We Gave a BUTTERFLY a NEW WING!!!

We've been raising and releasing monarch butterflies all throughout Summer and Fall. When we checked our butterfly tent this morning, we discovered that one of our butterflies emerged with a damaged wing. We really wanted to help this butterfly and give it a chance at flying, so we performed a wing replacement surgery to repair its broken wing!!! We love helping wildlife when we can. @@fribiesdi I get what you're saying. And yea we do need to be careful and resonsible about where we release creatures. (But you don't know where they live exactly. The butterflies might be native to that area. So you shouldn't assume) But that shouldn't mean we should neglect our enviroment, even the butterflies. It's going to be hard to save the humans in need when the ecosystem is collapsing around us (Which is kind of already is). And like all creatures, they are important to the very ecosystem that we ourselves need, to survive, in order to help other humans who are on the streets starving. Also Monarch butterflies are actually on the endagered species list. Helping this one will add to the population if it survives to breed, and even one individual is important when a species is endagered.

If we were talking about a great polinator that could save the world I would reconsider what you've said... Raise and release bees and wasps if you really like the planet (even that could be a disaster without environmental planning). Always remember that a critter will always be eaten by another critter. It's not only about butterflies, it's about a whole ecosystem. They are for sure messing up with the population of butterflies' predators, which messes with the population of the predators' predators and so on. *In other words, they are accelerating the extinction of these butterflies instead of helping them.*

Thank you for helping the Monarch population, these are beautiful little creatures. We are down in Fla have also raised about 200 Monarchs by growing plenty of milkweed in our yard and raising inside to protect them. We had a poor little guy who had slight wing damage to 3 wings and were getting ready to transplant just like you did. My wife had been giving him sugar water because he couldn't get off the ground and the day we were going to do it he lifted right off and flew like crazy.

Everyone things I’m crazy for sparing insect life and going out of my way and over any fears I may get, to try and help them. This reminds me of a specific time when I found a small beetle stuck to duck tape while finishing work. I had to be very careful with its other limbs, antennas and back could easily catch into the tape as well. And sense I was told growing up they breath through the pores all over, I was afraid to clog any- but given not much choice, while trying to use the smallest amount and the most precise area of the only thing I could to unstick him alive and all limbs and antennas intact, which was Mayo. This is strong duck tape. It unstuck his legs, antenna and the portion of his back successfully. I was so relieved! If you know something better I could use just in case in the future, please tell me. But if you’re SUPER gentle, careful and small amount/ precise, and don’t know what to use either, this did save him! It did take me probably almost half an hour, but this is sense I was trying to be very very careful, due to how thin his legs where, and the duck tape could still get caught on his other legs and the rest of him. Everything worked out and he crawled away into some leaves outside when I was done. My sibling thought I was weird, but it was so worth it to me. You guys are amazing! Also, do you guys get weird looks and comments too when you save spiders and ants? And what do you say to them? I always tell them it’s a life to, and how would you like it if a giant smashed you, lol. I’ve been a shield and kind hands to safely for any insects.

My first year at university, I was a biology major. One of our projects involved fly experiments. We had this stuff called FlyNap which would knock out the flies so we could count and observe them. They'd be knocked out for a few minutes, then when we were done, we put them back and they woke up and started flying around again.

@Macdonalds Mascot Just because it had a messed up wing, doesn't always mean it's because of "weak genes". There's other reasons it could have happened. Same with babies in the womb. Sometimes it can be something passed down, but sometimes it just happens. I had a family member that had a baby that was born without her hand. Her cord got wrapped around her wrist, and cut off blood flow to it. Obviously butterflies don't have umbilical cords like babies do, but maybe the way it was laying didn't give the wing enough room to grow and cut of circulation which caused it to die and fall off. Or you could be right. Just saying that's not ALWAYS the case, that's all 😊.
