That's the strangest looking bee suit. Is it more protective than the usual ones, necessary to deal with Asian hornets?
@Sagittarius-882 жыл бұрын
Asian hornets are a hell on earth of their own kind. Besides being aggressive, I believe their stingers are exceptionally long. They could probably pierce a normal suit, like the type people use for honeybees. The suits these dudes are wearing are probably like battle armor for nest removal. LoL

Watching on 0:25 I suggest that is is not giant Vespa mandarinia, but smaller species with dark color, Asian hornet Vespa velutina. Best wishes!
@bobjacobson8582 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is precisely what I was about to type. First of all, (as I'm sure you know) V. mandarinia doesn't build aerial nests, and of course the size and color pattern are very different. It seems that people want to call ANY Asian species of Vespa a 'giant murder hornet'. A couple years ago I watched a video from Japan in which it was quite plain the insects were Vespa crabro (and the location of the nest was consistent with this), but another commenter insisted they were V. mandarinia and got quite agitated with me when I didn't agree. (Hopedly I've learned a few things after studying them for half a century...)

@bobjacobson8582 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's true, but a pest control operator wants to make the best use of his time, and he knew that spraying at the end will solve the problem of the returning field workers. I'm in the US, and I often collected colonies of Dolichovespula during the daytime (netting as many returning workers as possible), but I usually collected Vespula (yellow jackets) at night. I collected European hornets (Vespa crabro) during the daytime because returning workers were easy to net as they circled around me.

After the initial takedown and bagging of the nest, if you had a ten gallon wet/dry vacuum (1/5 filled within-soap water), an 8-foot hose, and a five-inch diameter suction-end bell-fitting, you'd be able to suck out of the air (where most of the nest used to be) all fugitive hornets/wasps without all the flailing required by a net. Let electricity do all the hardest work.
