of the animals becomes far to similar therefore the animals will start collecting poor genetic code making them more squashed. It's the same with people the first 4 generations with no new genetic code with be genetically sound and after that there's too much over lap and it causes problems. It's why people can make children with their cousins and they aren't technically by genetic terms inbred there's just enough new code to create a brand new human being with no issues.
@MinecraftMick5 жыл бұрын
@@thevintagebookwolf4953 Well I don't see why your argument with the cousins is in any way proving your statement with the 4 generation thing. If you breed brother and sister, then there is a risk of that second generation to become "dysfunctional". If you would inbreed that 2. generation, hell you would be very likely to get disformed humans out of it. Breeding between cousins and breeding 4 generations between sister/brother are two different things. The coefficient of relation of brother and sister is 1/2 (50%) and among cousins it is 1/8 (12,5%) You are basically saying 1 = 0 that's why ∞ - 0 = ∞ -1. It does not really work that way. Btw. Maybe it works with fish, but keep in mind that the life cycle of a human being is far longer than that of a sting ray. A longer life cycle means more time for radiation and toxins to play around with your genes and make them mutate. On top of that, humans have tricked natural selection which results in us having more diseases like diabetes, cancer or some autoimmune diseases. Most of these conditions have a genetical component to them and can be inherited. However, I doubt that there are no negative consequences for fish too. However, you can "outbreed" those defects in later generations.

I know NOTHING about sting rays but I have a couple of questions. 1. Do these "albino" rays have the albinism gene? 2. Given that Albinism does indeed cause problems with any living entity, do you think mummified fetuses could be a complication due to albinism? Like I said, I know nothing about aquatic animals however, I am a "farm wife" who has seen many odd things in a number of species over the years. Even wildlife, true albino's have a myriad of problems. Just curious!
@debbiefox68465 жыл бұрын
Yes I think you a very correct in your thinking. Albinism is a cause of premature death in animals as far as longevity and still births. Then line breeding/ (in-breeding) which i am highly not in favor of ( for health reasons) adds a whole other level of risk and complications. See these issues all the time in reptiles, dogs, cats as well.
@megasocky5 жыл бұрын
Inbreeding is meant mostly for a controlled gene pool but it does def cause complications. Breeders do it frequently if they want specific traits but dont have another source to breed with thats reliable
@pauledwards56075 жыл бұрын
@@megasocky No...it CAN cause or be a problem. It's not necessarily a problem. In many animals, most in fact inbreeding is a bad thing, but in others it's not. You can also, once you have the gene established, which is the important thing, you can always outbreed them back to wild caught or different strains of the same species. Outbreeding adding vigor. Albino rats and mice can breed many generations with no problems. In this case, he has no choice...he HAS to breed the het males back to the albino female...there is no other way to do it, because that is a one of a kind albino stingray.

Every species began with inbreeding, it's only after a couple of gens it starts to get nasty.
@AaaaNinja5 жыл бұрын
@@TheFakeyCakeMaker OMG no it doesn't. A whole population of animals that become isolated can create a new species, new species doesn't begin with inbreeding. 1,000 animals isolated from the rest of their species by a geologic event that cuts them off such as a landslide. Over time mutations in their genetics accumulate and propagate throughout that population and there are enough individuals and genetic diversity that inbreeding doesn't occur. Those mutations don't wind up in the original species, only the isolated population.... because they are cut off from the rest of the world. Enough genetic drift over time results in a new species.
@MuFu235 жыл бұрын
Inbreeding can be detrimental, but it's usually not as bad for most animals as it is for humans. It all has to do with the amount of harmful recessive genes being carried by the parents. I've had mice that did nothing but inbreed for generations, and the vast majority of them ended up healthy even 2-3 generations in.
@TheFakeyCakeMaker5 жыл бұрын
@@AaaaNinja It's almost as though I gave an overly simplified answer because this is KZbin not Science Con. Also every species did at one point start with inbreeding because erm...numbers. Scientists recognise that humans and animals share one common ancestor. If all humans share a common ancestor then inbreeding happened at some point. Sheesh, it's not difficult to understand.

The inbreed would pass on the albino gene, but isn't there a risk birth defects?
@Sasha-up9er5 жыл бұрын
If you don't do it too many times, inbreeding is generally harmless. The problem with inbreeding is that it greatly increases the chance that a mutated gene will appear because it won't be overpowered by a healthy gene (the baby would have two alleles, but the more inbreeding the more likely you are to get two of the mutated alleles which will be expressed). This can result in all kinds of health issues, from birth defects, genetic diseases, etc. That's how I understand it anyway, I'm not a biologist so I could be wrong.

Know nothing about stingrays other than it's a fish. Reading thru the comments there's a lot, I mean, a lot of concern about the future plan to inbred either "mom x son or brother to sister". One thing people are misinterpreting is that these aren't mammals, in mammals there's a greater chance to develop genetic problems when inbreeding occurs. In fish and other animal species, at least in some fish species you can inbreed up to F4 without a issue. Beautiful rays by the way.
