I think (but don't quote me) that the proper way to write musical notation with a music nib is to hold the nib sideways to the paper, so that your downstrokes are thin (just as when you hold the nib the usual way, the side strokes are thin); and your side strokes are thick (as your downstrokes would be when holding the nib in the usual way). For those who write with normal nib orientation, the music nib should provide rather stylish letters. In my case, the Platinum music pen is the only pen (of many) that makes my handwriting look almost attractive. You might try the ink that I usually use in the music pen: Bad Belted Kingfisher. The music nib spreads this ink out a bit and makes it slightly lighter than it is with normal nibs, which I find most appealing.

You're right. I realized it after filming the video. Goes to show that I don't use these pens for music! You're right: they do make the ink look good. I've never tried Bad Belted Kingfisher. I have not liked some of the other Noodler's inks in the Platinum.

I love my Sailor music nib, because it's actually useable rather than being a fountain pen Sharpie!

I had a Platinum 3776 music but it was the older model of the 3776 and not the latest Century 3776 version. it was, but the stokes were rather broad, and not a hugh difference between the down/across strokes. it now has a new home. I still have a chartes blue Platinum 3776 in B nib that I like a lot.

I like this current version. If there's no difference in strokes, I wouldn't see the advantage of a music nib.

My favorite music nib is the Platinum 3776. I also have Sailor, Pilot, Taccia (made by Sailor, but steel), and Franklin-Christoph.

I've heard good things about both the Pilot and Franklin-Christoph, but have never tried one!

A very interesting show, Jason. I've never wanted a music nib, but have a 3776 with an Ultra Extra Fine nib, which is in daily use for writing in my daily diary that has rather poor paper. It's perfect for that job and even though it's plain black I really like the pen's design and looks. Cheers as always from the Wombats.

The 3776 is a great pen design! I find them comfortable and reliable. I have not tried an Ultra Extra Fine. The regular fine was a step too far for me! It's snowing here...

you´re good when your tired:) it was a fun episode with a lot of "suck" in it. I like music nibs. And I wanted to try all by the three big japanese brands. In my opinion the Platinum is the smoothest and most forgiving and then the Sailor.(i have two and booth work with most inks i thrown at them). The pilot is the least forgiving a little more squared with sharper corners but with a crisp line.

Dear Mr Waski...This video was so much fun! I also have a Sailor with a music nib and yes its ink sensitive too so I guess we have twins! Have you tried a dark blue pilot ink or waterman ink in the Sailor? I find they often yield good results in finnicky nibs. Thank you for this rodeo...I am loving my Platinum which I was going to sell but then I inked it to do a writing sample for the sale and now I love writing with it...its all in the ink - well not all but you know what I mean. Like I said before, I own the same platinum 3776, my only pen with a Musik nib and I love it. It’s almost always inked, but unlike yours so far it has performed great with all the inks I put in. 🖋💕

I don't own any pens with a music nib. My thoughts on the video were that I enjoyed the 1911 when it was writing. I loved that bit of flex the Sailor nib has but the skipping would drive me mad. I wonder if the feed can't keep up and is giving you some ink starvation in the 1911. In conclusion, I agree with you about the 3776 being the better pen. Mainly because of its' consistent performance.

The 1911 can lay down a beautiful line. But it needs to always lay down that line! I'm not sure if it's how the nib is or if there is something wrong.

Christoph nib 1.9 is a music nib that I love. Smooth but not bouncy.

You might want to think about having your Sailor tuned. It's unusual for a Sailor to be off, but it does happen.

The Sailor music nib is great in its own right. The nib on Waski’s pen is definitely an exception to the rule, when it comes to Sailor’s gold nibs, in general.

Music nibs are such a sweet pleasure to use. I have five of them : Platinum 3776, Sailor, Taccia (steel), Franklin-Christoph and Delta. All of them are differently (and similarly) great writers. If pressed to choose or own only one, I’d pick Platinum’s Music nib. Quite flawless and the best of the lot.

Yes the Platinum 3776 music nib is something unique to write with. The Platinum calligraphy is more like a double broad . It’s worth a try. Does the Niponset nib differ from the triple broad flex nib or are they the same?

The Neponset nib is the triple broad flex nib. I'm told that it has been refined since I purchased it, but it is the same nib.

Thanks for the review. Very good! Not really a fan of gray inks. And I’m wondering if it’s just way too wet for that nib. And doing any music copy the gray, especially with that much shading, would be not acceptable, but I like the very thin and thicker lines. Music copying is a strange beast. Very thin, vertical lines, and even sometimes the horizontal. Maximum contrast between thick and thin would be very good. I tend to like that in handwriting, too. I might be interested in buying that sailor. How much are you asking?

Honestly, I haven't found an ink I like in the Sailor, but you do make an excellent point about the shading ink. Since I don't write music (as shown by demonstrating it with the pen rotated 90 degrees), I enjoy the shading. Contact me in my channel E-mail if you are interested in buying. [e-mail]

I haven't had good luck, even with Sailor inks. You make a good point about the grey with a music nib. I would think plain black ink would be best in a music nib when used for music. @@WaskiSquirrel Thanks. I love shading in fountain pen handwriting, but was just thinking of it in writing music I wouldn’t ever write music. I used to be a professional musician, but writing is not part of what I would do. Making just casual copies. I would always use a pencil because… Mistakes happen. I don’t think I have any sailor inks, but maybe I should go look through my two drawers, and see if that’s true. Thanks again for reviews.

Shahr-truh is the best pronunciation I can find, and the one that makes the most sense for a non French speaker. Yeah, that gray ink isn't doing you any favors. I've never written with a music nib.
