Congrats on the new broadcasting assignment Gill! Considering how good you are at tennis talk and analysis, it's no surprise that you could seamlessly transition to play by play broadcasting of pickle ball, and many other sports which you mentioned. It's always gratifying to see a person find their calling and excel at what they do and really have a passion for their job. Way to go bro!!!!

I heard Gill on Tennis Channel for the first time about a month ago and nearly flipped out. I believe he was more the Color commentator, not the play by play, but I was happy anyway! And sorry to say that like the end of the Big 3 player era, commentating also needs a renovation. Some of the commentators say the same thing over and over again, and are not nearly as incisive about tactics the way Gill and a few others are .

Murray mailbag - YES!! - Lots and lots of questions - especially about his style, and what stopped him from winning more against the big 3, but also about his choices of coaches, especially Amelie, and his defence of women's tennis and equality - quite a contrast to Nadal who has frequently made sexist comments (I I think Novak also in the past said he though women shouldn't receive equal pay?)

There was nothing unfair about that call in the match between Vekić and Gauff. The call came simultaniously with the hit and she was missing the ball anyway.
@cobra72825 ай бұрын
Yep. Why in sprinting is it considered a false start if you start moving less than a tenth of a second after the gun is fired? Because a human can not react faster than a tenth of a second. If the call came right as she is hitting the ball she would not have enough time for the call to affect her swing.

One critique I have with Tennis Commentary is that its very repetitive during the match. For example, If Alcaraz is playing someone for the most part, the commentators go on and on about how great he is instead of building up the suspense of the match. The same critique can be said for the post match interview questions. How many times are they going to ask Rafa when he will retire? lol I mean its so redundant

About the question of Doubles players in Singles in Olympics, Leander Paes won Bronze in Atlanta in Singles.
@MiddleAgedTennisFan4 ай бұрын
Thanks for another great mailbag! Just as an FYI, Sinner has said "it broke his heart" ('mi ha spezzato il cuore') to skip the Olympics since it was one of his main objectives for this season. If we take him at face value, then I don't think you're right when you theorize that he didn't prioritize it. Another term for (bacterial) tonsillitis is strep throat; if you've ever had strep throat as an adult, it can suck really bad, causing nausea, diarrhea, fever, etc. For someone who was favored to medal AND someone with his prior physical and retirement history, it didn't surprise me at all that he didn't just 'go for it' and see what happened. There would likely have been a pretty significant risk of retirement or some other embarrassing incident. I'm not a 22 year old dude, but I can imagine not wanting anything like that to happen ever again.

@km10is5 ай бұрын
He hasn't suffered a serious injury, he's suffered two since 2021. As a result, he didn't get an off season this year. Saying that, he's still a shell off his former self and doesn't seem to have the necessary belief.

@@km10is I guess you are referring to the elbow surgery at the end of '21? I'm not sure what the other thing was. Regardless, I am not aware of his game fundamentally changing or him no longer being able to produce a particular stroke the same way à la Delpo BH.
@km10is5 ай бұрын
@@wildlive1296 Yes, I'm talking about the elbow surgery, as well as his back injury that caused him to pull out of the ATP Finals, and continued through the Australian Open this year. I agree that they are no where near as severe as Delpo's injuries, but he was somewhat forced to change his strings at the beginning of 2022 because of his elbow and he arguably hasn't been the same since then. Also, his stagnation is partially explained by the fact that he has had only one healthy off-season since 2020. (I also forgot in my original comment that he had a shoulder injury from after the Australian Open until almost the French Open in 2023.) All that to say, his biggest regression is his mentality and resilience, which is now not even top 20 level.

Just gonna leave this here because I don't know where else to leave it: "I asked Jannik Sinner 🇮🇹 if he isn't a bit TIRED of this constant rhetoric of 'Sinner doesn't feel Italian enough', 'that he doesn't make the extra effort to go to Paris', etc, after all he's already done for Italian tennis 🗣 "It's a question I don't even want to have to answer honestly. I think only my team and I really know how I felt: from the outside it's one thing, from the inside it's another. I especially know how I felt. I had said since the beginning of the year that my biggest goal was the Olympics, but unfortunately I wasn't even able to get out of bed. Then honestly, what people think... let's say I give it little importance, little weight. I'm not on social media anymore, which is something that does me a lot of good. Then I read some things anyway, it's obvious that when you open your phone there are notifications and I see something. But I also know who I am as a person and what kind of people I have around me, who all care a lot about me. Unfortunately this time it went like this, there will always be some good things and some a little bit worse, like this. I understand people's reaction, I'm honest, but now I'm here in Montreal and what happened happened" (Italian journalist Giovanni Pelazzo on X)

Murray in his prime of 2011-2016: Three slams, six slam finals, seven slam semis (16 semis+ from 23 tournaments entered), eight Masters 1000s, two Olympic golds, a Tour Finals win, five year end top four finishes, 28 total titles. All time great player in the strongest era ever, those numbers would have been much better in any other era. The last few years have been good for him, still competing at a high level with a metal hip, often being the best early rounds match at big tournaments. RE: Commentary energy. I think a lot of this is culturally dependant also. As a Brit, I sometimes find super-high energy commentary really annoying to listen to. Particularly if it happens during open play and they distract from the action. You also have to consider the hours these people spend in tiny booths watching matches constantly for days/weeks and expect them to keep up a consistent level of energy. I would say overall sport knowledge, interesting facts, dissecting the difficulty of crazy shots, and comic banter are all much more important than loud, high energy emotion. @@FraudkovicMurray doesn't make my ATG Major > 6 retirement. Becker 6, Edberg 6 & Wilander 7 are my cut off. Becker was 2nd best on fast surfaces most his years. If he didn't become lazy and hit heavy drugs he'd have become much better. Murray was 4th best of his era, Nice guy but he's not better than anyone with 6+ Majors. Carlos is better, but still playing. Sinner would give him a good run but he lacks endurance

Sportbetting is an ugly industry. I think it's acceptable to let one have a sponsor-spot in your vidoe if you don't have a better choice, but is it really a good idea to have their logo presented through the whole video?

Bad move, Gil. Stick with tennis. You’ll be calling the US open finals in a few years

Commentary during the Olympics is horrible. Whoever that woman commentator is needs to go. She is so darn boring. No enthusiasm, no energy, sleep inducing.

No one cares about Murray. Boring playing style, half the people were dozing in his matches

Really like your analysis but to be honest quite dissapointed you are joining the pickle ball cult...

So Gill addresses a question about players receiving online abuse from disgruntled punters, saying how bad it is and is glad the ATP have brought in an initiative to help tackle it, only for him to take money from a sports betting company and has their logo plastered across the screen for the entirety of the video. Hypocrisy at its finest.🤣

@@vivahernando1 Yes but not as blatant as this, literally answered a question about online abuse at players, mostly driven by people who've lost a bet, 30 seconds later he's plugging a company whose industry is the root cause of the problem.

Don’t let any make you forget: STEF won about 11 or 12 points off Nole ERRORS to get to 4-0, and had his FIRST winner 3-0, 30-0, IIRC But… he’s a Lost Genner, so this isn’t a surprise, only seeing it unfold is INSANE FAA, the last of the Lost Generation, was DESTROYED by the Prince Regent, er, the new King 😆
