【Music】HOW TO KILL A MONSTER

Often times the path to becoming the best version of yourself involves the lowest points imaginable. It’s even feasible that it takes a villain arc of your own to be able to have the perspective necessary to being a good person otherwise. I think Starlight is one of the best examples of this across all of the characters. And because of her perspective in being that villain, she’s able to empathize and help along others on a similar path to herself.
HOW TO KILL A MONSTER is a testament to absolution. Things and people get worse before they get better, but what’s required is the resolve to be better in the first place.
From a writing standpoint, the song is also probably the weirdest one on CUTIEMARKS, if not one of my weirder ones in general. Again, my goal was to take my progressive rock roots and nestle it between high octane experiments in sound design and arrangement. Transparently, I’m not entirely proud of the mix/master on this one, but perhaps it lends itself to that imperfection as an homage to the low fidelity nature of music from the era. We can just pretend, right?

you dont know how important this message is to some people now a days who are so lost in the world and think because of actions they've done, or how they've treated certain people, they could never redeemed themselves, never be better, never do better. TOO MANY people think this way cause of the internet perpetuating this narrative that bad deeds make a bad life/person and that's the end of it, making themselves feel the most alone a person could feel, when its the lessons you DONT take from these low points that make you a "bad person". I love the messages you are sharing in this album

I’m still struggling with this myself; I’m not in a good place right now, and I think the main reason why is that I don’t accept myself-both the good and bad. Ever since I was around 10-12 years old, I began developing this intense fear of being judged. I grew emotionally distant from my family. I don’t like dealing with conflict, so I change myself significantly (and hide parts of myself) to fit in around others, even those closest to me. I find it hard to truly let go of all the fear: Fear of expressing my feelings and opinions on things I love; fear of revealing my shameful secrets; fear of admitting when I need help. I’m so anxious about how others view me because I don’t have a great view of myself. I don’t really know where I’m going with this post, but this album is honestly really amazing and reassuring, and my new favorite Vylet Pony album right now. I hope to someday find peace within myself and let go of all the shame and fear I harbor.

This song speaks to me a lot more than I would want it to. For a long time I've been pretending to be someone I'm not, clinging onto a false truth, and not loving anything in life. This led to a massive falling out with a loved one, and I said some nasty, awful stuff at her with pure wrath behind my words. However, she retaliated just as strongly as I did because she met my hate with equivalent love, and the lie I'd been living was shattered in a million pieces. Once it happened, I felt so defeated, but I was able to pick myself back up and make some real changes in my life, amend friendships, and cut unnecessary stresses in my life. Truly, once you give up the lie and say what you feel deep down, the monster can be seen AND killed.

I relate to this song deeply after finally giving this a listen to a couple of times to finally click with me and realizing. I was a terrible person in my past, very toxic and manipulative. I relate to starlight because she regrets hurting people, regrets her actions, like I have with mine, I have made some pretty shitty actions toward some people that I wish I could take back but I know I can't, and the only thing I can do is keep moving forward in life, and like starlight mentions in this song "I was at my worst before we met, I still have a long way to go". Which is a quote I stand by today. I'm going to fuck up sometimes and I realize that but the best thing I can do is own up to those mistakes and be better.

I honestly think this song is good, and yet again, similar to I Was Afraid, I HEAVILY relate to the message and meaning behind this song. I used to be probably the worst person I knew, and I don't say that just to self deprecate, as I'm in a much better place now. I would hurt others relentlessly, physically and mentally tear them down, all because I wanted someone to see me, notice me and the pain I was in dealing with in a dangerously abusive household. My actions were and are inexcusable, yet everything changed when I lost connections with a loved one because of my behavior. I'll never forget what they told me, as it was the one statement I needed to hear to open my heart and make me realize how important it is to have empathy and show compassion to others - to care for others, instead of being forcefully and purposefully apathetic and violent.
