Holden has been feeling like Proto- molecule Miller has been using him. And now Miller seems to be turning on switches regardless of the dangers to the colony. So Holden fired on the megalith. It’s within his character.

@mmattson8947 10 ай бұрын
Holden also blew up the Marasmus (the medical ship outside of Eros) in Season 2. Even though that crew thought they were doing the right thing, their actions would have done a lot more damage, and there wasn't time to fix their misconceptions. The megalith was going to hit the colony if it wasn't stopped. Wasn't like Holden was going missile-happy because he was bored. I don't understand what Clarus thought was a reasonable alternative for Holden to do.

@@mmattson8947 What I think she got from season 3, and how that conflicted with what Holden did here is that; in season 3, Holden said that the Ring Hub was responding to their aggressiveness, with deadly force, and now here Holden chose to take aggressive action against the Megalith, which seems backwards. But that’s thing. In the Ring Space, the Hub was only reacting our aggressiveness. Whereas here, whatever Miller’s doing is threatening us humans. Holden is concerned about everybody. So he’ll do whatever to minimize the human cost, even if it means looking and sounding like fool, doing foolish things. So Holden is being Holden.

I agreed with Clarus. I’ve always considered this to be a dumb move by Holden given his experience with the PM. Keep this in mind with what happens now and in subsequent seasons. As plot movement, I can understand it, but it just seems diametrically opposed to what he learned previously. In the heat of the moment though, I can understand his behavior. As an outside observer from the comfort of my couch…dumb.

I think that years of poorly written television has left many of us skeptical when it comes to plotlines. I have said this before but trust the writers of this show... just like in season one when a story about a rich girl being sent home to her family, smuggled Martian stealth tech, and an ice hauler being blown up seemed to have nothing related to each other; the writers eventually wove these threads into a very good tapestry. Allow them to do the same now and you will not be disappointed.

This is one of my favourite episodes of the whole series. At the beginning of the episode Scotty asks Murtry, 'You going to kill us all?'. At the end Murtry replies. 'I hope that answers your question.' It took me, as an audience member, just a couple of seconds to link these lines up. It was something of a cognitive dissidence, to say the least. They take a whole episode to set up those two lines with what, I think, is incredible impact through the brutal simplicity of the characters behaviour and the delivery. This episode also has what I think is the out-right coldest Amos line of the whole show. 'How about now? I'm free right now.' Delivered with such straight forward calm. Murtry is someone who puts people in a state of discomfort and he is used to a certain state of emotion in those he is dealing with. However, Amos knows it is going to happen so why wait? May be because Holden does not like it if you kill people without talking it through first. However, I think you correctly guessed that, as soon as Murtry is an unacceptable problem... Also I would remind everyone that while Bobby specified no weapons, anything used correctly can be a weapon.

I think you're both right about the violence in this season. This storyline I think is meant to show how human nature can impede progress, and how it takes the best of humanity to overcome that. Many people see Murtry's character as a big bad mustache twirling villian in the books and the show, but I think in the books we see a nice juxtaposition of how he behaves with his people (stern, but almost kind) vs. the Belters he's "protecting" them from. He thinks he's doing the right thing. He and Amos are really cut from the same cloth, Amos just has a better guiding star in James Holden.

I think Bobbie makes a fair point stating that she is not a criminal. I understand what you are saying, that Mars would see her past actions as crimes against their authority. But in her eyes, her acts of insubordination I would say, were done to fight against the already criminal acts being perpetrated by Mars. (Like lying & covering up the intentionally covert operation on Ganymede). She has never set out to do anything illegal or harmful, like theft of technology. This is the first time she has let something like that happen knowingly.

@Icypenguigo

The violence of this season does take on a darker tone, I feel. Throughout the show so far, all the violent acts usually have some kind of understandable motive. Belters' hatred of Inners, Inners' disregard for the lives of Belters. Corporate scumbags sacrificing lives for their bottom line. Misguided and desperate people killing in the name of what they think is right. Here's the big difference in this season: Murtry. Murtry is a straight-up psychopath. He maintains a veneer of legitimacy and uses excuses like "I'm just doing my job" or "I'm just protecting my people". But the truth is, he gets off on the violence. He uses unnecessarily brutal tactics and kills preemptively in situations where anyone reasonable wouldn't immediately jump to the murder option. He escalates violent situations and then uses it as a justification to escalate his own violent actions. So yeah, the violence in this season is harsher, because we are dealing with a literal dead-eyed, heartless man who has a constant murder boner. At least the Protogen employees had their empathy surgically removed. Murtry has no such excuse.

