I'm a leopard gecko breeder and have been for 16 years, and as much as I love moss I would like to point out that it CAN cause impaction (at least in reptiles). I have seen them vomit moss, and I have had to pull big pieces of moss out of there butts. It's not fun, and that's why I don't use moss anymore in my hides for them. It is natural, but it cannot always be digested. I know this is an issue for reptiles, but I am not sure if it is for hamsters? Just thought I'd point that out!

Hello, I just adopted a new little fur baby (winter white hybrid) she is approximately around 9-10 weeks old her name is Luna. We have had her for about 2 weeks now. She is our 1st hamster my daughter just turned 10 (inspiring veterinarian) and it was the only thing she had consistently requested for a solid year (after religiously watching your channel lol). She started to request one last year but I was worried that she wasn’t old enough for the responsibility yet or if the excitement of a small pet would fade quickly after the initial excitement phase. She is head over heals in love with this little girl (she kinda has me wrapped around her little paw as well) The reason for reaching out though is I still have a few questions how to appropriately care for her as well as some behavioral questions/concerns. 1. I unfortunately purchased a cage that I thought was large enough (you reviewed it though and said it wasn’t.) it’s a 2 layer cage with a light blue base. It was one of the Amazon recommended cages and in a video of the same title. was thinking about a bin cage (thought it would be a good project for both my daughter and me to do together) the problem is we have large dogs. I need something that is almost guaranteed to be escape proof. The cage is in her bedroom with a baby gate as additional security it might not keep her in during an escape but keeps the boys out so they do not stress her out. (Recommendation for secure cages) 2. I have gotten her all kinds of different chews with various textures but she has not touched anything. I’m worried about her teeth not getting the appropriate care if I can’t get her to chew on stuff. I even got the alligator guy that I keep seeing mentioned everywhere lol. She moved him into her hide but has not chewed on it. Any recommendations for chewing toys that seem to be a hit with finicky hamsters? 3. Food: I have her on a hamster pellet (oxbow I think it’s called.) it’s what she was eating when we got her. I was worried about switching food. I’m also adding a flower and herb mix as well as Timothy hay and mullet sprigs. She is picking on the mullet (seems to love it) but I can’t get her to eat much of her actual food. Every once in a while I see her eat some of the herbs/flowers but her appetite is slightly concerning to me. When should I worry or do to increase her desire to eat? 4. Energy. For being such a young little hamster, I really thought she would be more energetic, she will wake up around 1am run on wheel (the medium blue flying saucer) for about 30 mins and then back to bed. I’ve added all kinds of toys chews climbing stuff and hammocks for her to play with. She goes from her burrow to the wheel to her hid on the top layer of cage. Is this normal behavior for such a young hamster? 5. Bonding: We have been trying to take this one slow. I don’t want to stress her out. We have taken her out of her cage 1 time so far and it seemed to me like she was in distress the whole time she was out. She will allow us to place our hands in her cage and if she is up she will approach and give you sniffs or a gentle nibble. My big accomplishment was her crawling into my hand yesterday when I was trying to spot clean her cage. She will also come to the side of the cage when she is awake when she hears mine or my daughters voice to check us out. Any recommendations for helping her to relax when outside of the cage I would love for her to get floor time especially since I have discovered her enclosure is a little on the small side (working on getting her an upgrade see above question #1) Anything else that you can think of that a brand new hammie owner should know would be appreciated. I know this is kind of long but I do want to ensure that this baby has a great life with us. I admit that we are learning as we go, I never realized that hamsters were such complicated and complex little creatures. But she has wiggled herself into our hearts and we are trying to correct mistakes made and prevent more from happening.

Are the following DIY hamster toys/treats safe? 1 toilet paper rolls/cardboard stuff in general 2 sticks as chew toys (what kind of wood is best) 3 black walnuts found in the backyard (when they are in season not the rotten ones we have now) 4 acorns 5 carrots 6 strawberries from the garden 7 what type of cleaning products are safe to use on cages

I've tried twice to give my Syrian hamster a sand pit, but each time, he loves to dive in but then he gets very sneezy and his eyes look kind of irritated. I switched to cork flakes which he seems to like, but I'm wondering if there's something better. FYI, I use Reptisand sand, and my Dwarf (in his own separate cage) is fine with it. I'm hesitant on Coco-fiber if it's a dust issue. Is the a particular cork granule that you suggest? The flacks are nice but once they are wet on, they blob together and become very hard to clean.
