In this video we are going to explore what happens when you mix all 3 primaries together, the colours we can achieve and what that looks like when you apply it to a painting.
Once more I am using the Daniel Smith Essentials set (link below). If you have not seen the previous video where I make a watercolour remixing chart with this set, check it out here: • The BEST Way To Get To...

I’m amazed by your gable /roofline colors made from two reds, two yellow, and two blues! I now have this set, and with your kind toutlage, I’m off to learn! And grab a quinacridone coral painter pinafore

This was super helpful!! I've been looking at this set for quite a while now but I was so intimidated by all the vibrant/bright colours. I like muted/earthy colours so I'm so glad i will be able to mix some. I haven't seen any other reviewer show what kind of browns you can mix with this set so I'm finally at peace now haha. Thank you! 🙏

So, I finally did a chart mixing all my primaries after your last informative video. Yay! It was fun and super informative, plus I have the permanent record with my annotations. Win! I'll be doing far more triad mixing in future to establish which colours I do not need to buy in future, as well as the usefulness for limited urban sketching palettes (yes, I'll probably make a few depending on destination and intended subjects/landscapes/seasonal botanicals). For me, understanding colour mixing serves three purposes: first it stops me buying convenient colours that are not essential so saving £££; second, it's just pure fun learning, mixing, and sometimes being pleasantly surprised by the hue variations; thirdly, and possibly most important (other than values), is colour harmony. I've learned colour harmony the hard way after many muddy or frankly ugly colour scheme combination beginnings! I have bought Daniel Smith Buff Titanium and Goethite (on Jane Blundell's recommendation) and they work a dream together. Probably the only convenience colours, other than the two pigment W&N Sap Green, that I really love. One wash of combined Goethite and Buff Titanium for sand, sun-baked rocks, with lovely granulation to mimic that sandstone type texture. They are keepers for my urban sketching palette as they mix well with just a teeny addition of another pigment to intensify or neutralise the tone (in my experience so far). Like I say, these granulating paints are beautiful with a simple wash, no faffing, job done... happy days! You so need these two colours, Taria. lol. Oooh, Neptune seaglass. So pretty. I'm intrigued about the purpose of the chiselled end though... does that have a purpose? I've been using flats more too because they're helpful for blocking out far receded background shapes and such. Great to see you're experimenting with the flats and bringing them to our attention... I see me picking up some valuable tips from you in future as you use them more :) Love this follow up. Again, you underscore the reason why it's important to explore with charts and mixes. See how easy it is to make an intense black, that is beautiful and dare I say exciting black, when close inspection shows gradations of pigment and shifts from different hued blacks instead of the convenience flat blacks (hope that made sense, because it took me a long while to learn this important distinction over the last two years I've used watercolours). For me, I think understanding paint properties and their characteristics is just as vital as learning how to make marks on the page with pen, ink or pencil. Colour, when used, is vitally important. You can draw expertly and ruin with crap colour mixing and vice-versa be an expert on colour but ruin a picture with crap drawing structure. Urban sketchers need to learn how to combine the two on the go. I reckon it's harder to create on location because of all the limitations than in the studio when time is of no essence. (Mmmm... maybe a video on things that speed up, rather than hamper, on locations sketching. Or, maybe, sketching on location to pin-point salient aspects like colour, ambience/feelings notations, the focal points, backed up with a photo (I always use my mobile and I'm pretty rubbish... although I've learned that putting your blank white sketchbook behind a close subject like a plant/flower is amazing, I've still got to learn to use my smartphone camera properly), that can then be extended to the studio for more thorough inspection for those special moments that are 'keepers'? Sorry, I always get carried away with brimming ideas after watching your videos :) Between yourself and Jane Blundell I feel I've upped my chances of creating sketches, and art in general, that makes me happy in my soul, enough that I might have the confidence to share them in future (coming from an acute introvert!) Absolutely fab, thumbs up! x

I recently switched to Daniel Smith from Schminke, due mostly for local availability. The essential kit plus some earth tones. I did also add DS Buff Titanium for sand and mixing dirt at the local ball park. Gotta sketch our grandson playing baseball P-). Thanks for giving me some inspiration.

Buff titanium is one of my favourite paints. I use it alllllll the time. But it is a little bit opaque because it is a white pigment. So I think there’s value in mixing the same colour using transparent paints. I appreciate you sharing how to mix that colour that I love in a transparent way.

this is so helpful. i usually mix just two pigments together, and never could figure out how to get that neutral stone color. now i will try mixing 3! (and i feel more motivated to make a new color chart, and a 3-primary mixing chart.) thank you.

hah yes, i got my 'winner', with my Da Vinci watercolors - ultramarine blue/permanent (napthol) red /hansa yellow light. And a close 'second' - ultramarine blue/alizarin crimson/arylide yellow. These are the tan colors i had never come up with before. and, of course, i got a few more interesting neutrals as well. i also did a color chart of greens. now i guess i have to paint some landscapes. :)

This is great! I decided I was going back to basics. Color mixing is something I felt I need more of. I chose this set for my Portable Painter. I have been using it since this last summer. I also decided it was time to up grade my brushed... and I chose Princeton. I bought a travelers set of 4. 🥰 and the 1/2 flat brush you have... 🥰 and loved them all so much I bought 2,4,6,8,10 round in the Aqua elite line. 💙 I do a lot of florals. Trying to learn to paint and sketch buildings...🙄😅

Wonderful video as always, Taria. I really love the color variation in the roof tiles on your painting. Also, the Princeton Neptune brush was my first higher quality watercolor brush and I love it to death. Not very springy, but I actually find that the floppiness adds some great shape variation to my work. I've been using it to paint leaves. And, I think a color like buff titanium would suit you well because the subject matter you often paint has that color involved a lot. I know some painters use potter's pink to mix that kind of sandy beigey color as well, and it granulates!

The first thing that caught my eye when you started painting was the new flat brush! 😆 funny how you called it out too. I thought the original painting looks good. I was using the essential set for a good 5 months before I started to expand my watercolor paints selection. It was the best way to learn color mixing. I find myself a lot lazier now that I have wider selections of colors. I bought a small tube of buff titanium but end up not using it much. There’s too much white in it that makes my painting too pastel for my liking. I’m missing your splish splashy style (eg old prison tower). Craving another sketch using that method 😍

Thanks Taria, colours ordered! What is the spiral pad you're using there if you don't mind, as you probably know the selection from Australia can be a little limited...

I started out with exactly these colors. But later I substituted th ultramarine for a transparent warm blue, because I don't like granulation at the moment.

In the DS LINE they have French Um and Um. The Um does not granulated as much if at all. 🥰

I want to understand this as I love neutrals and earthy colours, but I am a bit confused as to how you got the 3 different neutrals below each colour combination. I understand that you mix the red and yellow together, then add the blue which gives the first neutral, but how do you get the other two neutrals in each set. They look too different just to be a more watered down version of mixing the 3 colours (red, yellow, blue) together. What am I missing? I do hope you can help.
