The Berlioz Damnation of Faust was such a perfect choice, I wished I had come come up with it first.

A further suggestion for your consideration: the oratorio "Historia di Jephte" by Giacomo Carissimi. This work is emblematic of his mature style. As is well known, it had a decisive influence on later baroque music, in particular the final chorus with its poignant dissonances, or the lament of Jephte's daughter.

What a splendid Cancrizans Canon!

What a delightful list so far. I might suggest the following additions: Pettersson (6), Atterburg (3), Sköld (2), Myaskovsky (24), Bax (1), Tubin (8), Lutoslawski (1), Yoshimatsu (Memo Flora), Lyatoshensky (2) and Popov (1). I am a bit of a fan of “tougher” symphonists.

Vaughan Williams and Honegger already have been included. Good choices anyway.

This is my favourite series from Dave. Happy to know it continues. I'd like to know where the "evil god, Cancrizans" story comes from. Is there a video about this?
@chutton988 Жыл бұрын
The story just springs fully formed from him in the first episode and is repeated especially when he picks a whole album and mentions negotiating with Cancrizans for that particular carve out in the rules. Music students are often taught about contrapuntal games and transformations in Bach’s The Musical Offering and The Art of Fugue and Ockeghem’s Missa prolationum and in those classes it’s always mentioned that canons can be composed with the musical lines being played backwards, those being called crab or cancrizans canons. I adore Dave’s name for classical music’s god and find it so apt and hilarious, all the more so since he dryly carries on and on with it with minimal explanation, as if it’s truly “a thing.”

@@chutton988 And the first such cancrizans canon in the history of occidental music is "Ma fin est mon commencement" ("My end is my beginning") by Guillaume de Machaut.

@@philippecassagne3192 ah yes, good to mention. And how about that cool little Haydn minuet Al Roverso in Symphony 47 in G / piano sonata in A hob. XVI: 26. Not a canon but I just want to mention it.

Hello Dave! I have seen the list and some comments and I just wanted to add my suggestions for including in this series Ernest Bloch (my thought is concerti grossi 1&2) Luigi Cherubini (Medea) Giovanni Gabrieli (Sacrae Symphoniae) Max Reger (Variations and Fugue on a theme by Mozart/Bach) Freitas Branco (Suites Alentejanas/Symphonies) and Piazzola (Suite Punta del Este) Thank you for reading and take care!

LOVE this series. I'm still eager for Erik Satie's appearance on the list. For his most characteristic piece, imo, it's a choice between two periods: "Trois morceaux en forme de poire" (Satie's early years) and "Sports et divertissements" (his witty, contrapuntal maturity). Can't wait to see what's chosen for Cancrizans, but one thing is certain - Satie would've had some choice words for the old bastard.

Speaking of Mother Goose, I listened to the combination of Mother Goose, and L’Eventail de Jeanne on Naxos this weekend and think it is excellent. And enjoyed a great deal of the L’Eventail de Jeanne. I assume you have heard it? What is your opinion?

Wow. This list has turned out great. Actually I was a little bit skeptical when you started this, but now I love it. By the way Dukas' Piano Sonata was a real find to me. I came across a used copy of the piece, played by Olivier Chauzu on Calliope, for just $7 shortly after you did it. It surely is something that human can proudly show to alien invaders, boasting of our cultural prowess. I'm going to try more on the list and start digging into Crumb soon. Thank you!! P.S. Aren't you willing to pick one for Wourinen, though he's one of those composers you can happily live without? Anything that has comparative advantage, if any.
@DavesClassicalGuide Жыл бұрын
No, I don't think I'll do Wourinen. I'm making progress with Cancrizans and don't want to mess it up.

Rhetorical question: Aren't there any women who have written decent "classical" music? You recently showcased a box set (album) of such works, so there apparently are a few. To be clear, I'm not - repeat, not - being critical. This has been a fascinating exercise to say the least. I'm simply pointing out the apparent paucity of women who have written "classical" music over the centuries.
@DavesClassicalGuide Жыл бұрын
Sure there are--just very few because women weren't permitted (or encouraged) to take on what was considered to be a man's job. Same thing with women writers, and much else.
