MINOR CORRECTIONS: I'm not sure how it's possible, but I've forgotten that Uncle Matt was at the end of Muppets Take Manhattan. So that's technically another example of this happening, but that predated Family Christmas and was really more of a quick cameo. Also I think all three properties did come together for a big celebratory performance some years back but I don't believe it was officially recorded or broadcast.
3 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure it was, as there was a special on ABC called the Muppets 30th Anniversary and that had everything muppet related up to that time on display. There was also a christmas special where many muppet characters from different shows all showed up at Fozzie's mom's house on christmas.

There was also Jim Henson’s Musical World at Carnegie Hall, which included the 3 properties (plus emmet otter!) but it was never officially recorded :( though i do remember there is a muppet blog out there with an audio recording of it

it’s likely due to this being a non commercial memorial short where the 2011 muppet movie was a commercial product. Especially based on the proposed scene it was likely that Sesame workshop wanted to maintain the appearance of Elmo as a young and authentic character rather than one that follows the direction of lawyers which could damage the appearance of the character and make it seem like they are a more calculating character. I think a better scene they could have tried proposing is either use big bird on vacation and have him mention how he made it in public television as a callback to the original muppets movie and that can be the spark that inspired Kermit to save the theater as a reminder of his goal all those years ago or by having the cast of the muppets pass by Sesame Street with Kermit remarking how he used to live there before he met the rest of the muppets crew. Using both as call back to Kermit’s past rather than cameos as Kermit was basically completely fazed out of Sesame Street by the time Elmo had arrived instead being a rare guest character, Kermit had a much stronger connection to the other Sesame Street characters from the early days compared to Elmo, Big Bird would have been best due to them having a closer connection across the years along with the connection to the original movie while also being a super recognizable character.

When I was a kid, an 80's child here, ALL of these were "Muppets". I didn't distinguish between them. They were distinct from the more intentionally simplistic puppets of Mr. Rogers, but too similar to each other for me to see them as anything but "muppets". By that reasoning, I think YOU are a muppet. Maybe not officially, or even honorary, but in how my brain sorts things, you're a muppet to me.

We really need another Muppet movie in that format: where it's the cast playing classic novel characters, but with some 4th wall breakage while playing the story completely straight. It feels like some people behind the scenes forgot the Muppets are *actors* at their core, meaning not everything they do needs to be grounded in reality (even if they would be considered a distinctive race/species ala the Toons during Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) Muppets Most Wanted felt like it wanted to tap into The Great Muppet Caper but it lacks the laid back, almost Vaudeville approach to the world that made the humor feel organic. Then again Steve Martin might as well be a Muppet.

@@stevethepocketmatt worked closely with both carol spinney (big bird, oscar) and jerry nelson (half of basically every muppet production) before both of their passings, and took up many of their characters by their request. its one thing to not like his performance but its another to downplay his experience, especially when it comes to playing legacy characters.

As someone who was inspired to become a puppeteer and make/ design my own puppets due to Jim, this hit me right in the heart gut. Each of these properties molded me as a person in some way, shape and form. Sesame Street gave me my first word. The Rainbow Connection has been my favorite song ever since I was 5. (I’m in my late 30s now.) Fraggle Rock taught me how to look at the simple things in a wondrous new way. Jim Henson is someplace where the best of humanity end up in the end. Rest in peace Jim. My life wouldn’t be what it is without you

Fraggle Rock is forever my crew. It was my childhood in the 80's and I took all of my life lessons from the fraggles. It really hit me recently how much I actually support the fraggle "ethos" as stated in the third to last episode of the series, "We don't have any leaders. We lead ourselves and we all lead each other." The ideas in this show were, in most respects, way ahead of their time.

The fact that the three studios came together to do this is hopefully the beginning of more cooperation in the future. Nice to hear I am not the only one who treasures Muppet Family Christmas. In all fairness though, the muppet family split technically started when a German company briefly bought Henson, but that is another story.

I feel like a part of my heart healed a little just watching that video. If you haven't been knee-deep in Muppets lore you likely didn't understand the sheer magnitude of the accomplishment behind just a short birthday video but it felt like it awakened the child inside me. Also yeah Matt Vogel's Kermit is actually really great, and gets far too much hate. Forgot to mention but the only thing that would've made this better is if Rowlf was there as well, given his role in the beginning of Jim Henson's climb plus how everyone said Rowlf was most similar to Jim's personality.

There's a KZbinr named Matt Baume, whose content is mostly about queer milestones in pop culture history, and he has an excellent episode on Richard Hunt, one of the most important behind-the-scenes Muppet performers. The episode not only talks about Richard's contribution, but also gives a decent summary of the history of the major Henson productions. It also has a piece on a very touching and sad Fraggle Rock episode that was a reflection on loss, largely inspired by the escalating AIDS crisis.
