Murray was one of the best tacticians, an intelligent player, who often used a players power against them. Changes of pace and creating angles, clever shots and nicely timed lobs, great movement and defence. Brilliant player.

Congrats on the new broadcasting assignment Gill! Considering how good you are at tennis talk and analysis, it's no surprise that you could seamlessly transition to play by play broadcasting of pickle ball, and many other sports which you mentioned. It's always gratifying to see a person find their calling and excel at what they do and really have a passion for their job. Way to go bro!!!!

I heard Gill on Tennis Channel for the first time about a month ago and nearly flipped out. I believe he was more the Color commentator, not the play by play, but I was happy anyway! And sorry to say that like the end of the Big 3 player era, commentating also needs a renovation. Some of the commentators say the same thing over and over again, and are not nearly as incisive about tactics the way Gill and a few others are .

Murray mailbag - YES!! - Lots and lots of questions - especially about his style, and what stopped him from winning more against the big 3, but also about his choices of coaches, especially Amelie, and his defence of women's tennis and equality - quite a contrast to Nadal who has frequently made sexist comments (I I think Novak also in the past said he though women shouldn't receive equal pay?)

There was nothing unfair about that call in the match between Vekić and Gauff. The call came simultaniously with the hit and she was missing the ball anyway.
@cobra7282

Yep. Why in sprinting is it considered a false start if you start moving less than a tenth of a second after the gun is fired? Because a human can not react faster than a tenth of a second. If the call came right as she is hitting the ball she would not have enough time for the call to affect her swing.

I feel like there’s such a big gap in slam count between Federer and Sampras that it’s fair to just cut the big 3 in their own tier at tier 1, Sampras, Borg, Laver in tier 2, and then do a tier 3 with more names that Murray should land in.

One critique I have with Tennis Commentary is that its very repetitive during the match. For example, If Alcaraz is playing someone for the most part, the commentators go on and on about how great he is instead of building up the suspense of the match. The same critique can be said for the post match interview questions. How many times are they going to ask Rafa when he will retire? lol I mean its so redundant

Thanks for another great mailbag! Just as an FYI, Sinner has said "it broke his heart" ('mi ha spezzato il cuore') to skip the Olympics since it was one of his main objectives for this season. If we take him at face value, then I don't think you're right when you theorize that he didn't prioritize it. Another term for (bacterial) tonsillitis is strep throat; if you've ever had strep throat as an adult, it can suck really bad, causing nausea, diarrhea, fever, etc. For someone who was favored to medal AND someone with his prior physical and retirement history, it didn't surprise me at all that he didn't just 'go for it' and see what happened. There would likely have been a pretty significant risk of retirement or some other embarrassing incident. I'm not a 22 year old dude, but I can imagine not wanting anything like that to happen ever again.

@@al1976-v7m He has a better chance at beating Djokovic than Alcaraz. He usually gets his serve broken at least once in every set against Alcaraz. Both of those matchups aren't his best though. He did play pretty well in the second set against Tommy Paul at the Queen's Club Final until Tommy's all-court pressure eventually undid him in the tiebreaker. Still I think its pretty impressive that he hasn't given up a set yet at the Olympics given that his draw has been kind of brutal.

A tennis podcast that has guests. Craig Shapiro podcast. He doesn't release episodes THAT frequently, but when they do get released, almost always very interesting. Current and former players, plus other people working in the tennis industry. You even referenced his interview with Rune's mother in one of your podcasts earlier this year. So it's not true that there are no tennis podcasts that routinely have good guests. Craig Shapiro always has an interesting tennis guest. I was sure that you were going to mention his name in that brief segment of the video.

It's incredible how Tsitsipas went from looking like a certain slam winner and a legit threat to beat Novak/Rafa a few years ago to now having no chance against the elite. It's not like he has suffered a serious injury that changed his game. He has no mental strength anymore.
@km10is
@km10is 5 ай бұрын
He hasn't suffered a serious injury, he's suffered two since 2021. As a result, he didn't get an off season this year. Saying that, he's still a shell off his former self and doesn't seem to have the necessary belief.

@@km10is I guess you are referring to the elbow surgery at the end of '21? I'm not sure what the other thing was. Regardless, I am not aware of his game fundamentally changing or him no longer being able to produce a particular stroke the same way à la Delpo BH.
@km10is
@km10is 5 ай бұрын
@@wildlive1296 Yes, I'm talking about the elbow surgery, as well as his back injury that caused him to pull out of the ATP Finals, and continued through the Australian Open this year. I agree that they are no where near as severe as Delpo's injuries, but he was somewhat forced to change his strings at the beginning of 2022 because of his elbow and he arguably hasn't been the same since then. Also, his stagnation is partially explained by the fact that he has had only one healthy off-season since 2020. (I also forgot in my original comment that he had a shoulder injury from after the Australian Open until almost the French Open in 2023.) All that to say, his biggest regression is his mentality and resilience, which is now not even top 20 level.

