Painted Man is an incredibly well written song and Murphy has genuine talent all around. Whether or not he goes far on American Idol, I believe he’ll go very far in life. There 's been a legion of more alternative forms of music that were mainstream successes worldwide for decades.Think back to the grunge era during the 90s or nu metal in the early 2000s as some prime examples. They even had Alejandro who did indie music and l think he was the runner up only two seasons prior. The point is that any type of music has the potential to become mainstream as long is its brilliant, including more obscure artists like Murphy.

After we watched this on TV I immediately went to KZbin and watched it again. And today I've watched this video probably +20 times I just can't get over it. He has like an edginess to him that isn't forced, it's just from his experiences in life. But through that edge you see this glistening soul that is so bright and happy and the equilibrium between the two is just bliss. I love everything about his personality and demeanor. SO AMAZING!!! I was tearing up watching his performance. Such an incredible artist on all levels. I was crushed when he didn't make it into the top 24, and yet I saw a few others go through who couldn't touch his talent vocally, instrumentally, or with their stage presence. And he is a song writer which truly makes him the full package. He reminds me of 70's artists like Jim Croce and Cat Stevens... We could use some of that wonderful music in our time that has such depth and feeling. He connects with people and their hearts. Love the show, but seriously was shocked when he didn't go through. Definitely top 10. I hope they bring him back.

This was the only one that I saw tonight that was not trying to be somebody else. If one wants another big vocalist that will be dependent on lyrics forever, Wray is the choice. If one wants somebody original, Murphy is your guy. I doubt he will go far, but he is somewhat interesting.
