Bought a 2-year-old 70 Z28 from the original owner with 8700 miles on it when I was a senior in high school. I bolted on a set of headers by ED along with a pair of turbo mufflers so it could breathe. I took out the 410 rear gears and replaced them with a set of Richman 456 gears. And put on a set of BF Goodrich TA radials for traction. From 3500 hundred to 7000 grand that LT-1 was in its element. One of the best stop light to stop light racers I ever owned in that era. Against all comers including big block Ford -Mopars and Chevys In fifty or more street races, the car only lost 5 or 6 times.

Must have passed everything but gas stations. Gas was only about $0.30 cents a gallon in 70 but minimum wage was only $2.00/hr.

I'm a Ford guy (though back in the day I did own a '67 SS 396 Camaro and a '69 SS 350 Camaro) but I always thought the '70 Z28 was the best looking car I ever saw...all these cars and decades later I still think it is.

Had a '68 Mustang fastback that I redid with a 390 - a 70's Formula Firebird 400 with that awesome long scoop setup (that is all this Z was missing by the way - lol) - & quite a few others ... right now beginning a complete resto on a '67 GTO for my bro which is another one close behind in the 'eyeball' dept. -(just somethin' about the goat ya know) ... have fun with those Fords - for thats what they're all for - some cool fun regardless.

360 horsepower was underrating it by a fair margin for insurance reasons. One of the drag racing associations at the time rated the stock LT1 at 425 hp. I once owned an '81 Camaro which had an LT1 from '70 in it with some performance upgrades and that thing was FAST.

I much prefer the second generation Camaro than the first. This car is gorgeous - right down to the color. Nice find. If I ever had the chance, (other than a 1960 Chevy Impala bubbletop) I'd get a 1970 Z28. I love the lines, the accessories, the interior... everything about this car.

Still have my 73 RSLTZ28 bought new in July 73.When new it did a best of 14.4 @ 99mph,3.73 diff.and shifting the m-21 @ 6000rpm.It would top out @ 135 mph.The engine has never been apart after 64000 miles,and it is still a strong runner today.

@Stefanovich Michael So you are saying that a stock, low compression 350 in a 1973 Z28 and still run 14.4??? I know they changed the way they measured horsepower somewhere in that time frame, just a 1971 Z28 had 330 horsepower whereas 1973 only had 245 horsepower. Of course, that's stock.

@@ONTHEEDGEFRED You are forgetting that in 1972,horsepower ratings were changed from gross to net.A 71 zee had the very same LT-1 engine as the 72,yet the 72 was rated at 255.The 73 L82 had the same internals,camshaft etc.as the 69 350 hp.found in the corvette,only the compression was down to 9:1,so the 73 Z28 was making about 320-325 horsepower gross.

I was just going to point that out myself. There was the Z28 and there was also the Rally Sport. RS being a visual upgrade also called the Split Bumper. So if you have a split bumper z28 you have an RS/Z28. Just in case you didn't know the 1970 1/2 as this model is came with the Chrome Camaro badge on the hood, 71,72,73 came with one that had a red background. Also the 70 1/2 name badges said Camaro, then underneath said By Chevrolet. the other models did not have that simply and simply said Camaro .......................

Definitely do agree ... I also had several & the '70 1/2 RS Z I had for many years was the one I whole-heartedly miss for many a reason ... (had to go & sell the damn thing back in 2009 due to that frickin' economy crash - it was either lose the cool ass car or lose the awesome house - I chose the roof & I lost dammit) !!!

It wasn't an insanely expensive over the top "$50 to $70,000 boat.....but a really nice $24,000 boat. I paid a large down pmt along with my older boat as trade in, to get the balance as low as possible, and then paid the thing off in less than 2 years. With the title in hand, I told my friends & family: "Guys, she's all mine now & nobody can take it away".......I bought it brand new in 2004. I didn't want to sell my boat at any price, yet had to, in order to save our home, just like you. Ya work hard your whole life trying to build a small business, and then reward yourself with a toy that isn't living beyond your means........pay it off quickly.......and STILL lose in the end. I hate corrupt govt.

I bought mine used circa 1980. It came with a 780 CFM vacuum carb and 411 rear end. It got a lot punchier around town when I switched to a 650 mechanical double pumper. Sorta miss it now and then.

I had a 69 1/2 Mach 1 SCJ with the GT package. Very rare and fully loaded . My car was totally stock with the exception of Traction bars , Shelby racing rims and a Hurt competition plus shifter. I fell into buying the Mustang by a deal I couldn't pass up. I'm a dirt rider turned street racer. There is a replacement for displacement. Weight is and most big blocks in the Trans am style cars were a joke, even my car. If you couldn't manage the power you just sat and turned your wheels. Handling ❓ No in the big blocks. I didn't lose many runs,but lost to good driver in a I think a 70 Camaro 350. We ran twice and he just moved ahead in third . I had the low gear ratio ,and the car had too much in the bottom . What I had learned to do was to ease on first and throw the Mustang into third. I didn't lose any races after that but feared the small blocks more than all others. One very close race was with an AAR Cuda ,and without skipping second he would've taken me . I always wanted to run that Camaro again but never saw him on the street again . Any big blocks were toast if they had an automatic .Worst race was with a Porsche . It was high speed on the highway and I'm lucky I'm alive after that run . 😎

In '77 my girlfriend had a '70 SS 350 Camaro, same color as this. In my neighborhood a guy had a yellow one this body style, NOT stock. He was always on it. We would hear him coming to the stop sign at our corner. We would run to watch. He would launch, it would dig in and the front wheels would go in the air. One day I saw a cop happily driving it, and him in the back of the cop car following. I think the cop just wanted a chance to drive it. LOL.

