Check out one of the street kings: the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28! This legendary muscle car isn't just about good looks - it's packed with high-performance parts that made it a force to be reckoned with on the track and the drag strip.
In this episode of Muscle Car Of The Week, we dive deep into what makes the 1968 Z/28 so special:
The heart of a tiger: Under the hood lies a free-revving 302ci small-block Chevy engine that punches far above its weight class. Forget the factory 290hp rating - this beast was dyno-tested at much closer to 350hp!
Performance everywhere you look: From the chrome air cleaner and aluminum intake manifold to the solid camshaft and deep-groove pulleys, the Z/28 was built for speed.
Handling that tames the power: Special suspension components like stiffer springs, staggered shocks, and an oversized front sway bar keep this muscle car glued to the pavement, even when you're pushing the limits.
15-inch rally wheels: The only first-gen Camaro to wear these iconic wheels, giving the Z/28 an aggressive stance and improved handling.
Classic good looks: The Butternut Yellow paint with racing stripes is pure 1960s muscle car eye candy, and the flat hood (a Z/28 signature) adds to its timeless appeal.
This isn't just a car, it's a piece of muscle car history. Whether you're a gearhead looking for your next project or a car lover who appreciates the classics, the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is a must-have.

These were one of the really cool motors from those days. Most iron relied on more iron to get it done. The 289s, 283s, and 302s when done right were the most fun. It wasn't rocket science to stiffen up a chassis, and "Street Stocks" were bad ass cars with small blocks. My best friends sisters BF had a 67 Z28. Best ride of all of them. Better than my 390 Mustang.

290 seemed to be the magic number for all 3 major makes for the street T /A cars....the Boss 302, Z/28 and 340 6pk all were rated at 290bhp.

My buddy has a January 1967 built 1968 Z28. It only had the Z28 badge on the dash from factory. No outside badges. Or it was a Z28 RS with the only RS badge on the dash and not on the outside. Something like that. Supposed to be rare.

Wrong about the 4 bolt mains. 67 Z28s had a small journal crank with 2 bolt mains, 68 Z28s had a stronger large journal crank with again 2 bolt mains. 69 Z28s had large journal crank and 4 bolt mains. The specs submitted to SCCA for the 302 were actually about 550 HP in race trim. I have all the SCCA specs somewhere. Cowl induction hood was an option for 1969 only. You could also get a cold air package for all 3 years drawing air from the windshield cowl panel.

A buddy had a 68 z28, paid $2,700 new, he changed the 4.88 posi rear axle, to over 8.00 - people say Chevy didn't make a rear like that, I believe a 3rd party did. When he'd 40 mph the speedometer showed 80. It roared.

That 302 Chevy small block was an angry, nasty little V8. No doubt in my mind they had to be making far more horsepower than the 290 hp factory rating

Legendary car/engine builder Smokey Yunick ( from early NASCAR, Indy, and Trans Am racing, among others ), Roger Penske, and a couple others were tweaking these DZ 302 Chevy's and getting around 450 hp!!! You can look that up. You will hear many Ford guys claim that the Chevy 302 Z28 "was a real dog"......but that's nonsense, because most guys who ordered the Z28 Camaro's back in the day was treated to a trick thought up by the Chevy dealers, and that was factory correct high performance parts already sitting in the trunk of these cars if ya paid a little extra for them, wherein the owner or the dealer could install them, and STILL be considered "factory original".....This is one of the ways they beat the insurance companies, to keep auto ins rates down. These 302's were already prepared at the factory to be able to take those high performance parts ya simply swapped out, and then they ran like hell, and could beat engines that were far larger. When properly built & equipped, the big bore/short stroke of these DZ 302 Chevy small blocks could easily rev to 8,000 rpm's and beyond. That is a fact. Amazing for a normally aspirated engine back then.

