the lecture is awesome but I dont know why is the need for hindus / indians to show our art is something secular, while it is not nifact, tcarnatic music is essentially invokes the bhava within the listener so that music serves as a path to the divinity. its simple ! We dont need to secularise our music !

I think what she's trying to say is that Carnatic music as a system has been developed primarily for it's own sake. I have no disagreement eith the fact that the transcendent bhaava evoked makes it perfect to express Bhakti. However, the beauty of the music exists independent of lyrics or bhakti (for example in Kalpana Swaram and Aalapanai). This fundamental beauty in the music can awaken bhakti in the listener. This is what was likely meant when Carnatic music is classified as Art music instead of religious music.

How does an Alapana or or kaplana swara invoke religious bhava - and if manodharma is a main part of music - why is that artistic manifestation not free of evoking that bhava and hence not religious?