I was interested in the comment about the tennis commentators not showing enough enthusiasm and I think they have a good point. During the Olympics I have been watching tennis on Radio-Canada, the French arm of the CBC. Sometimes the commentators talk too much but they never lack enthusiasm. One got so excited she even called out in English: "I love it!" It made me realise what we are missing with other commentary.

Just gonna leave this here because I don't know where else to leave it: "I asked Jannik Sinner 🇮🇹 if he isn't a bit TIRED of this constant rhetoric of 'Sinner doesn't feel Italian enough', 'that he doesn't make the extra effort to go to Paris', etc, after all he's already done for Italian tennis 🗣 "It's a question I don't even want to have to answer honestly. I think only my team and I really know how I felt: from the outside it's one thing, from the inside it's another. I especially know how I felt. I had said since the beginning of the year that my biggest goal was the Olympics, but unfortunately I wasn't even able to get out of bed. Then honestly, what people think... let's say I give it little importance, little weight. I'm not on social media anymore, which is something that does me a lot of good. Then I read some things anyway, it's obvious that when you open your phone there are notifications and I see something. But I also know who I am as a person and what kind of people I have around me, who all care a lot about me. Unfortunately this time it went like this, there will always be some good things and some a little bit worse, like this. I understand people's reaction, I'm honest, but now I'm here in Montreal and what happened happened" (Italian journalist Giovanni Pelazzo on X)

Murray in his prime of 2011-2016: Three slams, six slam finals, seven slam semis (16 semis+ from 23 tournaments entered), eight Masters 1000s, two Olympic golds, a Tour Finals win, five year end top four finishes, 28 total titles. All time great player in the strongest era ever, those numbers would have been much better in any other era. The last few years have been good for him, still competing at a high level with a metal hip, often being the best early rounds match at big tournaments. Glad he hasn't played any of the Big Three since then, we should remember his matches with them when he could compete.

Regarding replaying point, its about whether the call affect the shot enough that the vould have gotten it in if the call didnt occur. Its not about "touching" the ball before the call. Once a modern FH has started accelerating out of the "drop / pat the dog" tge swing is out of control, tgeres not a lot a player can control. Slow-mo wont help unless youre changing tge rules to "touch" the ball rather than if the call affected the shot. Players know to play the ball

Gill, I’ve seen niche basketball channels make pyramid top 25-30 of the best NBA players including different eras. Pyramid style is probably slightly better than straight tiers. I’m sure you can use a template to sort and describe your opinions. If not conclusive, and something that could change with alcaraz, sinner etc it’s a good thought experiment, especially as a visual guy. Hope this happens, and yeah I’d bias modern tennis and draw a line in the sand at a certain historical period, as newer greats I believe are better

Gill isn't a tennis celebrity like the guests have been so far with roddick like clijsters, eisenbud, isner etc, which will draw new listeners to his poscast. Which gill isn't by himself and that's fine, hes a different story, not an hands on inside the pro tennis industry story. I think in maybe a year or less when they've developed enough of a base audience, they will invite gill on as a different look for a more tennis topical episode and both nerd out on all the relevant players and analysis.

RE: Commentary energy. I think a lot of this is culturally dependant also. As a Brit, I sometimes find super-high energy commentary really annoying to listen to. Particularly if it happens during open play and they distract from the action. You also have to consider the hours these people spend in tiny booths watching matches constantly for days/weeks and expect them to keep up a consistent level of energy. I would say overall sport knowledge, interesting facts, dissecting the difficulty of crazy shots, and comic banter are all much more important than loud, high energy emotion. That's primarily the crowd's job.

You just can’t cross era’s. The idea that Rod Laver would even be able to compete with Andy Murray is a joke. Rod laver’s era of tennis took 0 physicality, proper diet, constant training, etc etc. They were like club players in terms of fitness

Really you haven't? Yeah he's a thoroughbred, like Djokovic and like Carlos and others I'm sure. And Sinner's got time to win an Olympic Gold. Djokovic would have swum the Seine if he had to to get his gold. Fabulous match, great tennis from both. And happy for Djokovic.

Pickleball is terrible. Talk about "low energy". Are you kidding me? Its like backyard activity being pushed as sport. Terrible. Reg Nadal: I used to be a fan but his dragged out slow retirement really made me dislike him. Its like come on dude. Should've gone out on top instead letting his ego get the best of him. He is by far not capable to play top level anymore. Period. There's no beating around the bush. And it's painful to watch.
