One of Jackie Gleason's most beautiful tape albums! Listening to this makes me daydream of a relaxing summer evening spent indoors in 1959 or 1960. It's just so relaxing, like really nothing out of the ordinary was happening when this was recorded. Enjoy!

Due to many moves over my lifetime (and lack of space), I gave away all my 78’s from the 1950’s (and LP’s) but this was one I couldn’t part with and still have - 60+ years after first buying it! Gleason was a sensitive, many-layered man; a true romantic, in my opinion. And who could forget the superb horn in these pieces! Thank you so much for this beautiful music.

Beautiful, magnificent music. Thank you so much for making this available. In the 1950s-60s, our local radio station in small-town Iowa had a dinner music program that featured music like this until sunset, when the station signed off for the day. Hearing this reminds me of those early evenings of my childhood, my folks having this on the radio in the kitchen. I miss those times.

Most definitely! Reel To Reel Tapes were the CD’s of their day! Prerecorded Reel Tapes used to cost as much as CD’s back then, maybe a bit more. Unfortunately, Reel To Reel Tapes were also more expensive than LP Records, so they weren’t as popular as they could have been.

Jackie's records are good. The most sexy instrument is the saxophone though. I wish that Jackie used more of the saxophone, these songs would have been even better. My soul grieves that so many people play the electric guitar and ruin songs that they play in. It is a shame that horns are dying.

Here, You have the history of this álbum: Probably the most popular, iconic mood music album ever made, Jackie Gleason’s Music for Lovers Only set the stage for untold imitators to come with its evocative album artwork and lush, sweeping soundscapes. Released as a 10” LP in 1952, it set the record-which still stands!-for most weeks in the Top Ten Album charts at 153, and hit the charts yet again in 1955 when it was released as a 12” LP. But here is where the history of Music for Lovers Only becomes, like most romances, complicated. The original 10” included only eight tracks, but Capitol’s first 12” issue of the album added eight more for a total of 16; subsequently, however, the album was reissued on LP with 12 tracks (because 16 tracks had very por sound), and the out-of-print sole CD release of Music for Lovers Only featured just the eight tracks from the original 10” release (Collector’s Choice). Now, for the first time ever on CD, “Real Gone Music” is restoring this classic album to its full, 16-track length, with its glorious, original artwork intact-another first!-and in its original mono. As for those wondering what musical contribution Mr. Gleason made to the album, some say Gleason conceived of melodies in his head and described them vocally to his assistants. But when Bobby Hackett, whose wistful trumpet lines were the focal point of the Gleason sound and of this album, was asked what Jackie contributed to the recordings, he replied: “He brought the checks.” Either way, Music for Lovers Only stands as The Great One’s greatest musical achievement. Now, tracks are. 1. Alone Together, 2.My Funny Valentine, 3.But Not for Me, 4.Love (Your Spell Is Everywhere), 5.I’m in the Mood for Love, 6.Love Is Here to Stay, 7. I Only Have Eyes for You, 8.Body and Soul, 9.Little Girl, 10. I Cover the Waterfront, 11. Some Day, 12 If I Had You, 13. When a Woman Loves a Man, 14.A Stranger in Town, 15. A Moonlight Saving Time, 16. My Love for Carmen. Regards from Buenos Aires.

How I love this album. I discovered Jackie Gleason a few months ago because Alone Together is one of the songs Beegie Adair was practicing in her home (on her channel), getting ready to go back out on the road with her trio. (She never made it.) I found Alone Together such a melodramatic and haunting tune that drew me in, I looked on Spotify for other renditions.

"Truth in Advertising" (grin): This album is a 1959/1960 true stereo re-recording of the original early/mid fifties classic. Capitol did that to capitalize (pardon the pun) on the stereo LP's success. June Christie's "Something Cool" was also re-recorded in the same manner. Amazing how durable the music is...just like "Ralphie Boy"!

Saludos.

@@TheEsther1961, Hey Esther! Thank you for listening to WJST! 😀👍 According to Shazam, the tune is called Round Rock Riff from Jackie Gleason. It says its from the Masterjazz Jackie Gleason album. I don't know if I have that song on Reel Tape, but I can try to find out. 🙂

Hi Chris, thanks enormously for this upload. This is the first time I've seen/heard a 7 1/2 IPS pre-recorded open reel! If you'd be kind enough, I'd love to know what you're using to transcribe and if/how you're attempting to match post-emphasis. Are you using any NR (dbx) post-conditioning or processing? I've been something of a tape-nut for some 40 years and still involved with analogue archival - google "Bird of Prey tonearm" to see what I'm up to now. Bird of Prey is designed to transcribe 1/2 speed masters (or even lower given the media). Subscribed!

Hey James! Thank you for the kind words and subscribing! 😃👍 My simple answers might surprise you, there’s no hyper expensive industry standard equipment I’m using; couldn’t afford it anyway. Instead, I’m using what I can afford and improving what I have to the maximum. It’s starts with the Teac X-1000R Reel Tape Deck that I carefully restored over a period of a year. I replaced every electrolytic capacitor in that machine with high quality Gold Standard Nichicon brand capacitors; designed to bring out the low and high end of audio. A website I found sold a “recap”kit for this Teac machine for about $100+ at the time. I bought a couple of these to make sure I had enough for a few machines. The stereo amplifier board has a few adjustments for bass and treble control. I turned these up all the way to help very old Reel Tapes sound their best. I did turn up the output levels a little bit, to retrieve hard to hear recordings. I then replaced the tape heads with high quality Amorphous heads found on the Teac 2000 and similar machines. These high quality heads seem to match up perfectly with the thorough recap I did. This is the deep secret to bringing out the very best out of 50-70+ year old Reel Tapes. When these prerecorded Reel Tapes are produced at 7.5IPS, the sound is even more improved; at this point as close to the Master Tape as you can get. From there, I bought a high quality Creative Sound Blaster card; I don’t remember the model number. But it’s still for sale online I believe. I try to buy the best sound cards they have for the best audio quality, however still not that expensive. I don’t use highly expensive audio cable to connect from the Teac X-1000R to the sound card input, just regular does the job. I don’t have the money for expensive recording software. So I went with Magix brand Audio Forge software. Or Sound Forge? Initially designed to bring out the best of LP Records, it works perfectly for Reel Tapes as well. I don’t use any sort of filters or other complicated settings. I want to capture as much of the raw analog sound from the Teac X-1000R as possible, at the best levels. The program is not a professional recording software, it’s designed for people who want to preserve LP Records. However, the program includes a very nice suite of editing and multitrack tools I can use for many projects. When I have finished recording to the PC, I then save and produce the resulting audio file as 44.1Khz? WAV File. I can also produce the file as a very high quality MP3 that sounds almost like WAV. So what you are hearing is the result of affordable alternatives, similar to what a high dollar recording studio can bring. When I first bought the Teac X-1000R, for $1,000+ the guy said it was in excellent shape. Find out later the machine was locked up, with a hard to find circuit board fractured in two places. Luckily I had enough spare boards from another parts machine to get it working again. I eventually got everything moving again mechanically, and it now sounds better than when it left the factory in Japan. The Reel Tapes sounded so good, I used them exclusively as my music library for my Internet Radio Station WJST Jet Set Radio. I played all of these old Reel Tapes over the air for 4.5 years on Live365. Unfortunately I ran out of money to keep the station going in August 2023. If someone could send me $300 or more a month, I could have my station airing these beautiful sounding Reel Tapes again. www.wjstjetset.com I hope this helps, and keep them playing!
