What you didn't mention about the spores, is that you can take the "hat" of the mushrooms and put in gills down on parchment paper to make what's called a "spore print". And when you wanna plant it, you scrape the spores of the paper into a solution that you disperse into a cake of nutrients, the ground or the stump/log of a tree.

It's an interesting reaction. I think humans have a natural fear of the ephemeral. What disappears and appears so suddenly doesn't give you that reassuring sense of familiarity. Mushrooms are mysterious and the unknown is scary. Furthermore, even scientifically mycology remains one of the least known and funded departments

This show is like the "How's it Made" of the food world. Or for the older ones, the little clip from picture picture in the Mr. Rogers show. I love these little clips and they are always informative, but I feel like they are too short, which I guess is a good thing, cuz it makes me go look into more information instead of droning on for so long. @@evlish8771 humans tend to have an irrational fear towards the foreign and the ephemeral. What could be there yesterday and suddenly died or disappeared 2 days later is enough to tweak the human brain into interpreting that object as something foreign/unusual. Thus, arousing fear. On the side note, mushrooms have an extremely unusual body, which further contributes to that fear response.

"Can you name one vegetable that can grow without sunlight? You can't!" Actually every plant on earth can grow without sunlight, they have reserve energy supplies in the form of sugar that allow for growth in... you guessed it, the dark. It's not much growth, but cell division is happening. What plants "can't" do without sunlight is replenish their energy reserves. So your statement should have been "can you name one vegetable that can produce energy without sunlight, you can't!"

There must be several ways to grow mushrooms... he was saying about spores... but this company I used to do work for is the largest manufacturer of mushroom spawn in the world... they actually grow mushrooms in an old limestone mine... thy literally had hundreds of miles of underground tunnels and each off leg of the mine was sealed off and had an enormous amount of mushrooms growing in them... they picked and processed them on site... they dont actually use that facility anymore for growing mushrooms commercially but they still do have some mushrooms growing there... was called Creekside Mushrooms in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Same. i want to know where the mushroom gets it's mass and what chemical processes it uses to create the components it is made out of. Apparently they eat sugars [but some grow on wood and soil, not oats], and are made out of chitin, but I have a feeling there is some oxidation going on to create so much mass so quickly. And also how much carbon it requires and how does it use other elements & minerals in the soil etc etc. I am having a very hard time finding a video explaining all of this. If you have luck please let me know. I will do the same. edit: apparently lignin (what wood is made of) is broken down into 'simple sugars' by fungi. lignin is made of 'organic polymers' or 'monolignol alcohols' [i am unfamiliar so this part is confusing to me]. How the fungi uses the sugars and whatever else to build it's structure...I have no idea. i will keep searching 😅

HEY! I FOUND A GOOD SERIES. Mushroom physiology. By channel: Biologic Podcast kzbin.info/aero/PL29lXgYAYbrvCBEeQFr7F1D66zT5f3eFZ I'm not sure which video you should start with. I would suggest starting at the beginning of this fungi playlist but if you get impatient, at least check out the 'nutrition' upload. ✌️

Fun fact, the fungus is really the plant while the muahroom is sort of the fruiting body of a growth. Like if apple trees grew below ground and only the apples grew above ground.

I'd love to see wood blewit mushrooms (_Clitocybe nuda_) grown commercially here. This is one of the best wild mushrooms I've tried. And I think a variety has already been cultivated somewhere in Europe.

Anybody that grows cubensis know why we have to be so careful about contams yet they can grow these in giant warehouses and dunk 100+ cakes into a huge vat of water without worrying about it? Genuinely curious what they do to be able to grow such huge quantities without contam issues.
