It's just always been funny to me how luke warm you've been about some of their performances just because that's really how they got so big. They win awards specifically for live performances in a bunch of countries. They have great music imo, but their live performance was always one of the best. I guess just luck of the draw with the recordings. This energy level and engagement is more what I am used to from seeing them live through the years. I knew it was only a matter of time before you finally came across a performance like this, and it happened to me one of my favorite Muse songs.

I really don't get why a Muse fan would say the band was focusing only on the music.They've always had a lot of stage presence. Even in the concert of the song you reacted to, they've been knee sliding and flipping around while playing riffs for for 2 hours. I believe they just make a choice depending on the song they're playing at the moment. This being said, you should react to their version of Bliss at Le Zenith (Paris). Keep it up!
@wewantthecup
@wewantthecup 2 жыл бұрын
I got Bliss from Royal Albert Hall 2008 in his queue, which is also a great rendition. I chose it because it's a bit more refined (which I know doesn't equate to being 'better') while still matching the intensity of Le Zenith. And because David already did Micro Cuts from the Le Zenith gig.

@@wewantthecup I agree that the Royal Albert Hall is sonically better (it's one of my favourite performances of the song). Just wanted to see Dave's reaction to the ending of Bliss, and the Wolstenhug at the end 😂😂 but very good choice mate! 🤝

It was like 2001, either or... I was like Whooooooooooooo is that sexy bass player? But anyhow, Chris has always been my favorite member. He is such a kick-ass Bass player, and his Backing vocals are so angelic! He puts ALOT of energy into the performances as well... ALWAYS got his headbanging !

Its a good muse song, but the audio recording of this particular performance is so bad in my opinion, it's from 2009 so it should be great, but something is off technically, not the bands performance but the audio recording is just awful compared to most others, I've heard better cell phone recordings than this. Have a great day everyone. Glad you enjoyed the song David!

Love Muse, fantastic reviews as always. But one thing I will say, Muse are known for their showmanship. They literally have the greatest live shows of all time. Matt literally is incredible when it comes to crowd interaction and such. If you watch some of their bigger shows, it's genuinely incredible, especially in the Simulation Theory era.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thiiink the video you watched of Muscle Museum where they didn't have much stage presence was from really early in their career. They were quite shy/introverted guys back then. They only really came out of their shell on stage when they became a stadium filling level band in the late 2000s and the band reached a whole new level of live performance because of it. It's quite a similar story with Dave Grohl. Now he effortlessly interacts with the crowd, but in the early years of Foo Fighters he was kinda quiet and awkward. Some people have natural stage presence from day one, but for Dave and Matt I think they both had to learn how to do it.
@nerea4327

In that Wembley performance they were a lot more tight cause it was their first live DVD and their first Wembley performance so probably they were nervous and simply focusing on playing well. It's actually pretty weird because Muse are known for their live performances and Matt is known for being a great entertainer and making the weirdest guitar moves. He actually interacts quite a lot with the audience. Watch Starlight or Follow Me from Rome 2013, he spends all the time with the crowd. He even goes off stage to touch and hug fans during Undisclosed desires.

I am a Muse purist. Favourite band by far. And I agree with you on the crowd interaction. They CAN do it. And they SHOULD do it. It makes the song that much more important and meaningful to have everyone join in. It's what completes a live performance. What Muse do live is what makes them amazing. Their crowd interaction is on point, whether that's fist bumps, getting them to sing, or having them jump up and down in time. So all of those so-called muse purists saying they don't NEED to do that, aren't Muse purists 😎

Who is always suggesting these live Performances with mediocore/bad audio? You guys gotta remember that when someone hears a song for the first time and the audio is like that, the true potential of the song goes away I love that Song, but if I would hear it for the first time and then live I wouldnt care at all and maybe even dont like the song at all, maybe the intro riff and thats it lol

