I like to think that the line "All... for nothing at all" was meant to represent the following guilt of the murderer. The music is filled with rage expressed by the pianist and then it comes to a stop, the cold realization settling in. The music turns melancholic and never strays from a just, saddening tone.

A type of easter egg in the song is that in the beginning the lyrics say "He was in the forest looking to see the trees But none were there" In the end of the song instead it says it from a first person view saying "I was in the forest looking to see the trees But none were there" The first lyrics of the video makes it appear in a third person view and then suddenly in the end of the video it becomes a first person view so i guess thats a cool easter egg

Ok I'll try my best to put my animation in words,,, first the characters: *The girl*: Is a girl."she saw the Erlking"(she is about to die or lose her soul) *The boy*: he Is looking for something obvious but hes unable to see it. *The fountain of infinite mirrors:* It represents the Great Truth *Steve:* Steve.( A creature that's lost with no memories" he was in the middle ground" and he is looking for the Truth.(he was the boy but can't remember)) Now, this whole animatic surrounds the concept of guilt, why? "Murders of murderers living in fear of it">>Guilt. The boy and the girl in the white wood represent Innocence, while in the dark wood represents the lost of innocence("how did they dare?!") After the night scene we don't know anything about the fate of the girl, that's up to you. Next scene we find Steve in the shadow of nobody there(still lost) but then he sees the sunset and remembers it all "the day and night remembered how they came to be". Shortly after that he finds the fountain and finds the unbearable Truth ( 💧) T H A T was the Truth?! "All for nothing at all" he burst out of anger in denial, finally embracing acceptance. Did he kill himself? Did he just keep living? No one knows. Ok this is basically it in a general view but I gave a deeper meaning to e v e r y line, so you can analyze it or dig even deeper into it. Once you see how the sunrise mirrors the diamond eye welling up with tears. That's the most delicate touch that could've been applied to such an otherwise dark and distressing song. Stamping out the flower in realization, desperation, and loathsome acceptance of what transpired. All for nothing at all. Thank you ever so much for this.

Personally I think of this could represent the singer (Simon) being paranoid his lover is cheating on him like at 1:19 it could be possibly her gambling out for a picnic and Simon thinking she’s with another which is what “shadow of nobody there means.” Realizing nobody’s there.
