MUSE, The Cosmic Time Machine

The 35-minute documentary explores the inspiration and the story behind MUSE, the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer installed at ESO’s Very Large Telescope. The film was produced by CNRS Images, in partnership with ESO. The film project was led by Roland Bacon, Principal Investigator of the MUSE project, and directed by Christophe Gombert and Claude Delhaye.

At 6:24 it says that the derotator compensates for the Earth's rotation. This is not what the derotator does; it keeps the image from the telescope vertically aligned as the telescope tracks/slews. I tried to find a nice writeup or diagram but couldn't.

Stupid question, but what's the problem with the Sun hitting the main mirror ? (14:45) Is it that it would concentrate the beams and potentially burn stuff, or does the Sun could damage the surface in some way ?

enogael Well, the VLT mirrors have a diameter of 8.2m and are of best quality. The sun hits earth with an energy of average ~1400 W/m2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpObZ4Kwe8qojtE That video should give you a glimpse idea what danage already a small surface of sunlight well focused can do.
