Basically the dogs caloric intake is the equivalent of 18.5185 big macs a day.If I took in that much I'd be so fat I couldn't move.

Another common practice during races is feeding the dogs a scoop or two of rendered pig fat per day on the trail. Their metabolisms can switch to fat burning mode 'on command' and the pure fat carries much more energy than just meat and kibble.

Those dogs weren't racing. I made a reddit about it my career in sled dog racing. www.reddit.com/r/dogs/comments/japt8w/discussion_so_i_work_in_sled_dog_racing/?context=3

They may be fed well, but dogs living on a chain having a box for shelter imo is beyond disgusting. It's not even allowed here to keep dogs that way.

These dogs love their lives. They are happy well-ajusted dogs that, unlike most pet dogs, get to live to their full potential. Take a trip to somewhere arctic and experince a commercial dog sled expedition. You will be amazed how good dogs they are. Another thing is that working dogs must want to work. Police or military dogs that have too much "puppy" in them as they get older, are normally allowed to be given/sold as pets. Sledding dogs are the same, so if a growing puppy shows little interest i being a working dog, they usually find a happy life as someone's family dog

I got my dog from a musher/breeder here in Quebec. At first I reacted pretty much like you did when I entered the kennel enclosure. But as the breeder told me, those dogs are super resilient anyways and they get more quality exercise and human interaction than many dogs in ''good'' cozy homes. He owns 32 dogs total including the females and puppies and they were all incredibly friendly, curious and docile. No exception. He keeps only the males in his race packs as they are more competitive than females, he sells females for adoption. He keeps 2 healthy females in his pack and breeds them only once a year. I obviously can't speak for all the mushers out there as it's very likely that there is abusive and careless ones, but those I know love their packs as their own family.

These dogs look FAR from miserable. They are bred for this and are beyond happy. Like everyone else has said, they are not your typical pet/house dog.

If you kept these dogs indoors they would be miserable. If you kept them indoors, then ran them in -30F or less they would freeze on the trail. These dogs are built for the cold, they adapt to the cold, they are comfortable in the cold. The chains are used because with 40-150 Huskies who all love to run, no other containment system is safe. They jump fences, dig holes, escape houses. This will lead to random breeding, lots of dog fights, and lots of lost or dead dogs. These dogs live to run, it is all they want in life. They are not companions, they are not house dogs. I have a sled dog as a "pet" and when we had a dog door you never saw her in the house, she chose to live outside. Now she has an insulated dog house with bedding and such, and you will find her sleeping on a pile of ice or on top of the house instead of in the house in 15 below or less. That's just how these dogs are.