If I am not mistaken Muse and Matt to be precise started trying to incorporate crow interaction starting from The Resistance. I believe it was due to it being their biggest hit in the US up to that point and as such having more concerts here. Since they were used to the European crowds that tend to be more active going to the US found them in need hyping the crow up with more that just music. Matt would even go down the stage during the T2L tour and shake/high five front row fans, I was lucky enough to get a handshake! With that said, I personally don't see the need to have them do anything in order for me to fully enjoy the song. Its not like if Matt doesn't point up during the "No one is going to take me alive" part of KoC I am not going to do it, I just do it because that's what the music/lyrics make do. Same with the chorus of TiRO, I jump because of the music. I value sound quality over visual stimulation, Do I want Matt to sing with passion and enthusiasm? For sure. Does he need to be around the whole stage for me to feel like he is putting up a show? No They started using more stage theatrics, using Drones having a giant inflatable character, Murphy, come out and be something cool to look at. Is all that a good visual experience? Sure. Would I trade it for a more simple stage with 1 or 2 more songs? In a heartbeat But at the end, I'm glad there is a side of Muse live that you at least get to enjoy

You are one my all time favourite people for saying the stuff you do re: showmanship. I was walking away from an acdc gig and there were a bunch of guys who were talking about the support acts being shit. Know what their MAIN criticism was? "Jesus they sucked, running around all over the place?! Christ guys just stop already its cringe worthy, no one's here for you". I can hear you tearing them a new one about that. Frankly I wish I had a walking frame to hand to em

love the reaction mate! i love the running thing about muse not having good audience intereaction. Its such a coincidence that most of the live ones you've seen of them are where they have no reaction with the crowd. in later parts of the show nowadays the singer puts away the guitar and takes the mic out to center stage and gets the crowd to sing along. even in some performences of starlight he walks beside crowd and hi fives them all. not the most interactive band ever but in recent years have really upped in that regard!

9:19 I mean, yeah... I'm not sure what those people are talking about, because Matt tends to do a lot of stuff like that in live performances. Like, there are probably entire videos you could find on youtube that are compilations of him dancing/jumping/running around the stage and he often does crowd interaction on more well known songs like Starlight and Uprising. Edit: After listening to the rant at the end, I can at least see that there was some initial misunderstanding about what consititutes a "good live performace", in that they meant "a good/great live version of the song" while you meant "a good/great stage 'performance'". And yeah, while the whole "shot out of a cannon" thing is ridiculous, thinking about it, my own critisism of more recent live performances [probably since 2015] is that they've focussed more on "spectacle" in their performances than actually just performing the songs live [in that with pre-programmed parts and choreographed bits, it ends up seeming more like something out of Guitar Hero or Rock Band where it's just a case of hitting the right button/note/thing at the right time than an actual performance] .
@LucasGammer

but 8/10 shows you've seen Matt live he does amazing things, kneels down. runs around the stage, plays guitar on the coast and several angles, there are several shows where the guy plays riffs perfectly while performing in Knee Slide. he makes it seem easy to play guitar and sing at the same time, taking so much breath and easy to play like that, sometimes I think it's playback. OBS: in 2 or 3 other live reactions from them, he bent down knee even more aggressive in micro cuts and you didn't comment. you do a lot of reactions and end up forgetting about the previous shows.

David I just think youve been very unlucky with what live performances you have been reacting too, cause I have zero idea why this has been such a big topic. These "Muse fans" must not have seen a full concert either. This is also the problem with making a conclusion based on a small sample data. Concerts can be 2 hours long, and you're reacting to a small piece of those 2 hours

Last Muse gig I went to in 2016 was amazing. Matt was running about the stage like a maniac throwing his guitar about. I think the fact Matt switched his guitar to the piano which was probably why there was no interaction. Probably concentrating too much on the song itself. Other songs at Wembley were full of crowd interaction. As one person said already, you just got unlucky in noticing that. Good review though!

