If you do a Chef's Night Out in Chicago and don't take a shot of Malört, were you even in Chicago? We head out for an epic evening with the duo behind Logan Square's Fat Rice, Abe Conlon and Adrienne Lo. The night begins at a Logan Square classic, Lula Cafe. After three courses of Chef Jason Hammel's delicious farm-to-table food, the crew visits Café Marie-Jeanne for porron waterfalls and duck fat frites.
Then it's off to Rose's Lounge, the ultimate Chicago dive-bar, for Old-Style in frosted mugs and shots of Malört and Slivovitz. The night ends back at Fat Rice with pork chop sandwiches, oyster "omelettes,” "poor man's sushi”... and more shots of Malört.

This chef is legit. I was lucky enough to work under him in one of his summer programs during high school. All this hate in the comments saying "hipster" chef as if it demeans his work. Go taste his food, bet it blows your mind.

People are calling this guy a "hipster"? lol! It's funny everyone's definition of a hipster is different depending on your perspective! Come to Portland. I'll show you some fucking hipsters.

'hipster' just means anyone who doesn't make burgers or pizza or any other basic fast food shit, and incorporates other cultures into their cooking.

@@BassssicBasssssssss i feel like the problem is these type of people who are of this ilk always complain about cultural appropriation then are the biggest offenders of it. It's always these super hipster type guys who make Japanese and Chinese and Vietnamese and any other Asian type food and have maybe been to the countries a month total. Like at least live there a year then you aren't a hipster for cooking the food. you don't know shit about it if you stay there a month. But dw, they will complain about "cultural appropriation" of other shit

Amazing thing about dining is that you can have two vastly different mind-blowing experiences I remember tasting the Dover Sole amongst other dishes at 11 Madison as part of set menu one of the most expensive meals I've ever ate that blew my mind and I also remember eating tacos Al Pastor in Mexico City for tacos for 20 pesos and I still dream about those tacos. I must have ate about 20 of them.

As a Portuguese American man, I love seeing any version of our cuisine being highlighted because in the states unless your in San Jose, CA or the various places in Mass you just dont see it often. I got way to stoked off of the Sardines at the end.

I know this episode was focused mainly on Abe but I felt that this video should've captured more of the relationship and chemistry between both Abe and Adrienne specifically since they ended up working together but also ended up building this business "Fat Rice". Of course I know it was Abe's motivation to start this gig but to acknowledge Adrienne's interest to join along his journey and to hear from it would've been more admirable and enjoyable.

Yo that's Hao Jian at 15:18! Egg, starchy stuff and oysters stir-fried with lard; super unhealthy but oh so wonderful after a long night out. I thought the dude was a little hipster at first, but it's one of those things that you can only try to cook if you've had it and he does a pretty close rendition from what I see. Nice to see some of my hawker favourites being made halfway across the world.
