You don't need it, if you don't print labels. I print tons of labels and that is why I have two.

Most people only need a stationary printer (or none at all) but, if for any reason you are a professional who needs to carry a printer in a bag, this kind of device is your only option.

Thermal paper prints typically fade within a few months. Is that an issue with this device?

I use thermal paper on all my labels and we prints hundreds a week. I have never had an issue with it, but I can't say that it wouldn't.

Curiosity, why have one? What is the benefit to it. The paper seems thin, prints only in black and white, have to have special papers. Confusion on why it may be needed.

You don't need one unless you print lots of labels. I print hundreds of labels, that is why I have two. But if you don't print labels then you don't need it.

You can carry it in your bag. This is the only benefit, and a crucial one for those who need this.

Also you never need to buy/load ink and the labels are normal thickness. however I have no idea how to print 4×6 labels it only does it by the roll and I think the fact that the video doesn't show her loading the 4×6 paper was intentional because it doesn't do it right and she didn't want to show that. Kind of misleading.
