Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #190: 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 427 4-Speed R-Code V8TV
#musclecar #v8tv
www.musclecarof...
/ musclecaroftheweek
This is one of those cars that sets your imagination on fire. A long, Raven black ‘64 Ford Galaxie 500 that glistens like a prize fighter in the ring, with a heart just as big. Ford was good at building big and comfy family cars, but they also did a heck of a job stripping them down into racing versions, like our R-code version with it’s 425 HP 427 powerplant. From The Brothers Collection.

One of the best looking full sized Fords of all time. I was a sophomore in high school when a Ford identical to this one, same package, same black, lit up the street in front of the school. Blew my socks off. My dad was one of the top Ford salesmen in the country for decades, in fact he won a 1958 Thunderbird for being thee TOP salesman in the country that year. He would always bring home the latest and greatest of the new Fords. I remember a 57 black Thunderbird he brought home. The first Mustang out...man that was a blast to drive...when I could steal the keys for it. But the lines on the '64 are memorable. Literally...lots of memories. Thanks...DAD! RIP

What raises your show above the other musclecar series is the quality of the research and the writing. In just a few minutes you convey what makes a car like the one in this episode unique. We motorheads appreciate your hard work.

You asked, I'll tell. I was born just about the month that 4-27 came out. 4-27-1964. Harbor City, Better Known as Long Beach California. This car was sorta built for the California mindset. Nomatter what anybody says, it is.. Its one of my favorite examples of The "Muscle Car Decade". Bigger than life, Galaxie 427 4 spd, 9" posi. For today, only thing I would change is going from FE to 429-460 and stroke to a 555 or larger. Aluminum top end, puts the whole thing about the same weight with inexpensive parts and giant torque down low. I already have the Big Block Toploader, hardest quality part to get. The rest is easy to put together. The new Ford big block can turn 6-7000K all day if built right, but who needs to with 3:20 rear end and 30" tall10-12" wide 20's on the back? Cruising at 85 all day purring up Central Valley from Bakers Field to Shasta on 5 is a beautiful thing. Or out across Indiana through the corn where I live these days. Raising kids out here just makes far more sense.

Great car. The distributor on the 406 and 427 were dual point centrifugal advance. These distributors had two sets of points. Also, the dual 4 barrel setup came with 11.5 compression whereas the single 4 barrel model had flat top pistons with 12.0 compression. We ran a red and white model with 10 inch slicks would snatch the wheels over a foot of the line.

Tried to buy one of these as I left the USAF in Alabama. They would not even talk to me about it. Ended up with a Galaxie 500xl. Beauty but the 390 300 was a slug. Just too heavy for that motor and valves too easy to float. Went to a 4:11 rear that gave it a little help, however a 1965 GTO put me where I wanted to be. That Ford had the best interior of any car I have ever owned.

Awesome Car...Got to remember some of those cars were used to make an illegal living, as a 10 or 12 year old growing up in the North Georgia Mountains a very fond memory of mine would be when one of these would come weekly in the summer and fall of each year and load it down with their run and my Dads pride and joy, they used cars like this because they would be chased with cars like these....and they would hold a helloa lot Liquor!

At 17 I was only a starry eyed dreamer back then but it sparked a flame in my heart that has lived ever after. Nice to have these episodes of MCOTW to remind us of how it used to be. Back in the early sixties we(our family) had a 4 door Galaxie that looked just like this except ours wore the 390 instead of 427 badge. With 300 hp, it was "lively" when it was time to "pass" slower traffic on the road. Ours was black like this with a medium grey interior. I wasn't driving yet when we had this car, but I would have loved to have "road tested" it! From a standing start, the car would chirp the tires when shifting from 1st to 2nd, using the "Cruise O Matic" tranny. It was such a pretty car.

Would be even cooler if it had the XL interior . I bought a 64 galaxy in 1973 in Pennsylvania. The fenders we so rusted you could not even sit on the them. I'm amazed any of these Fords are still around and did not rust to pieces. Mine had a 352 in it and I bought it from Yenko Chevy in Canonsburg for $100.00 . It had the XL interior .

The finished metal used to make cars back then was pretty crappy compared to today's metal, which makes these cars much rarer than the cars from today0
@kenbarnes8958
@kenbarnes8958 Жыл бұрын
@@scarea2691 The metal was the same only thicker (different parts of the body use different alloys.) The difference is the rust protection they use now. In 68 they really cranked up the rust protection. I worked at Ford in those days. Everything corrodes in Penn. A friend had a 10 year old Toyota truck in Penn. and the frame rusted completely into.

I had a 63 with a 390 a 64 with a 390 and my last 64 Galaxie 500 XL had a 406 Interceptor that came out of a 62 State Police Cruiser. It was modded with a med rise cast iron intake and a single 780 cfm Holley with the cast iron factory headers and a 3/4 Isky cam. It had a 3 speed on the floor with Overdrive and a 9" rear with 3.25 gears. Closs black and red bucket XL interior that was well worn but comfortable and still very functional. @@trevorwilson5461 The Ford 427 SOHC is the baddest big block ever to come out of Detroit and I'm a Mopar guy. They were rated by Ford at 615 horsepower with a 4 barrel and 657 horses with dual quads. That kind of horsepower and torque in a car with bias ply tires and 1960's steering, brake, and suspension technology would've been downright dangerous so it's probably for the better that Ford never put the Cammer into any regular production cars. Ford did install a few SOHC's in full size Galaxie's to use as test cars but other than that the Cammer was only sold as an aftermarket crate engine

Car looks amazing! My mom said she had one back in the day, though I'm not sure if it had the same specs as this one. One thing I wonder, though...why does it smoke so much? I even notice it leaves sooty spots on the ground at certain points (something I haven't even seen most diesels do), and this isn't the only Galaxie 500 I've seen do this. Did these engines just run rich or burn oil or something? Weird question, I know, but I haven't seen most other kinds of cars do this, especially not with the spots on the ground.