The rest of the Belters are operating the mine, repairing their camp, drinking rocket fuel, or plotting the untimely demise of the RCE goon squad. Well, they _were_ anyway. I agree that Holden's actions at the end of the episode don't make a lot of sense, and they feel out of character. But I kindof see why he might make the call he does. I don't think he talks to Miller here, he just gets frustrated by how the situations has unfolded and Miller has gone missing and unlike when they were in the Slow Zone, on this planet the big spinning tooth thing is already a direct threat to Naomi and Alex and the rest, and he has no real immediate alternative to try and stop it. One thing to consider is that the genre of the book this is drawn from is that of a Western. And Westerns are kinda bleak and dark. I mean, sure, horsies and olde timey music, but still the situations get pretty bleak till they lead to the two men drawing down on each other on Main Street at high noon to solve the problem. Now obviously this is the expanse, so it might be a man and a protomolocule creature or a mechbot drawing down on each other with rockets in a spacecraft. And Main Street might be a wormhole or an Ancient Structure. But again, things need to get pretty bleak to get to that point.

Something you may have missed = Murtry & crew represent a mega corporation that has been granted (by Earth) the right to mine the natural resources. From their perspective the planet (they call New Terra and not Ilis) is theirs and the Belters are squatters and thieves (stealing the resources). Their intention all along was to evict them from the planet. At the end of the season, Murtry will talk about a bonus he’ll receive if successful. Typical colonization behaviour, claiming land that’s not theirs. I mean… if they’d been willing to share the planet, they could have landed (safe from a blown up landing pad, I should add) and set up shop on the other side of the planet. But there’s no Expancse story in that 😉

Remember that many of the drop ship crew died in the bombing. I am NOT defending him, now! I mean that in the sense of how everyone, even a villain, is the hero of their own story. Think Murtry in the way you saw corporate cruelty in Blue Beetle.

I know you're way ahead of filming but there's some things the show doesn't put in to the right perspective for book 4/season 4. On Illus the majority of the scientists were sent back up to their main ship in orbit for safety, what was destroyed was just a shuttlecraft. Murtry and the people down on the surface are a private security force hired for the scientists. The Bobbie plotline is important for the overall trilogy that is book/season 4,5, and 6 and in season 4 specifically is more about the downfall of mars.

Metric units are a result of trying to be OCD level "scientific". They are excellent for doing scientific and engineering calculations, but what they are based on is rather inhuman. It rather easy to get approximate measures for Imperial units of length off of your own body. Trying to visualize what a meter is actually based on is not helpful to figuring out what that length (and therefore the length of a kilometer) actually is if you have never seen a meter stick.

In the books Havelock eventually realizes Murky's off the rails and kinda low key switches sides. I do like that most of the women in the show are very strong. And they don't call attention to it because it's "normal" in this future...you just sort of realize it later on. A lot more surprises this season.

The problem with colonialism in our world comes from the fact that we build our colonies on other people's shit. This is the source of ethical concerns around colonialism. In The Expanse they're colonizing planets without any inteligent life already living there. This type of colonialism isn't perfect either, but here it's because of general problems with capitalism, so it's just as ethical or not as how Earth, Mars and the Belt are being ran now.

Edward Israel was an astronomer and polar explorer. He died on an ill-fated expedition to the Arctic. The leader of the expedition was called Adolphus Greely. Here we have the de facto leader of the RCE expedition after the original leader was killed in the shuttle crash, Adolphus Murtry. Pretty much all the ship names in the Expanse are historical or literary references. Though, we often see dual or multiple meanings with episode titles, so there may ba a multiple meaning in the ship name too. Current situation certainly makes it more salient.

The spinning thingy in the desert bugs me a little as in the book it's like some sort of mech so dropping a torpedo on it made a bit more sense. Also, according to Murtry's MO he is entirely justified. He just conducted a SWAT style raid on a terror cell that were planning to murder him and members of his team. As for RCE, they are the security contingent who were supposed to help back up the diplomatic side. Head diplomat died in the crash and Murtry was left in charge of the operation. There's a lot more science stuff in the book. You get entire chapters on Elvi's science brain. This was the first season I felt the book far outstripped. And as you mentioned, Bobbie's storyline is one of the Novellas but with some changes.

Also, this "dialogue" about colonialism is just a cover for anti-white racism, since it conveniently downplays other empires and their effect in the world, including the Moors, the Ottomans, the Monguls and others. We are all the product of colonialism, we were all slaves once. It is neither right or wrong, it just is.