Who are these people in the comments claiming that Muse doesn’t have to have crowd interaction or great showmanship? Have they ever been to a Muse concert? That’s literally WHAT THEY’RE KNOW FOR! Honestly, this is a pretty typical performance from them. What a bizarre response from commenters. Maybe you’ve happened to see a run of more sedate performances? Anyway, nice reaction. I agree with what you're saying, I saw muse live in belfast in 2017 and it was the best live show I've ever been too. The music and production and stage presence was amazing. But the thing for me that made it amazing was the first song, Matt kept his eyes closed the entire time, stood still and the lighting was dim, and that for some reason just seemed to amaze and hype everyone, it conveyed some sort of confidence. Muse are always the headliners of any festival they play at, and that sort of almost cocky, arrogant style of showmanship just worked unbelievably well, felt more like a show than a festival (for that song) but it worked amazingly well.

Damn I'm surprised that you had a negative view of Muse in terms of showmanship and audience interaction. Matt is usually a stellar frontman that's constantly dancing around, showing off, messing around, etc, and I don't know how Chris' neck is still functional due to how much headbanging he is constantly doing. If they haven't been doing that stuff in some of what you've seen then they should be, but you must've had some unlucky picks for things to watch in the past

They are my IEM's. I use the onstage when I play live. They are Ultimate Ears UE11. Custom molded to my ears, so they literally lock into place in my ears. 4 independent drivers (Bass, Low Mid, High Mid, and Treble) with triple frequency crossover, I can hear the guitar pick scrape across the strings. they are absolutely amazing. Panning can absolutely be pre-programed, just like any other effect. Run all your effects into a hub, which is then controlled by a laptop in conjunction with the click and your tracking. That way all of your effects turn on and off in time with the song exactly where you want them to be. We do the exact same thing with all of our effects, it really makes life easy. We don't have to worry about running back to our stomp boxes or pedal boards every time we have to change effects. We can focus on our performance, stage presence, showmanship, and the crowd. The only effect that is needed onstage is a wah pedal for whoever uses wah.

I've seen Muse 30 times and I honestly don't get where supposed fans would say that they shouldn't have to interact with the crowd (which is surely track dependant, you're hardly going to get much during something like Unintended as opposed to say, Uprising). So much so that the rant, personally, seems a bit too much, kinda detracts from the enjoyment of the video. I understand the gripe but it feels like too much is spent on something that shouldn't even be an issue

I knew this would be worth watching purely based on it being over 40 minutes long. The only thing missing was David giving the finger to all his Muse loving haters as he signed off! Personally I’ve seen Muse 5 times. I’ve seen Matt knee slide around the stage and interact loads. People need to request better videos!

Actually I think you've been out of luck with their live videos because most of the time Matt is a joy to watch on stage. Very entertaining and funny, which is what got me into Muse in the first place!

The people that said that about muse doesn't need to do any showman ship are dumb. They clearly haven't watched enough muse, any live performances I've ever seen they were always active with the crowd and had amazing showmanship. I don't get it

Instead of spending a half hour on complaining about commenters how about you just appreciate the song. Muse are pretty much unanimously considered one of the greatest live performers of all time. Sometimes a song should speak for itself, the strolling around as you say would take away from the musical experience. You’re also criticizing their performances from the beginning of their career, of course they are going to get better over time

That was a great Rant, and justifies the title of "reactions, reviews and rants". Let me tell you why... Ok, no i'm not really going to give you a score or review for that rant (ok, maybe a score - 9.0), it was totally justified and on point. Smack down, mic drop, you win, end of story. Rant today well justified and you can feel totally vindicated. I'd also forgotten a bit about this track and it's great to have a reminder on it. I know i left a comment on that Butterflies and Hurricanes and Wembly video, that I don't think was being too much of a muse apologist but could probably be taken that way. I think can be summarized as "Agree with you but maybe definition of performance a bit narrow here.", though i don't think i was being overly apologetic for the band, and I was a bit surprised that this Wembly show was the one you were being asked to revisit - personally think it's good (played the song a little heavier and including a technically difficult piano interlude, slightly extended for the live show, sounded great, etc), but it did lack crowd engagement and for that they do have better, quite a lot of them as well. The performances from Rome Olympic stadium, much loved by muse fans (does anyone ever request another version of Knights of Cydonia - there's a good reason this is the go-to), same for some of the Glastonbury performances (including back in 2000). They have always had that in their locker and have done this thought their career. There's a song, "Starlight" where in early performances Matt played keys, but this changed to where he stands leading the crowd in clapping to the beat - not sure if this change was so he could engage with the crowd, or because the change to guitar for chorus was awkward, or because morgan joined on keys for live shows, or all these, but it is an example of a change in the way thy play it allowing more crowd engagement. I think they are capable of crowd engagement, are well know for it in fact. However, i also think they are capable of sometimes zoning out and focussing on the music - i don't immediately recall a ton of engagement when i saw them on the Resistance tour, and i love the glastonbury 2017 performance of Globalist, bet it would have been amazing to be there, but this has very little to do with crowd engagement (though matt's clearly "feeling it" and singing/playing with emotion, especially in the 3rd part), it might have a bit to do with the pyrotechnics though. Anyway, Yes, they are totally capable of doing it. Yes, they are capable of having it in mind, yes it improves a show when they do engage and yes in that wembley performance, they didn't really engage with the crowd and in this one they did and it was a better performance. You are right on all counts.

