Mullae-dong a textile mill in the Japanese occupation to ‘Mullae’ reportedly originated in the ‘spinning wheel’, a tool to weave the nomination. In the 1960s, ironworks were formed in this area, and gradually became an iron factory complex. Many of the ironworks in Cheonggyecheon during the 1980s and 1990s were brought to a flourishing stage, once called the largest steel works complex in Seoul.
However, in the early 2000s, it was declared a redevelopment zone, and many factories were evacuated. They are artists who filled the vacancy where the ironworks left off. With artists nesting at low rent prices, it has a new turning point. The policy of the local art hub of Seoul is transforming into an art village.
