1969 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Muscle Car Of The Week Video #98
This week, we're taking a look at a very rare 1969 Oldsmobile 442 with the W-30 Outside Air Induction setup. It's also one of only a few built that were originally sold in Canada. From the Brothers Collection.

@@charlesbennett9461 all 68 and 69 Olds 442s came with BRONZE painted engines, not red. The 455 in the Hurst Oldsmobiles however were red. The GOLD colored engines (like in this video) were the 350 Cu In. Engines. After rewatching this video it has #5 heads 3:37 which guarantees that this car now has a 350 Cu. In engine in it. Lots of issues with this car. The steering wheel is incorrect, the shift ball is incorrect. He states it came with an AM radio which according to the documentation he shows it originally did, but this one has the AM/FM radio in it (far more rare - probably swapped out to AM/FM later). Edelbrock intake not standard, chrome valve covers wrong, chrome oil fill cap wrong. Chrome brake master cylinder cover wrong. Power Brakes NEVER came on W-30s. Exhaust manifolds wrong - never came with headers. W27 rear end came out in 1970 not 1969 and it has the wrong bolts for the W27. Just a few problems i saw with this car in the video. a NICE car no doubt, but with all the problems i see i have my doubts with this car. Most LIKELY its a standard 442 made into a 442 W-30 These days there are FARRRRR more "W-30s" on the road than were EVER made by GM

In the ‘60s, Oldsmobile were the quintessential big American car. They occupied the middle ground between basic-transportation Chevies and pretentious old-guy Caddies. Oldsmobile were arguably the most adventurous GM division. Their front-wheel-drive 1966 Toronado was one of the most beautiful full-sized cars of the era. I was a teenager growing up in Ontario Canada and remember our family lawyer's Olds 98, how lavish its interior was and its enormous size. At age 19 I got to drive a '68 442 with Hurst 4-speed. I was accustomed to driving European manual transmissions, and shifting the Hurst was in comparison like rowing a paddle in a cement mixer. But when I got on the gas, that big car would dig in and go. Truly this was the golden age of American cars, and I’m glad I grew up when I did.

"Oldsmobile were arguably the most adventurous GM division". The late John DeLorean and his Poncho Division would vociferously disagree with you. The '69 and '70 W30 442's (with both 4's) were awesome cars but the '69 Grand Prix SJ in Triple Black (leather interior) and 4 on the floor is a magnificent creation. A '72 Trans Am equipped with the 455HO and a four speed manual just might smoke a W30 442 as well as being the Holy Grail of T/A's, even without T-tops.

I remember the first one of these W30 optioned 442 I saw when I was trying to finish up college and very broke. I rolled out from under my '57 Ford (with T-Bird motor, cam, headers, and every upgrade I could throw at it) in the college parking lot. I had realized the the '57 was getting long in the tooth; but the sight of this Olds almost made me throw my wrenches in disgust when I looked at that beauty! And they sounded and moved as good as they looked.....I always thought the body style was timeless; still do. Thanks Kevin

Mopar man here but what a beautiful car. Nice comfortable car to drive and a great performer too. Always felt like GM muscle cars had the best fit and finish out of the big three, but Mopar had the best high performance drivelines. The 69 W30 is probably my favorite 442 of any of them. Also loved the 68 Hurst/Olds

Nice car, I had a 69 442 in High school,it was gold with a white vinyl top,had the 400 cu in block 4 speed & post track differential,& I raced everyone I could.back in the day gas was cheap, cruising in a small town was always cool, wish I had kept it,now I’m older & always look through Craig’s list hoping to find even a shell to put together again. I had put a crane fireball cam,Holley 650 & Headman headers, with some purple Hornies on it,it was loud & sounded tough, dang I need to find another one.ok later guys.

Mopar guy here but man what a beauty. 1969 was definitely the best looking 442 ever although most people favor the 1970 442 because the 455 with its 500 lb/ft of torque replaced the 400 that year. I still prefer the 1968 and 69 442 and Hurst/Olds models over the 70-72 models. I especially like the 69 Hurst/Olds but I never liked the fact that they didn't offer a 4 speed manual trans as an option. They all got the TH400 automatic

I bought new a 69 442. 350 hp, four speed with 3:73 posi. It was Saffron yellow with black vinyl top and interior with black stripes. It came with red line tires and factory mags, am/fm radio. It was fast and handled well and like the video said, it had a great sound. Oh, by the way, I traded in a 66 442 holiday coupe, 4speed, tri-power that was autumn bronze, with black vinyl top, factory tac, bronze interior, factory mags. It too was fast! I loved both of them.

Phil Hand read your comment and thought this might interest you! My ex father in law bought a brand new 1970 ss396 after graduation in1970. He wanted the ls6 but just couldn't afford it. About a month goes by n it was stolen from out front of house. So with insurance money his mom felt bad n loaned him the rest to buy the ls6 4sp black with white stripes n a black vinyl top. He still has the car unmolested and in excellent condition with approximately 8500 miles! He now drives it to local car shows and the miles are creeping up. In the late 70s he put 456 gears in it but last summer put stock 410s back in. Other than a door dinger here n a small scrath there its a beauty!!! Love to see what it would bring at Barrett Jackson!!! Lol I like your choice of cars. My buddy had a 69 442 thats why your comment popped! Thanks for your time

Great car! I owned a ‘68 Ram Air 400 cu in 4-4-2, 4 speed, Car was awesome! Also owned a ‘65 4-4-2 convertible and the Last Year 1984 Hurst Olds {something like 3400 built) NO POWER, only 205 HP but looked awesome and the “Lightning Rods” shifters! When I purchased that car not even the Salesman knew how to shift it into Park, unique shift pattern, NO WAY you could miss the gear you wanted to shift into, never hit Reverse, Park, or Neutral when Drag Racing manually shifting! Missed the 1983 W30, 455 cu in, the year before! Sad😢

Always liked the design of the 68-69 GM A-bodies better than any other mid size GM body styles.... particularly the 68-69 GTO. But the Chevelle SS396, Olds 442, and Buick GS400 we're all bad ass examples of classic American Muscle. It's too bad the EPA ruined the muscle car era in the early 70s. By 1975 you couldn't buy a fast American car. The 74 Pontiac Trans Am 455SD was the last true muscle car of the true muscle car era. Great times to be a gearhead

There was also a '69 W-30 in Victoria BC back in the day - it had bench seats and a column mounted automatic - weird - but the exterior had white rally stripes on the hood. I was crazy about that car, hanging out at Dairy Queen hoping the guy who owned it would turn-up in the parking lot - a few years later, I spotted it being street-raced - pretty beaten-up and sounding like it had been thrashed one too many times.

Divorce screwed my restoration plans and I sold to a guy for pennies on the dollar, he finished it and when he was done it was gorgeous! unfortunately he installed a W30 cam and the engine did not like it, that black on red combo is beautiful!

I'm glad you mentioned that they were factory blueprint motors.. I like the way you mentioned the power breaks becouse on mine I did not have enough vacume to operate the power booster.... But I had a single plane Torker intake.... Good looking car thanks for the information on that unit...🤔🇨🇦👍

What I think about that 442 is I would love to have it. I also had a couple of '66 442's as well which I liked even more than the '69. Too bad I was too young and stupid to know what I had at the time.

That's a tease. How about an update on this one? You talked about how good it sounded at idle but didn't let us hear it idle? The sounds of the cars are a major reason for watching this show.

Always loved the Oldsmobile still have my first 1964 Oldsmobile F-85 and also had a 1969 442. GM stopped making the Oldsmobile so I don't by GM products anymore.
