"I thought pirates had talking parrots as pets." "Talking... parrots?" "What an imagination. First pirates, now talking parrots, what's next - a singing, dancing mouse with his own amusement park?" Fun Fact: Tim Curry had been a huge fan of the Muppets for years before doing this movie. He has stated in many interviews that he regards Captain Long John Silver as one of his favorite roles. Tim Curry was given a Muppet made in the likeness of him as Long John Silver after shooting was completed. Like A Baby Fact: Producer and director Brian Henson was nervous that the whole cast and crew would get motion sick as the ship rolled on the gimbals. He gave everyone seasickness pills for the first day of the shoot and not only did the cast and crew not get seasick, but they almost fell asleep on the job. Wonderful Oz Fact: Frank Oz was reportedly not originally a fan of Fozzie Bear's "Mr. Bimble" (the man who lived inside of Fozzie's finger). However, by the end of filming, Oz decided that it was one of his favorite jokes. Frank Oz was unable to perform and puppeteer his signature characters of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Sam the Eagle since he was busy directing Bowfinger (1999). Kevin Clash took over principle puppeteering duties during shooting and Oz re-recorded the characters' voices in post-production. Oz had already participated in a recorded read-through of the script and Clash used these recordings to help prompt his performances. According to Clash, Oz gave him a brief description of each of his characters prior to shooting. Oz described Miss Piggy as "a truck driver wanting to be a woman" and Fozzie Bear as somebody similar to Jerry Lewis.

My only problem with this amazing film is that when Miss Piggy says "Hello, Loooong John" she manages, by tone and inflection alone, to make you 100% certain that he didn't get that nickname because he was tall. And you will never, ever, be able to get that knowledge out of your head.

A stealth joke that took me DECADES to catch: Dead Tom was, indeed... always dead. He wasn't even a muppet. During the roll call scene, he was being held up from behind and ventriloquist dummied by the pirate behind him. You can see the pirate behind him's mouth move when 'Dead Tom' is speaking. He was, the whole time, just a regular dusty entirely nonalive skeleton. The thing that really makes it ludicrously funny is the pirate doing the corpse ventriloquy act with Dead Tom... is the same pirate who was sobbing over his body after Long John shottim. Despite _literally being the one puppeteering Dead Tom_ he somehow _still_ had no idea Dead Tom had been dead all along. And a further layer to the absurdity and hilarity is that Dead Tom was a puppet being operated by a puppet.

In the opening song, there is a line that says, 'every man aboard would'a killed his mate for a bag of ginnies or a piece of eight.' Out of curiosity I looked up the buying power of a piece of eight, which was a 1/8th of a Spanish silver dollar (back then coins could literally be cut into up to 8 pieces, a 1/8th being the smallest piece accepted as money). In the late 16 hundreds, a piece of eight was worth a little less than 13 US dollars in today's money. Meaning they'd kill one of their own for a little over ten bucks.

5:20 - Jim Hawkins was not an orphan in the original story. He lived with his mother at the Admiral Benbow, which was their family inn. I guess in this film they thought being an orphan would make Jim more sympathetic. 11:36 - Hispaniola. 16:44 - Sweetums is my favorite muppet. 19:34 - This joke probably went over most people's heads. What Gonzo just described is what is known as 'keelhauling.' It was an extremely deadly punishment aboard ships. 24:04 - It's pretty obvious which scenes in this movie come directly from the book. This scene is one of the most faithfully reproduced. It's from the chapter named "What I Heard From the Apple Barrel." 29:08 - There were no natives in the original story. Piggy's role was originally a male named (big surprise) Benjamin Gunn. His story was pretty much the same and it was HIS boat Jim used to sneak back aboard the Hispaniola, not Mr. Errol's (who, of course, was actually killed by Long John in the book). 30:50 - "SAY-tan is HEA-tin' his PO-kers for ye!" My favorite line reading of the movie. The bit about the bible is from the book, too. For the record (no spoilers since you already finished the movie), the treasure is gone because Ben Gunn spent the years he was marooned on the island searching for the treasure and moving it to a new location for when he could finally escape. 35:56 - One of the best set-up jokes ever. 38:34 - Again, this scene is mostly straight from the book. The relationship between Jim and Long John is one of the book's highlights. The major difference is that Long John escapes while the Hispaniola is docked at a port on the trip back, not while they're still within spitting distance of the island. He also escapes with only a few pocketful's of gold rather than a few chests worth.

@@LatetotheParty right? It’s soooo good! I saw it a few months ago! I’d listened to the soundtrack, but seeing it on stage blew me away! I may or may not be considering a House of Holbein related Halloween costume this year lol

What tickles my brain is knowing that this wasn't Tim Curry's first turn as a pirate. I've seen a clip here on youtube of him performing with the Drury Lane Theater in the '80's as The Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance. No surprise, he was awesome. You NEED to check out the show Black Sails! It wasn’t on a major channel so it not super popular but it’s one of the best shows you can watch, just ask anyone who watched past season 1!

@LatetotheParty it also has charlie Sheen playing a religious character. It's quite the movie and was also made by Disney in I think 1990. And I know you loved Muppet treasure island, I recommend the original treasure island from 1950 with Bobby Driscoll (who voiced Peter Pan in the original Peter pan) and Robert newton whose accent used in the movie helped cement how pirates talked. Sorry about the long comment XD

The Muppets are great with the classics - children need that sort of exposure to literature, and the Muppets are the perfect medium. The story would need a 'bad' guy and resolution.
