Murphy DS602 CB27/81 UK FM CB radio - retune & test 13dec24

Nice condition set for it's age I never owned a Murphy set back in the day but I knew a few people that did but it was mainly the base station that was popular probably from the catalogue, anyway will look forward to the scratchy corner test.

Not a bad looking set and I've always preferred the larger meter that is shared by many others but sadly not many of the Cybernet 134s.

Hello Mike Parker at Westhall, thank you for your comment. Usually anything under 1uV is OK.....it's when you discover that those swish looking Cobra 29's only achieve 2uV that scratchy corner becomes a challange. I've three of them; the first bought new, the second bought used & third a donation. They are all as bad. Nice consistancy then. Richard

That’s probably also a receive hum on the Murphy. I doubt it’s from the midland?

We do get a hum on everything to some extent which means that sets that inherently hum really show up here. Bear in mind I'm in the middle of nowhere & the property is fed from an 11KV overhead line. The 11KV to 230V step-down transformer is only about 20 feet from the base aerial....and the 230V line is also overhead. The route from the 11KV transformer to he building is mainly attached to the outside wall of the building. The meter & breakers etc are 18 inches from the base aerial. Richard

I have one to repair, it works ok apart for the display which I can’t source as they are smaller than usual. Going to have to put it to one side until I can find one or scrap it….

I went on CB for the anniversary of CB, there were a few on, but quite far away from me. It did not help that it was a cold night, I was only on FM UK.

You say 'only' on UK FM....well if you tried the CEPT set of channels here there is no much foreign interference, we get a little as 1 mile range. On The UK channels we get as much as 35 miles. We can never get that on CEPT, even on a quiet day. Richard, G0OJF, UK

Murphy, not the worst radio out there, but not my favourite, however, they do work. The squelch is a bit odd in them, usually, but strangely, some squelches worked a lot better. I don't know if it was revised at some point, or the resistors were changed at one point?
