What a wonderfully pleasant surprise it was discovering this band today. I'm an 80s teen and this is the kind of sound I grew up listening to. Already gone down the MUNA rabbit hole. Their self-titled album is absolute gold and has been the only thing on repeat today.

I can’t adequately express how refreshing it is to hear a current-day singer who doesn’t sing in cursive or baby voice. I was starting to give up hope that they even still existed…
@IkeOzurumba Жыл бұрын
Dude I complain about this constantly! I thought it was called vowel breaking. But yes totally. It's like 90% of vocals now. Drives me nuts
@differentbutsimilar7893 Жыл бұрын
In itself it isn't the worst thing in the world. For some singers, for what they are shooting for, it's exactly the tool for the job. I don't even mind the baby voice, again... as long as it really justifies itself as part of a greater whole that is giving me more than JUST the sense of a particular style for which that singing is well-suited. That's not enough. It sounds nice for a while and then it pops up a few more times and you feel hollow. I feel the same way about autotune. The problem is the over-saturation, there's a thick glaze of vocalists using both methods, (sometimes simultaneously,) to mask a lack of vocal skill. These are means to hitting certain checkboxes in the sonics that will make it work for a lot of people. You get something that's arguably better as a product, but for the same reasons reduced as a creative experience. Sometimes it's nice to hear some tactful change of breath control and just... dynamics in resonance that really get lost to the cursive inflection. I really never thought of it like autotune before this, but it's the same sterilizing of pitch presentation, just through a completely different avenue. It's like... are you glossing up fine wood? Or glazing over sloppy work? I think when you go to hard on one style or method, you kind of homogenize the expression. Vocal performances can tell a story outside of the words being sung, but being overly dependent on any one style or approach limits how many ways you can tell those kinds of stories. Sonic-heavy styles suffer the most for this. Whereas what we have here is nothing without the performance itself, and that is something that translates easily to other styles. Try taking the baby singing outside of its own context. Does it still work? Again, it's a question of how the vocal declares itself, what its stated existence is. There's a fine line between what is a tool that takes you further, and a what is becoming and parasitic prerequisite that anchors you in place.

To my great shame, I had never heard of that group before today. I have just finished reading Harry Styles The making of a modern man by Sean Smith where this group is mentionned . "Harry s opening act in San Francisco, throughout North America and onto Europe was that band". I have been obsessed about this song for the last hour. An instant love. Amazing music. 80s feeling/ country music. I need to listen to their other songs. Never late than never......:)
