Hi guys! In this video we're going to go over the NIH MRC Muscle grading scale. This scale will help us communicate effectively with our medical team on our patients status.
This is called the MRC scale or medical research council which is the institution that sets up the standard for muscle testing.
The strength is categorized on a scan from 0-5
Lets do a live demonstration to live demonstration to learn the scale.
Grade zero - no muscle contraction is seen or felt with assessment.
Grade 1 - The muscle can contract and movement can be seen or felt, however, it is not enough to move the joint or extremity.
Grade 2 - The muscle can move the joint through full range of motion if gravity is eliminated.
Grade 3 - The muscle can move through a full range of motion against gravity, but not against resistance.
Grade 4 - The muscle can move the joint it crosses through a full range of motion against moderate resistance.
Grade 5 - The muscle can move the joint through a full range of motion, against gravity and against full resistance applied by the examiner.
