#STSNation,
Welcome to another episode of Surviving The Survivor, the podcast that brings you the #BestGuests in all of True Crime…
It’s Week Five of the double murder trial of embattled former attorney Alex Murdaugh …
Murdaugh is accused of killing his wife and youngest son, Maggie and Paul, at the family’s Colleton County property in June of 2021.
And that’s just a fraction of the story.
#BestGuests:
Eric Bland was selected for inclusion in the South Carolina Super Lawyers in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 list for excellence and recognition as a Super Lawyer in Professional Liability. He was one of two in the entire State of South Carolina with this honor.
He also happens to be representing the family of Gloria Satterfield, Alex Murdaugh’s one time housekeeper who some say died under mysterious circumstances.
He is host of Cup of Justice, a podcast about Alex Murdaugh.
Sarah Ford has served as Legal Director at the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network since
2017, where she leads a team of attorneys and advocates to provide direct legal services to South
Carolina crime victims. She is a former South Carolina prosecutor.
Mandy Powers Norrell is an American lawyer, politician and former Democratic member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Norrell formerly represented House District 44, which comprises the southern portion of Lancaster County.
She is a former prosecutor with a focus on crimes against women and children.

I don’t think the defense will change my mind. Who else could it be? He used the family’s guns. No one else would come without their own weapons. He only tossed Maggie’s phone. Not Paul’s. He knew Maggie’s code and he said no one knew Paul’s code. The video taken at the kennel with Alex’s voice on it, yet he denies ever being there. The On-Star was the final nail. EB is right. I spent 30 years in the US Army. 5 years, 8 months in close combat in Airborne Infantry and later Special Forces. I've been in the middle of and participated in more death, violence and carnage than most people. I'm as "hardened," I suppose as anyone could reasonably be. But. If I drove up and found MY son and his MOTHER on the ground with their blood, skulls and brains all over the place? I'd be EXACTLY like Eric Bland described. In shock. Either catatonic or screaming uncontrollably. Unable to think or speak coherently for DAYS, at the least. Alex Murdaugh, as far as we know, hadn't EVER encountered such a situation. He was never in the military, so he didn't even have the most basic level of training to prepare his mind. And here he was. Talking coherently, quickly launching into his alibi, possible reasons, and other possible suspects. Combined with the ABSENCE of the clothes, shoes, firearms, and evidence of anyone else, the odds of him NOT being involved are astronomical. FAR, FAR past reasonable doubt.

Great coverage guy's 👍 Even if Alex is given 20 seconds, where exactly was he when he called 911? When did he drive to the house to retrieve a gun mentioned to the first responder? Why no blood on steering wheel or phones, after touching the bodies? Where did he wipe down his hands, after turning Paul over and checking pulse of both victims? 🤔