My 70`s buddy had a 70 Z28, silver, black stripes, stick and stock. The 350 needed work so ol Walter let motor head Rodney down the block TRADE HIM his LT1 for a standard 327 which Rodney installed. So I know how at least one copy does not have matching numbers. silly silly boy. p.s. I thought my other friends stock yellow/ black stripes 69 Chevelle SS 396 stick, meats/Cragers/jacked up was sweater. But Frank`s burgundy 69 Z28 was the real screamer. That puppy pinned you in the seat. I drove a modded 67 Chevelle SS, stick. FAST but kinda scary because even then the suspension and handling were straight line only. Car felt like it floated. Steven`s black 67 SS El Camino with cammed 427 and TH400,,, broke loose to easy. MY BIGGEST CAR REGRET EVER was not ever getting my heart`s true love affair, the 1969 440 Road Runner. Motor Trend 1969 Car Of The Year. What`s his names 72 yellow Duster 340 stick impressed me in a test ride. Then what`s his name had a Dodge Coronet 440, pretty good. Rick had a 69 Cougar, nice actually. I bought a 73 Javelin, cheap ca-ca from Cal Worthington in Long Beach, mistake! I liked my 72 240Z much better WINDER. Those were the dddaaayyysss my friend, I thought they`d never end, the days of long hair, hot rods and chicks. Then came custom Vans. Then came lifted 4WD Trucks. I bought a 77 Land Cruiser new $4,470. OH and Danny was building a flip front end 57 Chevy, stick. It was running pretty strong. TIME MACHINE PLEASE! Rory had this silver Mazda rotary engine small car (not RX7) F.A.F. too! Debbie had this beautiful 69 Camaro 350 stick, cragers, green interior, metallic green paint. I LOVED THAT CAR!

The chrome knob was for the console cars. The console-delete cars had a black knob with a white 4spd pattern. The console was absolutely available on the z/28.

I had a 71 RS. I loved that car. It saw 110 at least 5 times a week. The car was a marvelous handling car. After over 245 cars I would say for safety and stability at high speeds it was the best. Over a hundred miles an hour I don't want to be in anything less than 3200 lb.

I have owned 2 1970 Camaro's. The first was the rare SS 396 L-78. It was numbers matching and featured in Muscle car review back in 1994. My second and present one is the other BB camaro. SS 396 L-34. The Z-28 is nice, but I just like the semi-hemi BB Chevy engines. I changed to bigger sway bars with poly bushings, and polyurethane subframe bushings. And Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires and it handles pretty well . This car also is numbers matching.

Yes it handles pretty well. I have never driven a Z-28, so I do not know if it handles as well with all the suspension upgrades. I will replace the Delco shocks with Bilsteins in front and KYB's in rear.

Sorry for long delay. I do not think you could gt striping or Z-28 wheels from the factory. But I took off the 14 x 7 inch wheels and put on Z-28 wheels on my L-78. But kept all original parts when I sold it.

This is my favorite Camaro....from nose to tail-end, this car had the looks that have not been topped in Chevrolet styling. The LT-1 option was the best engine (350) that they put out. I used an LT-! 350 with the Muncie, an upgraded cam/headers/double-pumper in my Nova. Paired with a 5:56 rear axle it made me some money on the street and in bracket racing......but, the gear was hard to live with on the street. Would shift just shy of 7000 and went thru the lights at 7200.

My first car was a 70 1/2 Z 28.i can still remember the DPS officer's face when I showed up for my driving test in this car. Solid lifters rattling and four speed transmission. I bought this car from my brother; he had to have a GT 350 Mustang so he sold the Camaro to me. The best thing is I still have the car and the high school reputation form it.

Had a new 1973 Z28, with the L82 350ci. It got the AIR system removed, an Edelbrock Manifold, Hooker headers with sidepipes, Holley double pumper and ran low 13s. It would have looked better withthe RS RPO split bumper, bit it was an eye-catcher enough with Motion Performance Hood, and glassed-in rear duck tail spoiler. With a stage II Kenne-Bell tranny, it was fun to drive, as the original wide oval tires enabled precise p0wer U-turns at 50 mph.

I've always had trouble with the statement 'largest engine for Camaros pre-1971 was a 402, because as early as 1968, Fred Gibb had learned how to use the COPO system to build whatever he wanted and sell them in bulk later (after racing them). Now, granted, the 1969 ZL-1 Camaros bit him in the arse pretty-hard after GM priced them higher than Corvettes, but THEY WERE GM-FACTORY BUILT! PROOF that the COPO was a channel to 'get whatever you wanted'. I've seen TWO LS-7 1970 Camaros in my lifetime, that I am CERTAIN were OEM! Don't say 'never happened', unless you were there and saw it.

