I make waxed canvas ones, ones made from old scout tents, and embellish them with tartan and tweed. I have so many. A lot like my caps that I have made.

A mussette bag is basically a traditional bit of kit from European militaries (starting in the 17th century): the canvas haversack (which is distinct and different from the rucksack/backpack). Soldiers in the United States carried them in many of the wars they fought in, including the Civil War. Watch any Civil War movie where there are reenactors and you will likely see them. And yea, they basically were for carrying food/rations and sometimes cutlery and such. Many soldiers used the clasp strap to hang their tin cups from.....

Thanks! We ordered the bags - but I can't remember where at the moment. They were very affordable and blank - my friend hand screen printed them for me. I will ask if he remembers.
