Albert Gleizes was a French artist, theoretician, philosopher, a self-proclaimed founder of Cubism and an influence on the School of Paris. Along with Jean Metzinger, he wrote the first major treatise on Cubism, "Du Cubisme". Gleizes also spent four years in New York, bring awareness of modern art to America. During World War II, Gleizes remained in France under the German occupation. Materials being difficult to obtain during the war, Gleizes painted on burlap, using a mixture of glue and paint.
