I really wanted to be negative this time, but the theatre kids of a cappella simply nailed this one again.
‪@Thevoiceplay‬ are simply unbeatable at this!
This version is so incredible that I don't even have words right now.
I believe my reaction speaks for itself and hopefully you'll also enjoy my occasional nerdy musical analysis.

The songwriter gave Voiceplay a ten out of ten raised alehorns for their version. I call that high praise.

This is definitely one of their most popular songs for a reason! And adding the rap was pure genius, it just elevated it in such a cool way. Can't wait for more VP! I'm still just gonna keep suggesting the medleys dude, Queen, Boy Bands, Disney, all of em are amazing

You know you are doing something right when the orginal composer, Miracle of Sound, posts a comment on your cover: "Well done, lads. Definitely one of the more creative covers I've heard! I rate it ten raised alehorns out of ten" You haven't really reacted to one of their more soulful covers yet. I recommend either Creep by Radiohead or I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raite.

This one had me ready to march off to war!! It gets me so pumped! It's top 5 VoicePlay for me. If you haven't watched "7 Nation Army" yet, I'd recommend that one for sure. It's a banger! Also, if you want a more Southern gospel feel with this group, check out "Daddy Sang Bass." It's an older one from when Earl was still with the group but it definitely has that feel to it. ❤

Unlocking new flavors.... perfect description for this one!! I was just looking through the entire catalogue of their work. There is nothing I don't like. Uh Oh, double negative. Oh well, nothing makes me go "meh". There are many that I don't go back and listen to over and over. Not because they aren't wonderful, but because they don't grab me. And, no, I won't give you an example. Find one yourself, and make it funky!

With VoicePlay, they are noted (pun intended) for using a dominate 7th chord with Mixolydian riffing under it over where it was supposed to be minor. It just gives it a lot of oomph and modal ambiguity for a measure or so.... that way, you really cannot tell exactly where it's going to resolve.
@mikkifullerton
@mikkifullerton 5 ай бұрын
Oooo I'd love to hear that, could you point out a couple examples?
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 5 ай бұрын
@@mikkifullerton, "Nothing Else Matters" is a good example. Instead of using an A minor chord, they use an A dominant. In "Hall of the Mountain King" Geoff does something similar, but with a twist. It's supposed to be a minor chord, but he does a Jazz run in Dorian toward the end of the song. These are techniques normally only Jazz musicians are familiar with... Geoff and Layne are VERY knowledgeable on using modes and chord substitutions.

OK, I don’t think you’ll dislike this one, but how about trying “in The Hall of the Mountain King?” It’s VERY VERY different from this. Have fun!! Great reaction-and I’m sure someone’s already mentioned it but Gavin Dunne (@miracleofsound) gave this ten out of ten alehorns, even tho this is entirely different from his original conception. Oh, and if you want to encounter truly rabid, he’s the greatest singer ever to open his mouth, kind of fans, check out Dimash. Put on your asbestos underwear, though, if you intend to say anything that even sounds critical. The “dears” (his fans) will wash your mouth out. LOL.

Ah, my very favorite! Voiceplay played a little trick on their fans with this video. See, during Covid, a lot of artists, especially Home Free, were doing videos where they appeared to be together, but weren't, they were all in different places and filmed and edited seamlessly together. Voiceplay did that in their cover of "Enemy," where they were performing "with" a lovely, talented young lady named Alexa. She was actually in Japan, and they green screened her in to make it look like they were together. And this came out not terribly long after J. None. left for the Naval Choir. At the beginning of this, J. None is on his own, so everybody assumed he was filming his part separately, and edited in. But THEN, he approached the door and with a squeaky door sound effect (done by Layne), and walks in and joins the group! The comments were pretty funny, many people saying "I thought J. None was elsewhere!" It was a real "Gotcha!" moment.

Here's one of their older ones you may not like as well. Try their cover of Once Upon a Dream. It's pretty short, but does need to be listened to straight through. Breaking it up spoils what integrity it has, so if you want to try it, do give it that grace.

Geoff has 3 B0s, the first really extended 14 sec. while J was singing the intro. Miracle of Sound thought VoicePlay's version was the best cover anyone has done. Love Layne's creaking door. We're Good was the song Geoff and Ron Dietz collaborated to introduce Cesar. Hoist the Colours (Pirates of the Caribbean), I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt), Queen in 5 Minutes, Live from the Sing-off Tour: VoicePlay doing their Road Trip (do get the one that is 9 Mil plus.