LS7's were over the counter only. Never put into a production car. However, you should check out the Baldwin Motion camaros. They had Phase I,II, and III options with 454's. He also did the extremely rare Hone Overdrive option. It was a low and high gear setup. Baldwin did these conversions as well as The Yenko camaros by Don Yenko. Yenko did 427's and he did Lt 1's in Nova's and he did Vega's,Chevelles and Corvairs. There was also Nickey performance and a few others. Check them out.

Bumperette holes are in the rear valance ready to mount. To bring up to more original, add correct valve covers, shifter knob, fan shroud, chrome tail pipes, phosphate hood hinges for starters...still a beautiful car!

I’m a Jag guy and I see two commonalities, maybe three: the headlights “flowing” into the fender and hood; and the curved rocker panels that tuck underneath the body, like an airplane's fuselage. (Jaguar's head design head in the ‘50s and ‘60s began his career designing aircraft.) I guess the prominent free-standing grille could be considered another shared design theme.

69 and 70 camaros both have a 108 inch wheel base. Curb weight is about 3500 lbs not over 4K.

Gotta correct you on the numbers; The 1970 Z28 with a 350cui LT1 had a curb weight of 3,278-3,340 lbs, not freakin 3,800 :P The 396 (402cui L78) SS also had 375 hp in 1970, and weighed 3,500 lbs.

In my opinion, the LT1 (gen-1) was the best of the best old school Chevy small block produced. With that said, there were other SM Chevy killer motors. 1) 1967-1969 Z28 302. Same as the LT1 but with a 3" stroke instead of a 3.48" stroke. 2) 1964-1965 365 HP 327 Corvette. Same specs as the LT1 except it had a 3.25" stroke. 3)1965-1968 corvette 327 350 HP. like the 365 but with a Hydraulic cam. All these engines were awesome.

Almost, but no cigar. The Lt1 350 used the 0010 block as did the '69 302. The '68-'67 302 was based on the 327 small journal block. So the 69 had a one year only lrg journal 3" stroke crank. but, the 350 debut was 1968 so why didn't GM use that block? maybe they weren't set up to produce a forged 3 inch stroke (large journal) to make what became the DZ 302 the following year.

Aldo. I had this argument 40 years ago with a child hood friend, and his parents bought a 68 Impala SS. The new styled grill, bumpers and interior came out in 67 1/2 and ran 18 mo. And they had the 350 only in the SS , according to his dad. Ergo, you assume the same was a option in the 67 Camaro SS, but only half way through the model year. I know there's alot of conjecture on the subject... Peace.

A lot of people don't know about '67 SS350 Camaro's. All '67 SS Camaro's and SS/RS came with a 350. My SS/RS was built in Nov. 1966 and was a 295 HP 350. 396 was also available but L78 (and TH400) not until much later in model year.

Well I think the second generation Camaros are some of the best that were ever made and I don't mean any disrespect to the first generation I like all of them 67 68 69 but I just really love the Gen 2 in fact I've had multiple I had a 70 Z28 I also had a 71 RS with a transplanted big block that came out of a 70 Chevelle and although my favorite cars are the 70 Buick GS and 68 Plymouth GTX the 70s Z28 and the highest HP ranking 402 SS cars are very close behind

ever seen the full spoiler kit on a second gen camero i have one it is a 79 z28 rs t top with the full spoiler kit first one i have ever seen even on the net and it is on the option sheet from factory .it has spoilers in front and behind all wheels like the trans am but a little different on the shape of the spoilers

They were sold with L78's. They also had the L89 option with identical specs to the L78 but with aluminum heads. Super rare.

I may get flamed for this but I have never been a fan of the 70+ body styles although I do like the new Camaros. My favorites were the '67 and '68 SS/RS Camaros and I also liked the '69. I like Camaros in a lot of colors, especially red and orange. But I've never been a fan of green cars. I liked how the '70 Z-28 performed although my friend's old '67 SS/RS with the L-78 396 was quicker - a beautiful red SS/RS with the white SS stripe kit and the RS hide away headlights.

I had a 1979 Z28. I put a 455 horse power in it, and back in the 80s I had the fastest car. Its such a sham, that I had to sell it, cause the price of the gas went up. Car like mines wouldnt survive in todays generation. Yuppers its a gas quzzler.

The higher the compression, the more power you get, to a certain point. Detonation will occur if your ratio is too high (on gasoline. Diesel engines have around 22 to 1 compression, where this Z-28 has 11 to 1

Technically it's the volume of the cylinder at BDC divided by the volume of the cylinder at TDC; higher comp ratios are required with longer duration camshafts to make up for the loss of dynamic compression.

Also the SS/RS was also a sweet CAMARO. That's why i think that CHEVY is the Automotive company. It might NOT be the first.. But it's the best. Like.in 1970 the LS6 454.. They say it had 450 HP. But REALLY had 500 HP AND 500 FP of torque. REALLY had the most HP out of any CAR manufacturers..