GM dyno'd the 302 in '67, '68. With the 800 cfm Holley, 30/30 cam, transistorized ignition and equal length dyno headers, they pulled right at 448 hp at 7400 rpm. This was not the Traco tuned race engine either. This was the same engine that was being installed in the street cars. The Traco tuned engines were basically ultra balanced and blueprinted factory engines with head porting and flow bench work done. Those engines would produce around 460 hp and live for very long periods at 7800 to 8200 rpm with the cross ram intake, and "140" GM racing cam. The cross ram built torque above 7500 rpm when used with the "140" cam. The factory rating of 290 hp was actual hp, at 5800 rpm. The 302's needed 4.56 or 4.88 gears on the street.

@@howabouthetruth2157 the only option that came in the trunk was factory headers in 67 n 8 only.they weren't available in 69. Not sure why...a stock 302 with headers puts out around 403 HP. The engine already had a lot of goodies installed...the heavy duty parts that became available over the counter was the GM crossram setup and the 140 off road racing cam...no dealer would install them thou...when tuned correctly these motors put out in excess of 465 HP. This is why they won the trans am circuit in 68 n 69, yes beating the Ford 302....not sure what gears they used probably 488's. Trans would have to be tweaked to wide ratio if the car didnt have an M20 in it...😁 I Love U.S. and A.!

Recently saw a dyno shootout between a bone stock DZ 302 and a bone stock BOSS 302. The DZ peaked at 357 horses at 7000 or 7200 rpm and the BOSS peaked at 374 horses at the same rpm. I'm a Mopar guy primarily but I love both of those small blocks. Personally I always liked the Mopar big blocks the best but when it came to small blocks Chevy built the best in my opinion. The fuel injected 283/327, the L79 327, the DZ 302, and the 1970 LT1 350 were all screamers. Ford had some great small blocks too like the K-Code 289, the BOSS 302, and a few different versions of the 351. I especially like the Ford BOSS 351. I love the Mopar 340 but that was really all they had as far as high performance small blocks. The earlier 273 made decent power but they weren't on the same level as some of the Chevy and Ford small blocks in those days

Kevin,What is your take on the GTO little brother the LeMans with a 326CU.IN. v-8 I had one in 1967 trim convertible. She was an awesome machine that friends swore I put a bigger motor in they said it was too mean for a small cube engine. Could you do a review on one of these GTO pretenders.

Pontiac was the leader in high performance back then and had lots of good stuff the 326 was a great motor they experimented with over head cam inline sixes with four barrels and duel exhaust a split rear-ended four cyilinder four cyilinder that did 12 sec passes may have been an early tempest k think but Pontiac led the charge at the track I myself used to have any 455 Pontiac motors that came to my local junkyard saved for me I put them in everything even a Chevy pickup that could not be beat even by a high dollar small block build my junkyard 455 made it look like a POS lol he had 2000 in his motor I had 150.00 and three more to replace it when it blew which was not often

Not a Z/28 story, just a story about a 302 or 2...... A stop light, a random mustang with a tool behind the wheel, and a cute soon to be ex gf in the passenger seat. A rusty , moldy, really , really, ugly, two tone blue S10 blazer in the lane next to it. The mustang was just washed and has shiny stuff on the tires. The blazer has never been washed, and has a 69 DZ 302 with dart heads, vic jr intake, and a 850 double pumper under the hood...It has a T5 5 speed with a hays comp clutch , 4:11 gears , a detroit locker, iroc rear disc brakes, shift on the fly 4x4 with a posi lock.. it has huge school bus mufflers with exaust all the way out the back to keep it quiet and kill the solid lifter cam chop... The light turns green, the blazer revs the engine , but slips the clutch so the teeth are not ripped off the 7.5 inch ring and pinion and the stock 26 spline axles splines don't twist inside the detroit locker that cost more then the whole truck...The mustang leaves next to the blazer but looses ground at the 1-2 shift as the blazer revs clean past 8,000 rpms.. By 3rd gear things are not looking good for the mustang. The driver and his girl must watch as rust and mud fall from the blazer at each shift as no mercy is given to the blazers poor t5 and 7.5 10 bolt in third and fourth gear. Luckily for the mustang it has fallen behind far enough to avoid the mud and rust falling off the really, really, ugly blazer... The shiny tires of the mustang manage to avoid the mud and rust, for any moisture that was previously found between the legs of the cute mustang owners girlfreind, there is no escaping it... Sorry if you were a victim , it wasn't personal..