Here's how I think Alex could have committed the murders within the timeline presented by the prosecution. I've posted this earlier on another channel: (Sorry it's so long but there's lots of detail) In the 23 minutes between Alex getting home & Paul's arrival there, Alex had lots of time alone to load the guns, gather some bags for the disposal, and put them in the back of the ATV at the kennels. He was there alone because the house-keeper and kennel-man were gone prior to Alex's arrival. Kennel-man testified there were no guns there while he was at the kennel. He seemed like the kind of guy who'd notice if there was. While Paul & Maggie were still alive Alex could have laid out the hose to top up a water bowl but also to have it ready for a quick clean up. His whole plan would have been to quickly commit the murders, clean up, and get out of there ASAP. He needed it to seem like the murders could have been committed while he was going to Almeda. He would be aware that time of death calculations would be imprecise and that he definitely needed to be quick about leaving in order to create an alibi. All of them could have gone together to the kennels in the golf cart. Getting Paul to the Feed Room would have been easy. Just ask him to fetch something. The walk for Alex from ATV guns to Feed Room would only take a few seconds. Easy to shoot unsuspecting Paul when he was trapped in the Feed Room. He would have known those first two shots would have brought Maggie back to the area to investigate. (Firing their own guns was a common enough thing that she'd likely run to the action than away from it. She'd be more confused than affraid). Alex was ready with the rifle to respond by shooting her. He'd then need to go over to the hose, strip down, hose off as best he could, and put on the poncho raincoat to lessen any inadvertent transfer of evidence. GSR on inside of coat may have been from his skin that he didn't successfully hose off. He likely bagged the guns and clothes for disposal, putting them in his golf cart for his return to his Suburban at the house. He could then go to the house, quickly shower, and put on new clothes before leaving to his Mother's house with the guns and clothes for disposal. When he left in the Suburban he likely was still wet as he had a beach towel on the front seat of the vehicle. I think he had the bagged clothes, bagged guns, and poncho on a tarp in the cargo area of the Suburban. Tarp would have prevented any evidence transfer to this trunk and because the bagged evidence may have been wet.. I suspect that after shooting Maggie, Alex wanted her phone to confirm it was receiving the texts & calls he intended to make to build his alibi. He might have taken the ATV to her body so the lights could help him find the phone. The tire came to a stop pushing on her leg. He found the phone but found she was still alive. He then put the last bullet in her head. In order for the slight leg bruising (reported by medical examiner) to have formed on Maggie's leg, she had to have still been alive when the tire made contact & transferred the mud seen in crime-scene photos. She was not run over. The steps recorded on her phone could have been Alex taking it to his parked golf cart. His own phone was off at that time. When he later made the texts & calls to Maggie's phone he would have had it with him, seeing the notifications to confirm it was receiving that support for his alibi. He may have planned on responding to the texts she received to make it look like she was still alive later than she was. That may have been thwarted because he could only see notifications & not open the phone. He soon tossed it out the window & sped up on his trip to Almeda. Calls to others were done by Alex on route to try to establish it was business as usual. Regarding Paul's phone, he may have intended to do the same but saw its battery was practically dead so he left it. He likely also saw the notifications of multiple texts & calls from Rogan. His later urgency in calling Rogan might have been out of concern that Rogan's unanswered contact attempts might pin the murders as earlier than Alex wanted the narrative to be. (Alex wanted police to think the murders occurred after Alex left for Almeda - Paul's phone suggested otherwise). When he arrived at Almeda he proceeded past the parking area and apparently even drove on the lawn. Before going into the house he was stopped for a minute with the vehicle running. During that time he could have run out and stashed the guns & bagged clothes. He was very familiar with that property and would only need a temporary hiding place as he'd have plenty of opportunity to properly & permanently dispose of that evidence later. (He even stayed there part of the time after the murders!). He was on the phone with Shelley, the care-giver, letting her know he was there & needed her to let him in, when he reached the house so he didn't make the call from the vehicle. Shelley also testified that she noticed the ATV with a flat tire had been moved with the implication Alex may have used it. When he was leaving Almeda he stopped moving near the end of the driveway for a minute. I'm thinking he got out to temporarily stash the tarp & raincoat in the thick vegetation located there. A few days later when he showed up at 6:30am to try to "encourage" Shelley to lie if asked how long Alex's visit had been on the night of the murders, he carried in and took upstairs the tarp. It seems the upstairs area was off limits to the care-givers. It was testified that a tarp was laid over a chair. That could suggest it was wet when Alex put it there (because it spent a few days stashed in the vegetation). The raincoat poncho that could have been wrapped in the tarp was found hidden (not hung) in an upstairs closet. When Alex returned from Almeda, he went to the house first. Knowing they were dead he might have been checking on the golf cart to be sure it left no evidence or put it away as it could have been left earlier next to where his Suburban had been parked. (Remember he was in a hurry earlier). Upon his arrival back at the kennels, Alex likely would have briefly surveyed the scene to be comfortable if it was safe to call 911. He called & waited. He could have coiled the hose while he waited so the scene looked just right. (Only he would put the hose away. No hit-squad would bother, but Alex likely had a planned vision of what the scene should look like). He might also have returned the ATV to the shed a few feet away while waiting the 19 minutes for the police to arrive. There was 10 minutes between the end of the 911 call and Alec calling his brother Randolph. I've done some further thinking about how they got to the kennels. It must have been the golf cart. Paul's truck & Maggie's Benz (or bicycle) weren't at the kennels. Nor was Alex's suburban until just before he called 911. There was a ATV there but it was neatly parked under the hanger's covered extension as if for storage. It wasn't raining prior to the discoveries of the bodies so had, say, Paul & Maggie used it (as defence may suggest) why park it there and not just where convenient? Paul didn't seem like the type to park it carefully particularly if he intended to later use it to return to the house. Also note the ATV was just a side-by-side so all three couldn't ride in it. Alex in an interview said Paul would NEVER walk to the kennels, so that leaves the golf cart for all three to use and adds to the possibility that Alex could have prepared earlier by putting guns in the ATV. That ATV has a work bed on the back with sides where guns would only be obvious if you walked up and looked in that box. Apparently on the driveway that comes into the kennel area from Moselle Road there is a small cottage next to the kennel range. In some of the aerials you can see it just off the far end of the kennels, at the end that is away from the feed room. It could be that that is where Alex cleaned up & changed his clothes. In that location he could have had clean clothing on the ready as part of his planning. Apparently that cottage wasn't searched by SLED. It could be the evidence that someone had a shower at the main residence is just a distraction. It might have been Alex had a quick shower after arriving home from work, reinforced by the testimony from the housekeeper that the clothes he was wearing in the tree Snapchat wasn't what he was wearing when he went to work that day. I also note the beach towel seen on Alex's Suburban's front seat. If that was there because after the murder his hair was wet from being hosed off or a quick shower, then it is very significant. I note it certainly wasn't a designer towel. It looks more like the kind of towel that might have been at the cottage than the main house.

You nailed it. I do think he planned this for a couple of months. Also since the jury can NOT take notes, I think they all will remember key witness testimony. His alibi is so blown. I do not see how the jury can imagine anyone but AM committing these murders unless some are threatened or paid off.

One thing that struck me when Eric brought up the fact that the sketch looked a lot like Connor Cook...throughout this entire sage, on at least 2 occasions I've heard Alex bein asked the names of the others on the boat and he plays like he doesn't know off the top of his head.... I call bs on that! Everyone following this case could prob name each person on that boat and we don't even know them! Alex knows them not to mention he's seen all of their names 500x in all of the legal docs. It's as if he's trying to put off the appearance that he wasn't as affected and invested in the legal aspect of the boat case when he absolutely was.

@Izzy Mariel Alex was smiling at the last witness. She was the spokesperson from either SLED or maybe the police department. She released the first statement to the press about the double murder. Wasn’t it creepy the way he was smiling at her?

I've watched a lot information on this case.....so many questions..... As for the odd angel of 2nd shot to Paul, Alex could have stumbled backwards out the door, being surprised that Paul didn't go down & was staggering forward. What did Alex mean when he said he figured it out, when he tried to roll Paul over. So much more.....
