It's not magic. But you are not able to understand the reason you don't find well with the Pelikan! Reasons are a lot: it's heavy, the nibs makes,rumor, the weight pushs the pen down.....😂 not few! I would like to see a comparison between Namiki Yukari 20 vs Pilot custom 845! These pen are very good!!🎉
@WaskiSquirrelСағат бұрын
My budget won't allow me to do the comparison you suggested, though both are pens I'd like to try! It could be the heaviness. I wasn't real sure why, just that I got a better feeling from the Pilot. I've actually since sold the m800, but the Pilot is still in my collection.

Found one in an almost black hue of blue, a diamond pattern and a number 7 in the back of the feed in a flea market for 2 USD in a deal with two egg-shaped tea infusors. Regrettably the section near the grip has several cracks, so I will not ink it and will keep it as a curiosity.

Great video! Feel free to flex the nib more, its quite flexible, especially on the down strokes. These Reform nibs including the one on this pen, were also made by Bock. Reform didn't made its onw nibs in this period. In fact many of the pen manufacturers in Germany in this period used nibs from Bock. Bock offered white label nibs, i.e. it could stamp whatever brand they made them for, but they also sold the same nibs under their own brand, Bock. Slightly cheaper since they both marketed their brand and also simplified the manufacturing process to one Logo stamping. These Reform marked nibs are virtually identical to Bock marked nibs (the one with the Goat logo), from this era. Also those Bock nibs are often found on Reform pens and they were originally sold as such. As to why some Reform pens have Reform stamped nibs and some have Bock stamped nibs, we don't know really, but we suspect if they run out of Reform stamped nibs, or they could not make them in time, Reform would simply order Bock stamped nibs which were never in short supply.
@WaskiSquirrelСағат бұрын
I will flex it! I'm always scared of pushing a pen too far. Good to know that Bock made the Reform nibs. I've had less luck with some of them, but it could be specific to the pen rather than the nib. These vintage Bock nibs were great, and I like your hypothesis about them running out of branded nibs!

In the 80s, I bought the Underwood No.5 as my second typewriter after my Imperial desk model. The No.5 was so awesomely gothic, that I bought a slightly sad No.6 as a *ahem 'project' which I never got round to. With my Underwood portable, these were far and away my favourites. I found recently that my dad had kept at least one of the Underwoods I'd had to leave in his garage when I went to University in 1992! 😮 I must dig it out, but I am worried what thirty years in a (dry) cellar may have done to it 😱

I turn to experts usually if I have a "mystery pen" and need to know more about it. Books about fountain pens are very good at the history of mainstream manufacturers. Less so with minor brands. Google, blog sites, manufacturers own websites can also be a good resource. KZbin videos can be useful for some history and aspects of basic pen maintenance. Don't forget Pen Shows are littered with experts who can fix your pen, grind a nib or just to have a chat. Pen clubs would be good if there were more of them. I know of none in my area. As you suggested some experts specialise. They many know nothing about modern pens but everything there is to know about the history of the Parker 51.

I'd like to say first, as one of those whose comments may have prompted the discussion on experts, that I do not claim to be an expert, and offered my opinion rather less than definitively, especially in light of the well-earned reputation of the seller. I think the problem of expertise is a real one for our community, with a number of those who carried the flame during the time when fountain pens were an extremely niche interest - Richard Binder, Arthur Twydle, Andreas Lambrou etc are aging and (in some cases) lost to us already. Fortunately, several of them have passed on their knowledge in books or venerable websites. Some of us are lucky enough to live within reach of like-minded collectors and a Pen Club (not an option in North, or even South, Dakota, I expect). But I use two main sources of information: 1. Books. I have about half a dozen books in paper form, but they do tend to concentrate on expensive collectors' items, rather than the more functional pens we are more likely to come across or afford. And I have a handful of books on the Kindle, including a couple of Richard Binder's, even though I do prefer to leaf through physical volumes. 2. The Internet. This opens a huge area of expertise in many forms, and of varying value. To be honest, fountain pens is the sixth of my interests for which the internet has provided me with information, and even sales outlets. They are (in order) Buddhism, Classic Minis, cycling, vintage (perticularly Olympus) film cameras, RC aircraft, and now pens. I started using forums to share with like-minded enthusiasts, and later found websites made by those keen and (mostly) knowledgeable enough. A lot of these are still in existence, but are getting old. Two I use fairly regularly that look old-fashioned, and possibly haven't been updated in years are a comprehensive list of Parker models, and a similar one for Conway-Stewart. Several others have disappeared, and with them a wealth of knowledge. Some information on classic brands can be derived from specialist sellers online, but their descriptions can be very brief, and, again, there is an understandable lean towards higher end items. I'm a member of a bunch of Facebook groups, but a lot of the information shared on there is quite ephemeral, and/or difficult to search for. But they do provide a self-selecting community for the relevant niches - Kaweco, PenBBS, Vintage, UK- based etc. Wikipedia has some information, but all too brief, and not always accurate. I have, however, found KZbin transformative. It forms a searchable database of information, opinion, and demonstration of pens old and new - how to choose, use and repair - etc etc. The first time I was faced with a pen repair, it was my late grandfather's beautiful green Sheaffer Balance, and I made a mess of it. This was the 80s, and I had no idea where to turn to for advice. But now, I am confident in diagnosing most pen ailments, and providing some of the cures, thanks largely to YT. The facility of being able to show, rather than just describe, does render this an excellent medium. On top of this quirky encyclopaedia, it provides (albeit distant) relationships where there may be interaction with the content creators, and certainly with other commenters, which I had not expected. Over time, we come to recognise the regular visitors to a channel, and respect (or otherwise) their opinions. We do need to cherish and preserve our archives of information as best we can as a community. After all, there is no definitive expert on this subject, since so much of the experience, ultimately, is personal and subjective. Between us, with all we have learned about our individual corners of interest, WE are the experts, and WE are the custodians. The most important thing we could do is foster interest in others, and pass on what we know, and how we know it.

When I got interested in restoring vintage Esterbrook J pens, I watched every KZbin video I could find of people replacing ink sacs and cleaning up J pens. I consider Alan Light from the KZbin channel What I Ink an expert on that subject because he has the most comprehensive series of videos covering J pen identification and restoration. Since you you apparently haven't found a one stop location for all the available information about Reform pens, perhaps you will become the resident KZbin expert on that subject as you compile information and gain experience with the various models.
