Welcome to Hansens Speed Shop for another of my vintage muscle bike ride & reviews, this time we take another look at my campus green 68 Schwinn stingray 3 speed

Thanks once again for the trip down memory lane. I do remember the shifter Stingrays. That is one nice springer front end. It really sets the bike off. They do help the ride. I appreciate the information on correctness of the bike, but half the fun of having one was to make it your own by adding custom parts. Thanks again for your videos. Love your channel.

I didn't realize it at the time, but I think that I grew up poor. No one in my neighborhood had one of these. But we all wanted one. The ads were in comic books at the time. I put a similar looking bike together out of junk bikes, and that was good enough for me. It had an aftermarket banana seat, 24" fork and the loopity-loop handlebars and was a pretty rusty hulk. But it was all mine. Good times 🙂

I think almost every kid back then wanted a stingray but most weren’t lucky enough to get one because they were at least double the price of the average department store bike but definitely worth it thanks for watching

I spent hours at the corner of white plans RD and 228 ST. At the Swin bike store dreaming of my next bike. as a kid in the Bronx.

That's one sweet bike I never had a stingray. I need to get one Be fun to build. My friend when I was a kid You might remember these He had a schwinn scrambler If I remember right it had the old mags on it. Have not seen one for years. Thanks for sharing man You got some cool stuff👍

I’m only 18 but really like these bikes. I’m British so it’s very hard to get original ones here. The new models are smaller and I don’t like the seats compared to the originals. I just wish I could get one

Dude degrees and sand with (400) the line on the gripper slik. Use the fabrick marker from Walmart or eBay paint you a color line on that bad boy! I been painting on my color lines for 20 year's! We ride our bikes and the paint sticks great long as you prep the rubber correct!

Depending on the month it would have a white sparkle seat a later 68 would be a color match like a 69.

I know it’s not the correct seat but at the time when I put this bike together I got the seat for like 60 bucks and I was trying to get by on a budget maybe some day I’ll put the correct seat on, thanks for watching

@@HansensSpeedShop yeah I hear ya man. I'm just saying depending on the month of the build. It would be a silver glo or a color match. Like for example my Dec 68 fastback is known as a Christmas bike! It has the color match seat instead of a silver glo. And has the super cool early 69 donut ball shifter handle.

Didn't Schwinn make the green stingray with an internal archer 5 speed as well?

They did make 5 speed stingrays fast backs and krates but they weren’t internal just the 2 & 3 speeds were

If I get a 20 inch springer. Will the truss rods be the same size as the one I have now? At 20 inches hole to hole. Or will the truss rods be a little shorter so I don't have the same problem.

I can’t say for sure I haven’t ever bought any modern repop springers but also check to make sure it’s the correct head tube length for a schwinn some aftermarket springers have the longer head tube similar to girls schwinns

What head tube length do you recommend for my 1968 schwinn sting ray delux. It has S2 28 spoke in back and s7 28 spoke in the front. The tires are both 20 inches tall.

@@darrennagatori465 the head tube has to be 5 3/8 long for a boy’s Schwinn tire size doesn’t matter all I can say is you should visually be able to see the difference between the krate fork (longer and more strait) and the stingray fork(shorter and slightly more curved) I try to stick to actually Schwinn parts that way I know they will fit

Mr Hansen thank you so much for all your time and expertise. I looked on line and I found a 20 inch springer. The steering tube length is 5 5/8 inches long. Threading is 2 3/4 inches long, 1inch steerer. Would that be okay. That's the closes I could get to the recomended 5 3/8 steering tube length. It's about 1/4 inch to long. Do I need to trim the top steering tube 1/4 inch. Leaving me with 2 1/2 inches of threading at the top of steering tube. Hope this is the correct size. What do you think? Well Schwinn offered 2 different length springers on there 20” bikes the shorter one for the 20” wheel like on this bike and the longer one for the krates with the 16” front wheel just get out and do some hunting try eBay or market place

Thanks for the reply. I have a 1968 schwinn delux. S2, 28 spokes rear wheel. And a S7, 28 spoke front wheel. I like the looks of your bike. I have a springer fork. But it looks like it came from a crate bike. It has a hole on the bottom left truss rod. The truss rod measures 20 inches hole to hole. By looking at your bike. Your front tire tire seems like a good hight. Im trying to achieve the same look. But my tire is roughly 5 inches away from the bottom of the steering tube. Your tire looks only about 2 inches away from your steering tube. What length is your springer truss rods? My springer truss rods measures 20 inches hole to hole. Is your springer a 16 inch? @@darrennagatori465 you might have the krate style fork which is actually for a 24” front wheel so that with a 16” front wheel the bike will sit level but a 20” springer should be right

There's no such thing as a Lucky 7 chainring the Lucky 7 is a seat post. Fyi

What are you talking about this sprocket has been referred to as a lucky 7 or a 7 hole for ever I’ve never heard any relation to a seatpost being called that ever