Really confuses me all the muse fans claiming they don't need to have some crowd reaction as they should know they do at every gig just maybe not for that particular song on that set.

It'll always be the same with Muse, especially at this stage in their career. They always have the crowd interactions but they're scattered through 26 songs sets. The later the live performance the more you'll get. As I'm sure plenty have mentioned, Matt is full on hugging the crowd with no guitar at some points these days.

My argument: through camera work and montage you can make different feel of the show. You don't consider that in your reasoning. So maybe the band WAS doing great, but a camera work was bad, or the other way around.

It's good to have an opinion but it's also good to admit when you're wrong. Muse are the best live performing band of the past two decades.If you want to fairly judge their live presence then watch a whole gig! (Rome Olympic Stadium 2013 or Simulation Theory movie) You can't judge them from one song performance where you saw them a bit static. They play 2 hour shows, they're bound to have a couple of songs where they slow things down in terms of stage presence. If you're gonna judge a band, judge them fairly imo. Not criticizing you, just think it's a really big oversight considering they are probably the best performers we've seen in decades!

Your argument makes no sense. I was complimenting them the whole time. I was telling everyone who said they didn't have to have showmanship that they CAN have great showmanship. I did nothing but compliment them the entire video on their stage presence and stage energy. So what am I supposed to apologize for?

@@THEDavidHeretic I'm not talking about this video at all, just in general that you think there are moments where they are not showing great showmanship ( in previous videos) They had nothing special going on in this video to be honest, they are usually much more active and engaging, so to me this sounds a bit weird hearing you praise them so much in this video when it's clearly not one of their most engaging gigs that's all. I'm not trying to stir the pot or anything, i'm just defending the band I love becuase I honestly believe they deserve the title of being the best live performance of the past two decades

I don’t know who was pitching the idea that muse aren’t a ‘state presence’ band or that Bellamy doesn’t do these moments often...I’ve seen Muse live across the world literally dozens of times over the years and the shows are full of this stuff. Just because there’s some live performance songs on KZbin where it doesn’t happen doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen throughout that show. Think maybe ppl got annoyed at the suggestion that muse weren’t a stage presence band because of a song or 2 on KZbin...when they’re one of the biggest live bands in the world largely in part to their show. But anyone saying that muse don’t do this stuff usually is just wrong. Seen it so many times for 20 years in person

This was kinda frustrating to watch. Bit I feel like it shows some ignorance in regards to Muse. They're widely known for their amazing live performances, that's why people always request the live performances. I've seen Muse numerous times, and one main reason is because of the show and performance they put on. That's what they're known for. Chris is even memed for his headbanging. Perhaps the one performances you talk about is lyrically heavy so Matt is stuck at the mic and can't walk around as much. I'm sure there's opportunities for it, however not ever song calls for air punching or jumping about. Some of Muse's songs can be described as love songs for example which it wouldn't fit. They are known for their high energy shows and performances. Not sure what else I can say.

All I did in the whole video was heap praises upon them for their showmanship, and show all the people who said "they don't have to have showmanship" that they cam have it, do it well, amd still play the songs just fine. You missed the entire point of the video. You might want to try watching the video again.
