On my 72 Barracuda I had the same twin scoop fake hood,i cut out the 2 holes in the hood where the faux aluminum hood scoops went and then cut out the middles of those and was in the process of cobbling it together to create a working set of scoops. Unfortunately the 440 block cracked in September when a freak cold snap rolled into New England and overnight, the temps dropped from the daily 70s down to 20 something! I only had water in the block because I had just finished buttoning up the top end and was going to start it the next day. Figures Murphys law got me and I sold the car thoroughly disgusted a few days later without fixing the hood. Today I can luckily use a 3D printer to make up the rest of the internal pieces parts that Chrysler never made, to my knowledge atleast, for that type of a functioning hood scoop setup! Thanks again!

I had a 68 442 with Ram Air and what I remember was that damn Ram Air would suck up all the garbage in the street like a vacuum cleaner. It wasn’t until years later that I read a tip on one of the hotrod magazines about putting a mesh screen right behind the snorkel that was just below the bumper ☹️

As I remember a lot of people modified those non functional snorkel hoods into functional ones by removing the block off plates and adding their own flexible ducting solutions. I personally liked cowl induction so I added a fiberglass L88 style hood to my !975 Camaro, the year you couldn't get a Z28 option, and made it functional.

An interesting look at the styling that sold muscle cars, I still like those hoods even if they don't do anything lol. Thanks Steve another good video.

The Challengers 70-74 did have a removeable plate in the hood scoops that you could remove and get fresh air into the air cleaner area. The funnel at the end there was a open area at the top close to the hood. Both my 1971 and 1973 had this openning and removeable plates.

I had an 82 Z-28. It had hoods scoop air. Had to put aluminum foil over the air cleaner opening and the thumb screws to wash it. Water got in otherwise. Caused hydrolock no start, broke two starters and finally even with the air cleaner covered, enough water got in it and a WFO throttle sucked water in and hydrolocked and threw a rod thru the block. All for a whopping 165 hp😏🤷♂️

In the early 1970s, noise regulations meant that some ram air type cars didn't happen as they were too noisy to meet the requirements. I wouldn't consider a large V8 inhaling lots of air through a hood scoop a noise, more like music :)

It would make sense if a aftermarket company( or make it yourself) could invent some sort of plenum/ductwork via air filter/carburetor retro fit,so as to make the cuda nostrils hood become actual ram air (vacuum or electric operation) ,it could give some power and it would be cool to make the four barrels sounds.

The 69 ZL-2 Cowl Induction Camaro hood had a flap door with electric solenoid....In fact this same flap door was used on the 70 SSChevelle hood and many don't know this....but, the later 73 and up L-82 Corvette hood for weather protection. I want to know why it seemed the T/A Challenger Hood was seen on 6BBL and HEMI Challengers....Was it actually a legitimate option? Lots of 1971 NHRA Stock & SS Challengers sporting that hood....Also like the 68-69 Road Runner cold air hoods....Very intricate design as were the Shakers and Air Grabbers that came on later B body Mopars....This wasn't long enough...Then there were other manufaturers Even "Nash" had cold air stuff....The most outrageous being the 1969 Hurst SC/Rambler....My buddy had a 69 Cutlass Ram Rod W-31 and used to crack his below the bumper scoops at a fast rate...They were around $37/each in the middle 70's for replacement...You could do a 2 hour show on Muscle Car Era cold air induction systems...Such a great era!
@Sir.VicsMasher Жыл бұрын
Not a hood but one of my favorite air induction's was GM's [Cowl pleneum ducted air cleaner] that was an over the counter option for Camaro's, Chevelle's and full size's from 67-69. If you can find one they're gonna cost more than the whole car was when new.
