This is my favorite theme in the entire game. It fits the scenerio it plays in so well. It's honestly impossible for me to sum up why it's such an excellent sequence and why it left such an impact on me in just a KZbin comment. But God damn it's just a masterpiece

The game takes a turn at this point. Combined with the music, it just makes the impact that much harder. So good.

It's because it's at this moment that the game turns your perspective completely on its head. Before this moment, you'd essentially been playing a typical 'bad end' video game route. You're playing the same game as usual, but up until now, there's been few moments that make you feel the consequences of that. Toriel and Papyrus are 2 of the only exceptions, but the former plays out almost normally except after you attack and the latter is a rather brief moment of hesitation, and then the game continues on as normal. It's a lot like a game like GTA, where it doesn't matter very much if you're a paragon of goodness or a murderous psychopath. The consequences only last for the duration of however long you're in trouble, and then the game goes back to normal. Then you get to this fight. The lead-in alone is just as jarring as Papyrus if not moreso, with you ready to kill an unarmed, defenseless child who's been your pal up until that point, for no reason at all. Then, when you make the choice to attack him, even if you try and ignore the implications of what you're doing, the game FORCES you to face them by having Undyne intercept the attack. But she doesn't just shame you, though - she has her moment of epiphany then and there. In the normal game, you make her realize the error of her ways by showing her kindness. Here, you get her to reverse her entire life philosophy in moments because you hit her so hard, with such apathy and hatred, that she instantly realizes you're an existential threat to the entire world. And it's the music, in both name and in tone, that cements that. The game is telling you in no uncertain terms that you're no longer the hero, or even really the protagonist. SHE is the hero. SHE has become what you were SUPPOSED TO BE. You, the character, are the villain of this story, and are a worse one than even Flowey would become. You, the player, aren't experiencing a game anymore. Most of the puzzles are deactivated, and most of the character interactions are now lost to you. You're little more than an observer, moving Frisk around an increasingly empty map and occasionally hitting 'Fight' until you get to Sans. Papyrus may mark the moment that you become indefensible, but this song marks the moment that you become irredeemable. Papyrus is the choice; Undyne is the consequences of that choice.

This track itself is pretty simple but it has many meta laters to it such as the latter half when Toby pulls out the Zunpets right when the fight turns into a real bullet hell as it pays homage to the Touhou games and music, it's like one of those gotcha moments that takes you off guard when you play and you can't help but take a moment to laugh if you're in on the joke.

Yeah, most of the undertale songs are short (even though there are some really good stuff that extends up to 6 minutes) because they play when you have to fight and they are sometimes made to be on loop if the fight itself extends too much for the player. In 1995, Japanese Zunya Ota started coding these "bullet-hell" games from scratch, including all art assets and composing the entire sound tracks with no musical training. Often super janky and quirky with uneven times, tempos, and dissonance everywhere, it's still often incredibly charming and catchy, and undeniably unique. He became an underground hit in Japan and, shockingly, "Touhou" gained a cult following worldwide, with the 19th title in the series being released this year. One nerd, extreme passion, endless determination... Zunya Ota is like the Mowgli of music, coming out of the jungle to make music, to everyone's amazement. He's kind of a hero to nerds.

@@DrumRollTonyReacts Yeah Touhou music is really unique, most notably for the composer ZUN's use of a trumpet instrument fans call the "ZUNpet". The reason I compared Touhou to Battle Against a True Hero is because this song utilizes a lot of ZUNpets and the developer of Undertale, Toby Fox, is also a massive Touhou fan, having played a piano cover of a Touhou theme at his local church when he was younger and having met ZUN in person. One thing I love about this track is how it fairs against its parallel track and how it compares to the feel of each. The normal version (spears of justice) feels more triumphant, bombastic and cheesy. It feels like youre playfighting and it feels more like shes just toying with you. Compared to this song and it feels more heroic, standoffish and intimidating. It has this energy of "Im going to be your greatest challenge yet, and you will die by my hand, because I am the hero to a villian like you." It feels like the last stand of a great warrior who is giving it everything they have to stop you.

You should definitely check out Waterfall, Asgore's theme (which is a 20 second long song called Bergentrückung and then a full song called ASGORE, they complement each other) and Hopes And Dreams, which are some of the most "powerful" and complex songs in the game. Eventually if you've gotten enough of Undertale and want to find more songs from Toby Fox he's working on a game called Deltarune, which already has a big OST, also worth checking out

Niice! As many people have said, the entire Undertale OST (and Deltarune OST, for that matter, the 'sequel' game) is a banger from start to finish. Toby Fox is a DAMN good composer- he went from making this small indie game to actually writing what's become something of the main themes of the new Pokemon game- which is also used in the anime. So he's definitely gotten more work strictly as a composer. I can imagine you wouldn't, but I'd be VERY curious to see you react to Man On The Internet's Undertale: The Musical. It's a fan project, and the full compiled video is long, but it also has individual tracks in a playlist. (A couple of songs needed to be removed as individual songs, but they ARE in the full video). If you ever did, I suggest playing the game first, because it's inherently got spoilers in it. But I have a vested interest in seeing that, because I'm in it, as one of the leads- a goat named Toriel. c: We put a lot into that production and I'm always curious to see what people think on a first watch.

toby is a killer musician and that's from someone who has a dad who was in a band, i love his games but it's also kind of a shame he isn't just making music. but i understand why from what i hear he only makes good music when its something he's truly passionate about, so ill take what little music from him i can get, because that stuff is so good.

also keep in mind some song like heart ache and asgore have refences to each other or go with each other, like "begentrucking and asgore". which is why some are so short. for example this song is meant to be pared with "but the earth refused to die" on top of 'battle against a true hero". since one is a lead up to the actual fight song.

His biggest reason for not doing it is actually chronic wrist problems, he's had multiple surgeries on them already. He came out during an undertale orchestral performance in japan and was in pain halfway through performing one song. It's the main reason he has a team on his game now, at one point he had to go a few months barely able to touch a keyboard. He sometimes had someone help with the music by playing to his command when he's recovering from surgery and such (I seem to remember him saying it was his niece, but that's the one part I'm struggling to double-check.)

Any time I see an anime or game react pop up, I'm tempted to suggest looking into Umineko. A Visual Novel that uses its soundtrack and sound effects so well that it's been referred to as a Sound Novel. But it's such a hard suggestion to make, because the soundtrack is so stacked. Also because so many of the songs are not short. Dreamenddischarger is often at the top of the Best Of lists, but is like 9 minutes long. Worldenddominator's another, but is 6 minutes or something. Maybe, Dir, System 0, or The End of the World?

You can always revisit the comments if/when you play the game to avoid any potential spoilers though. If you listen to any other Undertale songs, be sure to not watch any videos that have gameplay attached. I did that years ago when I had not played the game yet, although I didn't pay too much attention nor did I remember much of the gameplay. Hope you get to play soon! The music really makes a good story 10x better.

David Wise the composer is seen as a genius and is very experimental. Fortnite for example was also unknown and is today one of the well known games ever. You should really take a look at Undertale's main theme of the same name, it's 6 minutes long so quiet a difference between the bosses themes Not undertale related but I think you should take a good look at Will Wood!
