Mungyo watercolor is also sold under the Sargent brand. However it is the totally identical paint and box with the same background on the box. But the Sargent brand is 4 to 5 times more expensive. In Germany Mungyo is sold by the Honsell art compny brand and those are alo used in art school besides Schminke brand.

Literally just bought this set. Really nice for how cheap it is.

The color mixing chart is such a good idea, that should be a top thing to see when deciding what watercolors to buy. I love this review :)
@tarias_sketchy_adventures3 жыл бұрын
I think so too - I think its also such a good exercise to learn which colours in your set produce which results. It's something I will always do now...if I get a new set any time soon!

I cut the little color chart off the box and put that in the middle. I use the white and the black all the time … why limit myself to other people’s personal preferences? I find, once dried in 2 layers, Mungyo paints resembles a look of magic marker. That could just be me tho’.

i read your blog entry about this watercolor as well as watched this video. i really like how much information you put there about the set and the review :) as you said, unfortunately there isnt much of an imposed standart of what is an actual professional grade paint, companies can claim what they want to claim and its up to clients to buy them and test and compare against other brands. Even if mungyo claims to be professional, i would say they are more suited for student grade - or rather crafter grade, if it existed :P I personally think what constitutes as professional grade paints would be: correct names (using the correct denomination as 'hues' for any color that is a substitution of another one, like cobalt hue for using PB29 instead of genuine cobalt that uses PB28), not a lot filler/optical brighteners, easy rewetability and good pigment load.

Hi Maddy, thanks so much - I completely agree these are more student/craft grade. It's a shame they label them professional when they are certainly not. It also makes me feel uneasy about other brands I have not heard of are marketed as such. I think your criteria for ascertaining whether paints are professional or not is bang on! I shall adopt your suggestion on this :)

Can you do a comparison video between these and Winsor and Newton Cotman watercolors?

Bit of sellotape all around to “laminate” the swatch in the middle of your set might work for a while too 🤗

Can more pans fit in the middle space? Is the size of the pans the same as other normal pans like Van Gogh's? I want to change some pans and add others to complete the set, as I miss some colors.

Thanks for the review. One question: When you opened those colour pans, it had a very grainy texture, does it reappear after the first use? I am just worried about that...
@tarias_sketchy_adventures4 жыл бұрын
No it seems to go away after you’ve used them a bit. That’s why doing the mixing chart is good as it takes that first layer of texture away and now they seem pretty smooth

Thank you for review! I really like their box, can you put and if so how many full pans from white nights or it is not going to fit there? On their website all empty boxes they offer they say both half and full ones will fit.. So I just wondered if you could please help me with that?? Thank you!!
@tarias_sketchy_adventures3 жыл бұрын
Hi Anastazia! Yes you can fit half pans and also full pans in this box. In fact it is almost exactly the same tin as I have my white night full pans in. If you remove the metal tray in the middle, you can fill the tin with full pans. I have 14 full pans wedged into my tin! I just put blu-tack on the bottom of the pan and push down so it stays in the tin. It is a squeeze so the pans will stay in well, mine have never fallen out. You could also fit a combination of full and half pans if you wish - it is just a case of playing 'Tetris' and seeing how many you can fit!

Thank you so much for the review. I want to buy my very first 12 shades watercolor pan set for urban sketching and searching for the best option. Does this Mungyo set have all the necessary primaries and secondary colours? Like personally I find sap green, prussian blue, burnt sienna and payne's grey more useful than the shades provided here. So is this the right set in that regard or are the Prima ones better? The Prima sets have such different shade selections it gets confusing. Sennelier is best but way out of my budget lol.
@tarias_sketchy_adventures4 жыл бұрын
The Mungyo set it ok...but personally I would spend just a little bit more money and go for something like St Petersburg White Nights watercolours. I really do believe they are probably the best paints you can get for an affordable price (and they are artist grade which is a bonus). Mungyo are definitely not artist grade. I have not directly compared to Primatek myself BUT I am told they are basically exactly the same paints. Primatek just have a wide range of different sets with different colours as you say. I firmly believe they are good for those who like crafting. If you are keen to get into watercolour sketching or more traditional watercolours I would recommend White Nights, or Winsor and Newton, or some sets by Royal Talens are good. I actually have a whole blog post on watercolour sets which may help: urbansketchingworld.com/best-watercolour-sets-for-urban-sketching/ Schmincke, Sennelier, Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton Professional are all excellent choices but as you say, much more expensive. If you have any questions at all just let me know, I'm very happy to help! :)

I don't wanna be meany but before mungyo sell paint case separately we south korean artists said "just hurl out paint and use box for other half pan" . they are just not that good. Too chalky for art work
@tarias_sketchy_adventures3 жыл бұрын
Yeh fair comment - I was surprised that I found them totally adequate for sketchbook work though. I think they produced nice results each time I used them. So probably for urban sketching and just chucking them in your bag to roam around then I think they are ok. But agree I certainly would not recommend them for serious or professional use
