@Noah Hinson Music It wasn't just the term Venom coined, it was also the over theatrical Satanic imagery. They realised that, due to the Satanic Panic of the 80's, having all that imagery was a quick and easy way to get laid because you looked like a badass. So if we're sticking with them being proto-black metal, all that was technically proto-corpse paint, it just had a different meaning to it than getting laid all the time.

@Noah Hinson Music Between both Venom and Bathory, the foundations were definitely laid. Always fascinates me how you can boil it down to just those 2. Not that they were the only ones, much like Elvis wasn't alone during his era, but it's so interesting to be able to isolate 2 bands and basically pin down a whole sub-genre. Such an interesting piece of modern music history.

In my opinion, all this talk of what criteria a band must possess to make them Black Metal is moot. I dont think its about the ideology, the appearance, or where the are from. To me, Black Metal is such because of the guitar tone. Thats what makes BM instantly recognizable. Its all about the guitar tone.

I started listening to Venom,Witchfynder General,Motorhead,Death,Sodom,Hellhammer in the early days. Was heavily into the scene for many years. However,after awhile,a lot of this stuff started getting boring for me because it was faceless....all sounds the same after awhile. So now I still listen to the old stuff and a few bands like Toxic Holocaust etc.

Ben Priday The good stuff is still really underground or it has a black/death edge to it. Some of my favorite USBM bands are Yellow Eyes, Anicon, Shadow of The Destroyer, Grand Belial's Key, Hellgoat, Profonatica, Royal Arch Blaspheme, Abazagorath, Cult of Daath, Morbosidad, Unholy Crucifix (Started in Norway but moved to the US), Vesterian, and several more. The point here is that you have to dig deep to find the good stuff.

I agree because Black Metal is far less intense. Plus I can't stand the vocal style of bands like Immortal. Plus the music is usually very simple. Some black metal can be as brutal as Death Metal but not often. Also a lot of the corpse paint and posing looks incredibly clownish. There is a few exceptions but honestly the exceptions seem to be bringing black metal back into death metal realms and attributes with these exceptions.
