Murphy ME66 Diesel Engine part 1

This is a 1941 Murphy Diesel Engine. Serial #6113
It has a 6" bore and a 6 1/2" stroke.
It has 188 HP and 1102 cubic inches.
It is a 24 volt system and has a maximum of 1200 RPM.
The skids on this motor were factory mounted.
We purchased a complete saw mill and this motor was the machine that drove the 60" circular saw blade.
This motor will be on display at the Amador County Fair this summer in Plymouth, California

You can grab that handle on the fuel rack and give it full fuel .. you can overide the Govoner with that little bar in the fuel rack ..

Dude. that Murphy would have fired right up had you done it right. Try this, next time. Roll engine over on compression release as you did, then move throttle lever down (just pull it "off center", position not important at this time) keep the starter engaged, THEN immediately grab that 5/16 pin that sticks up and pull it towards you. The engine will fire right up. You must govern speed so it does not overspeed though. You have direct manual control of all injectors at this point, from off to wide open, hold it at a nice idle speed, then take your left hand and move the throttle lever down till the governor "takes control" from your right hand, then set idle speed wherever you like it and release right hand. Its kinda cool, you can feel the governor trying to do its thing, but you know you can override it, so you have a "bond" with the engine, so to speak. An ME or MP Murphy has a hydraulic governor that runs off oil pressure, that is why a Murphy will not run if it does not have or loses oil pressure. The small 5/16 pin on the end of the governor is a bypass of the oil pressure control of the injector rack. Notice in your above video the small pin while you crank on compression..., engine does not fire till it moves. That is the point it has sufficient oil pressure.You are guessing where the idle position is. If you had the throttle in a low fuel condition it would not move much, if at all. Conversely, if you had throttle all the way down (wide open) it would go to full open injectors as soon as oil pressure was achieved. Your way does work, but it takes a while of cranking to get it to fire, a bigger issue if batteries are a bit weak.

Were Murphy’s ever used in trucks?

I believe they were, but not very successful, they were incredibly successful in equipment!! Murphy could never make a engine do higher rpms needed for trucks. amazing engine to see how inners work!!

Hp=(tq*rpm)/5250 It makes 822.5ft/lbs if it is rated 188hp@1200rpm.
